What is the difference between fiction and poetry? A fiction could be a short story or a novel of an imaginary story that someone can make up. Poetry is something that someone is expressing about or feelings. One of the fiction that I will be talking about is “Keith” and for the poetry I will discuss “Divorce”. The stories I’m going to compare and contracts both fiction and poem is how the story and the poem relates to each other, the emotions and tragedy of a lost one, and the settings of each one. This is going to flow into the point of view of both the poem and the fiction, then the setting of the fiction and poem on where it takes place, finally the tone and symbols that occurred in the fiction and poem.
In the book of “Keith” this story

The tone in the fiction story of “Keith” is that the story has a romantic and a hate tone to it. Now in the poem the tone of it is sad because they are married and happy at first, but then after they are getting a divorce and start to hate each other. The setting of the story “Keith” takes place at a high school that Keith and Barbra went to, while the poem the “Divorce” takes place in a court house. In the poem it talks about the symbols of the silver wear, the spoon, table, tined forks, table and the knives. For example in a quote “I want the scissors to be sharp and the table perfectly level when you cut me out of my life”. (“Billy Collins Quotes”) the part of this quote describes what they are going through but it does not specify that they hate each other. It shows that they are mad at each other and that love started to dissipate away. For example in one of Billy Collins quotes it says “I could look at you forever and never see the two of us together”. (“Billy Collins Quotes”) This shows that depending on the outcome of the situation the couple can get really nasty with each other or they can be civil with each other then what a lawyer can do or react. In the fiction story “Keith” we see that there is chemistry between Keith and Barbra they started to have feelings for each other. The point of the story is that the two high school students become friends and start to have feeling for …show more content…
In the poem the “Divorce” it takes place in a court house for the couple to a divorce between each other because there love has fallen apart between them and no longer feel like being with each other anymore and want to end it before it get worse. At the same time in the story “Keith” they don’t have lawyers that get involved with the relationship ending, while the couple in the poem “Divorce” does. Something ales that can be looked at between the fiction and the poem are the symbols that are used between the two stories. In the poem the “Divorce” the symbols that are used or represented in it are the spoon, fork, knife, and table. The spoon in the poem represents the love and happiness between the couple. The fork symbolizes the love that started to fall apart between the couple where they can’t stand each other and do not want to be around each other. The knife in the poem symbolizes the lawyers that are now being involved in their relationships and are helping to getting a divorce in court now. The table finally symbolizes the love that was once there and is now still and cold herded. It shows that the love is not going to develop or grow anymore in the relationship. This was a good way to use
Things like imagery, metaphor, and diction allow poetry to have the effect on the reader that the poet desires. Without these complex and abstract methods, poetry would not be the art form that it is. In Alan Dugan’s poem “Love Song: I and Thou”, he uses extended metaphor and line breaks to create tone and meaning in this chaotic piece.
Both authors use figurative language to help develop sensory details. In the poem It states, “And I sunned it with my smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles.” As the author explains how the character is feeling, the reader can create a specific image in there head based on the details that is given throughout the poem. Specifically this piece of evidence shows the narrator growing more angry and having more rage. In the short story ” it states, “We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among bones.” From this piece of text evidence the reader can sense the cold dark emotion that is trying to be formed. Also this excerpt shows the conflict that is about to become and the revenge that is about to take place. By the story and the poem using sensory details, they both share many comparisons.
In this poem Larkin uses a nonchalant tone to talk about his disappointing love life. Firstly the way he describes the women shows he only focuses on approaches rather than the person themselves- “a bosomy English rose/and her friend in specs I could talk to”. The fact that the persona used a separate line after the latter line to describe “her friend in specs” shows that the persona sees the friend in specs as inferior based on her appearance. This is because the noun “specs” has connotations of someone less attractive, especially when compared to a “bosomy English rose”. However this nonchalant tone changes later on in the poem. The persona shows emotion in the fact that he “gave a ten Guinea ring” to the “friend in specs”who left him. The fact that the persona only focuses on the material aspects of love shows how love has disappointed him. This also shows that his love life has been an annoyance to him, in the fact that he had to give something up (in this case a “ten Guinea ring”) to get something in return that he was displeased with. Consequently, the persona has actually revealed his feeling towards a disappointing love life, even though the persona did not really want to unveil the idea that love has affected him in any
Stories and poems are very different in many ways. Poems are often shorter than stories and have rhyme and meter. Stories do not have rhyme and meter and are usually much longer in length. Nevertheless a poem and a story can have many similarities. “Cherrylog Road” by James Dickey is a poem about a taboo relationship between two teenagers, while “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel García Márquez is about an “angel” that has washed up on the shore of this small town. Both “Cherrylog Road” and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” have somewhat twisted theological parallels to the Bible.
The way the points of views in each different poem creates a different theme for each poems using different points diction to convey meaning for each of the two poems. In the poem “Birthday” a humorous tone shows a newborn baby in a first person point of view. As opposed to the poem “The Secret Life of Books” which uses a third person point of view for a more serious tone. The two poems would change dramatically whiteout the different points of views because without the humor of the newborn baby being the narrator the poem might take a different spin on the meaning to create a more serious tone. As opposed to “The Secret Life of Books” where the poem is a big personification which if it was not in a third person point of view it might have a a humorous tome in the background. The two poems have many things that help contrast them with each other another one of these being the theme chosen to give each poem a separate identity, while “Birthday” has some background information in some of the diction it uses to World War II “The Secret Life of Books” has no need for the knowledge of background information just the curiosity of the brain
For Robert Browning’s poem it was a picture of the Last Duchess on the Wall. “That’s my last duchess painted on the wall, looking as if she were alive; I call That piece a wonder, now: Fra Pandol”(Line 1-3) On the other hand, Gabriel Spera’s poem starts with a poem of the “ex-husband” on the shelf. “That’s my ex-husband pictured on the shelf, smiling as if in love.”(Lines 1-2) These two poems are essentially a story, a story that begins with an image and delves into memory of both speakers. You could compare it to an inner monologue or a memoir. In analyzing both of the poems one will conclude that the pictures are symbols of memory and the past. This being one of the very first connections of similarity between My Last Duchess and My Ex-Husband.
...nal family. The second poem uses harsh details described in similes, metaphors, and personification. The message of a horribly bad childhood is clearly defined by the speaker in this poem. Finally, the recollection of events, as described by the two speakers, is distinguished by the psychological aspect of how these two children grew up. Because the first child grew up in a passive home where everything was hush-hush, the speaker described his childhood in that manner; trying to make it sound better than what it actually was. The young girl was very forward in describing her deprivation of a real family and did not beat around the bush with her words. It is my conclusion that the elements of tone, imagery, and the recollection of events are relevant to how the reader interprets the message conveyed in a poem which greatly depends on how each element is exposed.
... overall themes, and the use of flashbacks. Both of the boys in these two poems reminisce on a past experience that they remember with their fathers. With both poems possessing strong sentimental tones, readers are shown how much of an impact a father can have on a child’s life. Clearly the two main characters experience very different past relationships with their fathers, but in the end they both come to realize the importance of having a father figure in their lives and how their experiences have impacted their futures.
Poetry is a distinct form of literature that is widely known for its ability to skillfully use words to paint an image in the minds of readers. Poetry often has great depth encouraging readers to look beyond the lines to reveal a hidden message. This style of writing is intended to convey an intense emotional response using repetition, rhythm, sound, and structure sometimes producing a music like quality. Lyrics similarly use repetition, rhythm, sound, and structure but are intended to be sung and heard through music. Song lyrics often lack a similar emotional depth, however, some lyricists have produced music that is able to capture the same components as poetry.
...to help express the theme of the poems by illustrating the role the subject matter played in the life of the persona during their grieving period. Furthermore, metaphors helped communicate the thoughts and feelings of the personas by providing the reader with insight into the relationships and emotions covert in the poem. All in all, the poetic devices incorporated in each individual poetic composition played vital roles in the emotional and dramatic impact of these poems. And who knows, the immaculate use of these fundamental literary devices could be the key to successful love poems all around the world.
Millay uses romantic language. That is evident in the first line, "Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink". The romantic aspect of love is shown in the language of this poem. The poem is not directly about two lovers. It is more indirect, this is what two lovers may face. Her language is picturesque. "Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink / And rise and sink and rise and sink again;" It is as if the poem was showing a picture of a man in the sea that is struggling to survive and throughout the course of bobbing up and down he continues to see a pole or paddle, but he just can't reach it. There are more ideas that can be pictured easily throughout the poem, because of the language that Millay uses. "Love can no fill the thickened lung with breath, / Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;" These lines create an interesting picture in your mind.
In the first stanza, “one leaned on the other as if to throw her down” symbolism has been used to show the intensity of the embrace between the two. In stanza two, “and finally almost uprooted him” symbolism has been used to show how much the female dominates in this relationship. “He was thin, dry, insecure one” this symbolized that the male did not have much power nor say in the relationship.
As one character closes the door on a relationship in one poem another character on yearns for one in another poem.
The author uses imagery, contrasting diction, tones, and symbols in the poem to show two very different sides of the parent-child relationship. The poem’s theme is that even though parents and teenagers may have their disagreements, there is still an underlying love that binds the family together and helps them bridge their gap that is between them.
Because “woman” and “moon rondeau” helps to understand that they deal with relationships, “woman” and “simile” use imagery a lot to be able to show the expression of how people are, and “simile” and “moon rondeau” shows that if people work together things can be accomplished. The point I'm trying to prove is that I want the reader to be able get a better understanding of the poems as they[poems] are read. Because in “woman” it deals with relationships but it shows a the failure in it and it may also use imagery but it continues to be using different types of it, in “moon rondeau” it deals with relationships but shows the good in it by working together and having a strong bond, in “simile” the imagery used is only between people and deer and it expresses that as deer you can work together or not do anything. My final thought on my poem analysis is that I agree with all that the three poems have to convey in their writing and that it helps to better understand the poet's thoughts and feelings put into their
