A major difference between the film and play versions of The Crucible is the setting of the first encounter between John Proctor and Abigail Williams. In the play, John had been in the room with Betty, Abigail, and others because he was curious what was going on. Everyone else then gradually left, which suggested their meeting was more happenstance. In the film, however, John was outside getting ready to leave when Abigail snuck out to tempt him. I’m sure you’ve debated with yourself many times the book or the movie. This essay proves to you why the movie version is so much better. John Proctor was without a single doubt the best character in The Crucible. The film did an impeccable job of conveying a much better picture of what truly happened in the years 1692 and 1693. Even though many people may consider the book to be the better version of The Crucible their reasons do not compare to the reasons I have written to prove that the movie is the best version. The movie did a much better version of giving us more details and more personality out of the characters such as John Proctor. In the book, John Proctor was a dry and dull character but in the movie, he is incredibly influential.
The Crucible the film is an adapted version of Arthur Miller’s play of the same name, which was inspired by the 1692 Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts. The two main characters are Abigail Williams played by Winona Ryder and John Procter played by Daniel Day-Lewis. The Crucible’s opening scene is Reverend Parris catching Abigail and her friends dancing in the woods and conjuring spirits. Abigail did not want to get in trouble so she blamed Tituba, a Barbados slave, for making her drink chicken blood, and tempting her to sin.

John Proctor is an honest, though harsh, man who is clearly the protagonist of The Crucible. Before the beginning of the play, John had an affair with Abigail Williams, a girl who worked in his household, which was abruptly ended when Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife, fired her. This event causes Abigail to desire revenge against Elizabeth while she still pines for John. Once the trials are well underway, Abigail accuses Elizabeth of being a witch, which leads to her arrest. John goes to the court in defense of his wife, where he reveals that he did indeed committed adultery with Abigail in an attempt to expose her as a fraud and a liar. Unfortunately, John's appeal falls on deaf ears and he is arrested as well. While his wife manages to get a temporary stay of execution, due to the fact that she is pregnant at the time of the trials, which in the end saves her by insuring her life until the chaos, hysteria, and persecution comes to an end, John is sentenced to death. The play ends with his hanging, but his death puts an end to the trials.

The Crucible had many differences between the original play and the movie. In the play we never saw Tituba and the girls dancing in the woods. But in the movie it was the opening scene, it was probably put in there to show that later in the movie we are going to look back at that scene. Another difference was that Tituba was not whipped until confession in the play. But in play she was held down and whipped until she confessed. And before some scenes in the movie where they would be in court it would start raining if they went outside. So the rain could mean something bad is going to happen later on in the movie. The play never said anything about rain in the play while they were at the courthouse. But since the movie was outdoors it is easier to make it look like it was raining. In the movie Abigail accused Reverend Hale’s wife of being a witch, which in the play there was nothing ever said about Hale’s wife. The movie is showing that Abigail will do anything to get the blame off of her for being a witch. She will try to blame somebody else so they look bad and not Abigail.
Arthur Miller's’ The Crucible has been adapted into a film, and there are some major differences between the play and the movie. For example, in the play, Miller choose to skip over any explanations or descriptions of the court for supporting characters like Goody Osbourn. He decided to omit these completely, and the court outcomes were only mentioned briefly in later scenes. In the film, we saw glimpses of the court for most supporting characters, including both Goody Osburn and George Jacobs. This allows the audience to see the reactions of the people, and how simple it was to blame and convict people.
Author Arthur Miller, of The Crucible an excellent job of showing the cruelty of the witch trials. The movie based upon The Crucible, is almost an exact replica of the book. When showing many similarities, it also had some vast differences. These differences don't have much of an effect on the actually story. They are added for dramatic effect and to entice the viewer. Although there are many similarities there are some vast differences.
He was also viewed as a superior leader along with his goodness of moral character. These are two of the traits that represent Proctor as a tragic hero in The Crucible. In act two John Proctor shows his goodness of a character by protecting his wife and fighting against her accusation of witchcraft. He even goes as far as ruining his reputation and admitting to the court of his affair with Abigail Williams. By doing this Proctor is risking the possibility to hang. Throughout act one of the play the readers are given the initiative that John Proctor still has lust feelings towards Abigail Williams every time they encounter each other. He shows goodness and loyalty to his wife by confronting Abigail Williams and proclaims that he no longer feels the way he had for her. In act two John Proctor asks Abigail Williams to admit to the court that she and the other girls are faking. John is expressing his goodness to prevent his wife from hanging. John Proctor is a well respected farmer in Salem, and attends church almost regularly. He holds a superior name in Salem, and with if the affair with Abigail Williams were to be known he would lose his reputation and possibly his life. The town would have never have accused John or Goody Proctor of witchery. The Proctors were considered privileged in Salem, they owned and farmed many acres of land.
