Parizad Batty-Avari EYE11-5.1 Identify reasons for special dietary requirements Each child is different in his own unique way which may include his food habits and requirements. Following are the reasons for special dietary requirements Allergies: Some children may have food allergies which could be mild or life threatening. A child with a food allergy will have a sudden and or potentially serious reaction if they come in contact with certain foods. Common food allergies include nuts, milk, wheat and eggs. In some cases the allergic reaction may be so serious that it may affect the child’s breathing. Hence it is important that the child doesn’t come in contact with the food he is allergic to and that their food should be prepared separately. …show more content…
Records need to be up to date with accurate information. Reasons for good record keeping: Allergies and food requirements: Serious incidents caused by food allergies can be avoided by keeping records of children with food allergies so that no child consumes food that is not meant to be consumed by him/her. Information about these children is displayed in the team kitchen, the nurse’s room and respective classrooms. These children are also given red food mats with pictures of food they must not consume. Early years setting work closely with parents to ensure that their child’s food requirement is still accurate. Provision of babies’ bottles: Records are kept for making and feeding babies off their bottles. Records and checks are maintained to ensure babies are given the correct formula or types of milk and quantity. After each feed the amount consumed by the baby must be recorded and sent home for parents’ knowledge. Food Intake: The parents and care givers need to be informed about the food intake of their children especially the ones with diabetes. Parents and early years settings also share information if the older children have not eaten well as
Following my first sip of milk at the age of one, with the resulting hives and coughing that ensued, I involuntarily joined the community of fifteen million Americans afflicted by food allergies. Living everyday with additional allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish has, out of necessity, sharpened my compulsiveness with ingredients and food preparation, but furthermore has spurred me to intervene on behalf of fellow members in this emerging epidemic. The Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) national organization has been a source of education and support in my own life, and subsequently has aided my efforts to raise awareness among peers, and to nurture my advocacy involvement. Selected as a member of FARE’s Teen Advisory
Anaphylaxis shock occurs when someone who is sensitive to a substance they are exposed to which results in constricted airway and possible inability to breathe. Parents with children that experience any form of allergic reaction most notify the day care provider so appropriate precautionary steps are taken to maintain a safe health environment for these children. As allergy conditions have slowly increased within our society day care providers have taken more aggressive action to protect these children by extending a “peanut free environment” within the school setting. The percentage of children who experience their first allergic reaction outside the home has increased by 77% over past years daycare providers need to be trained and prepared to handle all types of allergic reaction situations. Steps that a provider and parent should take are as follows: 1. Food allergy action plan, 2. Inform all staff, 3. Post child’s name and allergy,
A food allergy is an exaggerated immune response triggered by a particular protein found in an allergen. Different people have different allergic reactions; ranging from mild to life threatening, whereby an anaphylactic reaction takes place. Symptoms of the allergic diseases may be caused by exposure of the skin to a chemical, of the respiratory system to particles of dust or any other substance, or of the stomach and intestines to a particular food (“What Is Food Allergy?”). In the last few decades, there seems to be an increased media and medical interest on the subject of allergies in general, but mostly on peanut allergies. According to Miranda Waggoner, a Princeton University researcher, no medical research agenda can be found prior to the 1980s. Are peanut allergies really getting more severe and prevalent that the medical community now puts a little more effort into studying the disorder? Or are people just more aware now that word travels faster than ever through the World Wide We...

The attendee will also eat at least one and half cups of fruit and one and half cups of vegetables daily for the next 6 mont...
It is apparent that living an unhealthy lifestyle, as well as eating poorly, negatively affects one’s health. From a young age it is quickly learned which foods are considered healthful as opposed to junk food. It is a parents responsibility to supervise the intake of their child's food, however there is a higher risk than ever before of childhood obesity.

In the United States, over three million people are diagnosed with food allergies every year, and over 50 million people have an allergy to some type of food. This number includes one in every 13 children. Most people are born with their allergies; however, allergies can develop at any age, and that is what happened to me. I developed an allergy when I was 14 years old. It was then that some troubling and deleterious side effects started happening to me. When people develop food allergies, their immune systems overreact to normally harmless food proteins. (foodallergy.org). These attacks can affect people in a multitude of ways; they can cause hives, difficulty in breathing, stomach aches, and many more symptoms.

The most common triggers to stimulate anaphylaxis in children are food products such as peanuts, dairy, seafood, etc. Exposure to any of these allergens can result in severe anaphylactic reactions within 20 minutes. Australian Resuscitation Council, 2012).However the doctors discuss the history of symptoms occurring in children suffering with peanut allergy before declaring them to be anaphylactic and prescribing medication. 45, is described as a focus on the well-being of the patient and involving a team of health professionals to provide education and health promotion to the patient and patient’s family and collaborate together to decide the best choices for the betterment of the patient. In our K12 child nutrition program, our patients are referred to as students. Our students range in age from three years old to 18 years old. The USDA federally-funded meals are not a patient-centered type of care as it is a blanket-mandate for all K12 students in the US. Even though this mandate is not patient-centered care, the reason for this mandate is to provide all school aged children access to healthy meals not only during the school year but, also during the summer months when school is not in
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Instead children should have three healthy meals with snacks in between. It is also important for children to have good self care behaviors (including bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth), and adequate sleep.
In a society where food comes in abundance, people are overeating. Compared to the beginning of the twenty first century when only about five percent of the population had diabetes (Nazarko, 2009), today that number is rising and continuing to do so. This is starting to affect the health of children diagnosed with diabetes at a young age. When a child has diabetes, it becomes very serious since children are at such a young age to deal, process, and handle the responsibilities that come with this disease.... ...
