Many works of literature have the emotional capabilities of producing sentiments of sadness or joy. The writer initially creates the plot of the work, and then proceeds to masterfully write the words that will eventually produce emotion. The reader then indulges into the text. As the reader wafts in the plot, a sentiment, dependent on the nature of the work, is produced. Works that produce such sentiments of bliss or grief are plays. Two play that are on opposite sides of the spectrum of happiness and grief are The Importance of Being Earnest and the Romeo and Juliet, respectively. Their playwrights, Oscar Wilde and William Shakespeare, each used various methods to effectively produce "A play [that] should make you laugh or should make you …show more content…
One of those methods is the varied vocabulary seen throughout the text. Romeo and Juliet was written in the sixteenth century. Due to its difference in the nature of its vocabulary, quotes such as, "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” gain so much more sentiment and value (2.2.33 Shakespeare). As the reader reads this, the reader can feel the love that Juliet felt towards her love. Shakespeare uses these exchanges of love to lead the reader to the point of culmination, where the lovers kill themselves. Later in the play, Juliet realizes that her husband is dead and expresses her disdain. With Romeo 's body at her reach, she exclaims, “Drunk all, and left no friendly drop/ To help me after? I will kiss thy lips. / Haply some poison yet doth hang on them. / To make me die with a restorative" (5.3.163-166 Shakespeare). Shakespeare excellently conveys the pain that Juliet felt at realizing that the love of her life was dead. The feeling of sadness seeps through the words of the play and, thus, produces a heightened emotion of …show more content…
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare describes Romeo 's hopeless romantic self. Act one introduced the reader to a depressed and frustrated Romeo and the realization that he could not be with Rosaline. When he sees Juliet at the gathering at the Capulet 's home, Romeo says in awe, "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright./ It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night / As a rich jewel in and Ethiop 's ear-" (1.5.42-44 Shakespeare). Hours before, Romeo had been in a miserable world and was then exclaiming proclamation of love. The significance of this is that it shows how Shakespeare portrayed his characters. The reader easily learns the nature of the character, their personality, and their desires. As the play progresses, the reader slowly begins to hope that Romeo 's desire of finding love be fulfilled and that he lives happily with Juliet. The reader is then transported to a miserable world when Romeo meets his tragic end and with him
When Romeo is leaving Juliet's chamber and climbs down to the ground to leave Juliet sees him as pale: "O God, I have an ill-divining soul. Methinks I see thee now, thou art so low. As one dead in the bottom of a tomb"(Rom. 3.5.54-56). Juliet describes Romeo as looking dead when he is descending from the tower. In the scene Juliet is sensing something wrong but doesn't think much of it and brushes it off. She then after goes back to saying goodbye to Romeo. This shows that their love has caused Juliet to not think of the uneasy feeling she had felt. The purpose of this scene connects to the message of Shakespeare because it shows that in the end they both have killed themselves due to the fact that they love each other so much. The two lovers feel they can not live without each other and cause them to make the irrational choice of taking their lives. Another scene foreshadowing the two lovers death due to their love for each other is shown in a quote of dramatic irony. Romeo is begging Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet : “Do thou but close our hands with holy words, Then love-devouring death do what he dare” (Rom.2.6.6-7). Romeo is saying in this quote that as long as they are married then love-destroying death can do whatever it wants to them both. He is prioritizing his love for Juliet and her being his wife over what could happen to them in the future. Being so in
The two lovers in Shakespeare’s arguably most popular work, Romeo and Juliet, express two different types of love, and their personality is shown in the way that they love. The play, written by William Shakespeare in the 1590’s, is a tragedy born out of an ancient comedy of youth. However, Shakespeare’s diction impacts the mood of the piece, and empathy is evoked from the reader. As stated in the prologue, Romeo and Juliet is a tale of two star-crossed lovers who toss aside the bad blood between their families, fall in love, and marry. After a twist of fate, Romeo is banished and Juliet is engaged to another man by her father. Juliet decides to fake her death in order to stay true to her love, Romeo, but he does not receive the message of her plan. He learns of her death, journeys to her grave, and poisons himself. Juliet, seeing him dead, kills herself. The tragedy of the lovers heals the brood between the two families. Though they both meet the same fate, suicide in the name of love, they personify two different styles of love that lead them to the iconic double-suicide. Romeo Montague exemplifies the traits of a “mania lover”, while Juliet Capulet is a “ludus lover.”

Toward the beginning of the play, Romeo is saddened by his first love, Rosaline. There is little information about her in the play, but it is known that she broke Romeo’s heart. His amorous heart shows itself throughout the play through his words and actions. From Act I to Act II, Romeo is depressed because of Rosaline’s rejection, but as soon as he lays his eyes on Juliet, he falls in love. Romeo exclaims “O’. She doth teach the torches to burn bright!”(I, V) Without even communicating with Juliet, he proclaims his love. Romeo then proceeds to approach her and woe her into a kiss. His straightforward manner shows his amorous side. It didn’t take long for the two lovers to get married...

They were together for four days and because of the rivalry between the two families, they thought the only way to solve this problem was to commit suicide. Throughout the story, Romeo only sees the beauty of other women on the outside.
