Shakespeare and Irrational Love
Exploratory Essay - Emma Linklater
Love can mean so many different things. It is unconditional, selfless, accepting; an addictive feeling people crave. When a person falls in love, they fall in love with their heart and not their head. It’s an impulse from emotion, not rational judgement. Love is sometimes beyond control, defying logical reason. It is beautiful and insane all at once and doesn’t always make sense. Love and irrationality are set as the same, however rival entities, in a Midsummer’s Dream. As Shakespeare wrote, “...to say the truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays.” This is communicated through the story, specifically through four teenage lovers -- Hermia, Helena, Demetrius,

After a long night of mythical and unjustifiable events, disclosing of irrationality in many forms, where relationships only made sense on the inside and seemed unreasonable to everyone else, the morning was finally reached. At this point in the story, irrationality becomes slightly more rational when the Duke calls for a marriage of the four teenagers after finding them asleep in the morning light. Overall, the perception of love seems to come from the amount of time the personal relationship has lasted -- as if love can become suddenly rational the longer it’s existed. Therefore, marriage is the most rational form of love that exists. So as Theseus says for the awoken pair of lovers, “These couples shall eternally be knit … for the morning now is something worn,” their irrational love of the night will finally turn into rational for eternity, now that a ring is involved. Shakespeare captured the whole idea of love and everything brutal and beautiful about it 400 years ago, and it’s all the same now. In a world that continues to throw you obstacles, having a commitment makes it all a little bit easier. Once Hermia and Lysander, and Helena and Demetrius get married everything becomes perfect in their worlds. They’re now unstoppable with the other by their side. The change in mood and rationality changes the initial theme, turning from irrationality in love and jealousy to rational love. Shakespeare thinks this is where love meets rationality, but is it? I will never truly get to know what Shakespeare’s true intent was for changing the theme in the story, but there was definitely a reason behind the message he was trying to get across to the audience. It would make sense that he wanted us to believe that although love is all over the place, at some point it will finally make sense, and then can become so
Love, what a small word for being one of the most powerful and complicated emotion someone can receive. Love grants people an experience of other emotions such as, sadness, happiness, jealousy, hatred and many more. It is because of those characteristics that love creates that make it so difficult to define the emotion in a few words. In the play, “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, defy their parents in hopes of being able to be together and live a happy life. The characters in “Romeo and Juliet” show the characteristics of love through their words and actions throughout the play. The attributes the characters illustrate throughout the play are rage, loyalty, and sorrow.
In the play Romeo and Juliet ,by Shakespeare we are constantly bombarded with different meanings of words, contrasts, and characters who are quite irrational. They wish things upon themselves, and when they happen, are astonished. This piece of literature is filled with situations where the character intends one thing to happen, but his results are completely different. Throughout the following paragraphs the reader is to decide if the examples shown display opposite results from the original plan.
Every action made in A Midsummer Night’s Dream revolves around the idea of love. It is a concept which few people can understand because of the extremity a person can go through to go after their love. “Lovers and madmen have such seething brains, such shaping fantasies that apprehend more than cool reason ever comprehends.” Lovers see the world in a way which everyday people cannot comprehend. The idea of love leads to them making irrational choices which may seem
Throughout the works of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the themes of marriage and love are developed through the complexity of the situations that the characters encounter with one another. In Pride and Prejudice, the Bennet girls feel a pressure by society to find a man and get married by a certain age and that is simply how life is supposed to go for these young women. The women’s desires to settle are for the sole purpose of security and this can lead to unhappiness in a marriage of convenience. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the characters feel real true love and want to marry for the sole purpose of being together for the rest of their lives. This contrast of motives for marriage ultimately leads to a contention with a partner or love affair that will last a lifetime. Although the desire to marry in Pride and Prejudice may often lead to a dull relationship, the fairy world of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is not present and able to allow for everything to work out, therefore, Austen does a superior job at showing
Love is ironic. It can take you anywhere in the world unexpectedly, and turn you into a person that you never were. However, love is also two-faced, having both a negative and positive view. It is what drives you to the point where you do not know who you are anymore. In Shakespeare's story, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare perceives love with the personalities and actions of the characters, Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet are characterized as immature and irrational due to their "love." In addition, both characters fail to realize the reality of life and go towards the path of adolescence. Even though Romeo and Juliet are doomed at the end of the journey of "love," their demise was caused by their rash and silly decisions because their belief of everlasting love blinds them from reality and shapes their lives into an unstoppable time bomb.
Deceiving and irrational, love can be a challenging emotion to endure. It can be difficult to find happiness in love, and on the journey to find that happiness, love can influence one’s thought process. Shakespeare uses specific wording in his play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to poke fun while exploring the individual’s quest for love. The desire to find love and a happy ending with a lover is so strong in the foundation of mankind, that people will not accept a life without it. In fact, they would rather give up their attribute of rationality than their opportunity to find a significant other. The heart’s control of the mind can make a foolish man.
Different Aspects of Love Presented in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream Lysander + Hermia = True love? Sexual Attraction (Lust) ------------------------------------------------------- Titania + Oberon = Love or hate (Married )
William Shakespeare has provided some of the most brilliant plays to ever be performed on the stage. He is also the author of numerous sonnets and poems, but he is best known for his plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Romeo and Juliet. In this essay I would like to discuss the play and movie, "Romeo and Juliet", and also the movie, Shakespeare in Love.
Love plays a very significant role in this Shakespearian comedy, as it is the driving force of the play: Hermia and Lysander’s forbidden love and their choice to flee Athens is what sets the plot into motion. Love is also what drives many of the characters, and through readers’ perspectives, their actions may seem strange, even comical to us: from Helena pursuing Demetrius and risking her reputation, to fairy queen Titania falling in love with Bottom. However, all these things are done out of love. In conclusion, A Midsummer Night’s Dream displays the blindness of love and how it greatly contradicts with reason.
Love is defined as a strong affection, attachment, or devotion to a person or persons. Many people tend to think that if you are young , you cannot possibly be in love at thee same time. It is believed that especially when you are in your teenage year that you are too young to know whether or not you are really in love, but who can really say that they know the true meaning of love whether they are young or old. Despite all of this, there are still those people out there that believe in love at first sight and love being blind. In William Shakespear¹s play ³A Midsummer Night¹s Dream² he tells the story of four young Athenian teens who fall in love with each other, the queen of the fairies who falls in love with a man who has the head of a donkey, and the queen of the Amazons who falls in love with the duke of Athens who captures her from the rest of the Amazons. Sight plays a significant role to the to all of these circumstances that occur within the story.
Love is like a king who has the ruling power to controls how one acts, feels and even goes as far as controlling the relationship. As the fondness between newlyweds like Romeo and Juliet grows, the passion gains more power to control. This is because you fall so in love, the love makes you do some wild things. Ultimately, love can either be barbarous or sweet and will also bring a lover on a rollercoaster ride through the ups and downs.
In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," William Shakespeare explains the difficulties of the nature of love. Both false love and true love prevail in the end, leading the reader to come to the conclusion that all types of love can triumph. Hermia and Lysander represent the existence of a "true love", while Helena and Demertrius represent the opposite extreme. Shakespeare presents the idea that love is unpredictable and can cause great confusion. Love is something that cannot be explained, it can only be experienced. Shakespeare challenges us to develop our own idea of what love truly is.
One of the greatest questions addressed in both Romeo and Juliet and Shakespeare in Love is the question "does love conquer all?" Should one follow his heart or should one conform to society's view as to what is proper? In the movie, love does in fact conquer all, but, in the play, it does not. In the play Romeo and Juliet decide to follow their hearts and they do not conform to society's wishes. Romeo and Juliet end up dead and the feud between the Montagues and Capulets is over. In the case of Shakespeare in Love, Will loses Viola but his love for her lives on as seen in his later writings. So, one could argue that in some instances love does indeed conquer all and, in other cases, it does not. Following the path of true love can be a tragic one as seen in Romeo and Juliet. As for Shakespeare in Love, both characters meet society's wishes and therefore return to their normal lives never being quite the same.
What is love? In William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night love is nothing more than another disguise. It is an illusion that fools everyone. Orsino, Olivia, Sebastian, and Viola do any of them find love in the end? No, they find nothing more than a disguise, an illusion of love. By analyzing each of these characters, their thoughts and feelings of, and their experiences with love throughout this play, we can determine that in the end, none of them have found true, genuine love.
love is to lose the entire entity of oneself. There are times when one must choose a path that will lead towards sacrifice in order to achieve a greater acceptance of the reality that is life. Our life reflects upon the ability to understand the ongoing struggles in human nature. The late William Shakespeare truly understood the conflicts that occurred in the mind and body on man. He demonstrates his interpretation of life, love, and loss in the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
