Dignity and respect; two words that are often used together in the same sentence, or used to carry the same meaning. However, if one were to give extreme attention to detail, the two words are not completely the same, but rather they coexist to compliment each other’s meaning. For instance, it is almost guaranteed that upon looking the two up in the dictionary, the two of them will be found in each other’s definition. Dignity, in simple terms, is the worth that one believes he or she has earned and is entitled to. It is a sense of honor that one carries with them like a knight would a sword. On the other hand, respect is specifically that honor that one gives to others at their discretion. It is not the sword itself but rather the honor of
having the skills deemed necessary to wield it. An example of this could be the character Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvestor Stallone, in the movie Rocky. The movie is essentially about Rocky’s desire to earn dignity and respect from anyone who knows him. In the movie, during a scene where Rocky is ice skating with his soon-to-be girlfriend Adrian, he tells her the reason he got into fighting was because he had something to prove. Rocky wanted to prove that he had the “stuff” to be a “ good pro”, which seemed to be the theme throughout the whole movie. Upon watching the movie, one would say that dignity is so important to rocky because he is constantly disrespected by his society, his coaches and friends, and by Apollo Creed and his representatives.
Respect is a such a simple concept and a virtue that should be simple to follow. It means treating other people and animals in a dignified manner. Respect doesn’t mean that people need to hug everyone they come across or hold their opinion higher than everyone elses. Respect means treating others as equals and acknowledging that as human
Dignity is not found in a person’s position, but in the way their actions reflect upon them. The novel
Human Dignity: We are all created in the image of God and therefore should be treated as humans with dignity and respect. The value or worth of human life.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN, 2009) defines dignity as treating someone as you or your family would want to be treated, when they are feeling vulnerable. According to ( Matiti & Baillie,2011) in modern world the word dignity has lost its meaning, whether it is intentionally or unintentionally, nurses have become very mechanical, trying to give care for dummies rather than human beings, who have emotions, feelings and self-respect, and not realising what impact patients will have when nurses show this kind of attitude. Patient centred care is vital for all nurses, without, discriminating against colour, gender, race, and religious beliefs. Following the code of conduct which is expected of the nurse, working according to the needs of the patients, being a good listener and respecting them. When the nurse shows dignity and respect, she/he tends to develop a therapeutic relationship with patient which in turn results in good health and rehabilitation (NMC, 2008).
Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
Honor is one of the many things that cannot have one accepted definition, it and its meaning change from person to person, culture to culture, time period to time period. A definition for honor that is generally accepted is that it has to do with high respect and nobility. This, however, only raises more questions. What do different peoples, different cultures, or even people of different times think of honor? These are some of the questions that we will answer, or at least try to. In this report, we will go over what honor is within other periods of time (including modern day), what it is within different cultures, describe what honor is to an American, and compare this American honor to that of another people, the Shi’a Islamic people.
Dignity is to do with how people feel, think and behave in relation to the worth or value of themselves and others. To treat someone with dignity is to treat them as being of worth, in a way that is respectful of them as valued individuals. (RCN 2008). It is important to respect patients and individuals because every patient is different and will have different needs and wants. So it is important for nurses to pay attention to these needs and wants, as it will help them to respect each patient’s dignity correctly. Nurses must respect and defend the dignity of each stage of the human life and they are also to respect their own dignity. When treating a person with dignity, it is important to treat them with respect and the sort of respect they would like.
In the epics of both Homer and Virgil, the meaning and politics of honour play a significant role in the decisions and actions of the characters. Honour involves arbitrary set of rules, so just what is is and why did people need to maintain these rules at all? In these poems, honour is linked to a hero’s possessions, identity, and deed. All three are important, but one’s deeds seem to matter the most and without performing great deeds, honour cannot be had the other two ways.
The difference between “pride” and “self-respect” is not in class as many believe but in quantity. While the word “proud” may be perceived as arrogant or conceited, “self respect” does the modification of the person under discussion. Self-respect can be thus referred to as the sophisticated form of one’s ego or pride. A person with self-respect is not necessarily egoistic as he or she may lead you to believe but is full of assertiveness, confidence and self-efficacy. One who carries pride is an illusion of superiority. Self-respect can be classified as the “dignity” of a person. One with self-respect would not show inferiority but at times of need would seek help and his ego would not be a barrier to doing so.
In three seperate dictionaries, respect is defined as a regard for or appreciation of the worth or value of someone or something. In my opinion, respect goes far beyond this definition. Respect is the cornerstone of the society in which we live. Although many look at respect as simply treating another person or thing with kindness, this word has many different aspects. For instance, I would not give an elder the same type of respect that I would give my peers or myself. Respect is not considered a neccessity in this world but, I can’t imagine a person getting very far in life without this virtue.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, dignity is “The state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect.” (Oxford Dictionary, 2017). Living a life of dignity is individual to each person, but regardless of who they are, or what illness they may be suffering from, they deserve dignity and respect in the way that they are cared for. The cornerstone of nursing care is providing dignity to our patients. The issue can arise when a patient chooses to end their life versus letting the disease or aging process take its natural course, and the individual beliefs that nurses feel about this very difficult topic.
Respect is something given without expecting anything in return. Growing up, I learned that even the little things can change someone's day. Offering your chair to an elderly person, a kind deed to someone in need, or a word of encouragement to someone having a bad day. My 90 year old great grandma has lived in my home for 11 years. Through the recent years, I call her every day on my way home asking if she is in need of anything. I have become one of her caregivers repaying her for all the years of encouragement and love.
Dignity is defined as “the quality or state of being worthy, honored, or esteemed. (Webster, 1828). Treating patients with respect and dignity can make the difference in their response to illness. Patients want to be treated as individuals that have a medical condition and are seeking help and in the same vein be treated with respect.

Exploring and discussing how to act honorably toward each other is a place to start. The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be. How can you be a person of integrity? First, figure out what integrity (honor) is. My mother used to say to treat others the way you wanted to be treated. Does anyone do that these days? Well, I know that I don't want to be cut off in traffic, or yelled at, or bumped into rudely at the grocery store, or left picking up garbage all over my yard from the street. So I could try not to do those things to other people. I won't cut off others in traffic, or yell, or act rude at the grocery store, or throw garbage in the street. That's just a place to start. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
