“Blue is for boys and pink is for girls” is a common belief in the colours that differentiate boys from girls. Similarly, such beliefs extended to children’s toys whereby toys were labelled as “for boys” or “for girls”. It is obvious that there is a vast difference in the appearances and characteristics of “girl” toys and “boy” toys.

Toys for girls and boys differ greatly. An obvious characteristic would be the colours. It was noted that “girl” toys tend to be in pastel shades such as pink and purple whereas “boy” toys tend to be coloured more intensely, especially blue and black (Chiu et al., 2006). In addition, gender-typed toys differs in their shape as well whereby “boy” toys is often in an angular shape, while “girl” toys tend to be rounded (Iijima et al., 2001). As such, it has become a trend whereby children were given toys that highlighted their genders. In a longitudinal study, children were able to label themselves by their sex and exposure to gender-typed toys (Miller, Trautner & Ruble, 2006). The increased use of gender labelling coupled with the choice of toys that children are exposed to then foster gender schematisation (Carter & Levy, 1991). Therefore, it is apparent that children playing with gender-typed toys affects the formation of schemas, impacting their cognitive development.

Secondly, playing with gender-typed toys has an impact on the child's psychosocial development. It influences the children on expressing themselves and behave according to how they perceived their genders to be like.
