I think the author believes that the biggest mistake that children make as they attempt to mature in the world around them is that they do so many actions without thinking about what could happen as a result of what they do. I know this by how Lily Owens acts during the story. A time that this happens during the story is when Lily decides to leave his father and learn more about her mother, who was accidentally killed by Lily when she was a toddler. Her reasoning for this is that she hates how she is treated by her father, T-Ray, and how horrid his punishments could be to her. For example, she gets scrapes on her knee caps from kneeling on top of bread grits as a constant punishment put on by T-Ray for doing things like going outside of the …show more content…
house without asking. But her eagerness to leave her father made her tell her father that he should rot in hell in a letter she wrote before she left. She didn’t even think about how mad his father could be at her saying this.
If little things like going outside of your house could make him mad enough to hurt you, imagine how mad her father could be towards terrible insults made toward him. I know she was mad but Lily, like what many children do, didn’t think how people could react to their actions. This action actually did backfire on Lily because when she tried to call her father about how he reacted to her running away, T-Ray was furious. He yelled at Lily a lot and even insulted how dumb she was for leaving. Another moment in the story that proves the biggest mistake is that children do too much without thinking was when Lily Owens left to a city she barely even knows about. As said at the beginning, Lily left his father because of his bad treatment.To fulfill her hope of knowing more about her mother, Lily went to a city called Tiburon, in South Carolina. Lily’s reasoning for going to this city was that a picture that was owned by her mother had that the name of that city on the back of it. Before this, Lily had never gone to the city or knew what it looked like. So when Lily and her housekeeper, Rosaleen, going through an unknown city made Lily confused about where the two would go
to. It also caused Rosaleen to get mad at Lily for going to a city just because it was on the back of one of her mother’s pictures. A bad relationship between the two runaways occurred until the next day. Another bad consequence for going to Tiburon could have happened to the two of them, homelessness. But this luckily did not occur because of a shop owner telling Lily where the picture she had was from, which was the family where Lily and Rosaleen mainly stayed at during the story. Even though it did go Lily’s way at the end of the story, with Lily getting to stay with August’s family instead of with T-Ray. Lily’s actions could have gotten him into lots of hardship and pain if she wasn’t as lucky during the story. This is also true with children these days. It could be tests at school, arguments with friends, or even parties, children could make decisions in situations without thinking that could cause bad things to happen to them, like what happened to Lily Owens in the story. Saying this, my evidence proves that the biggest mistake that children make as they attempt to mature in the world around them is that they do so many actions without thinking about what could happen as a result of what they do.
It was times throughout the book the reader would be unsure if the children would even make it. For example, “Lori was lurching around the living room, her eyebrows and bangs all singed off…she had blisters the length of her thighs”(178).Both Lori and Jeannette caught fire trying to do what a parent is supposed to do for their child. Jeannette caught fire at the age of three trying to make hotdogs because her mother did not cook for her leaving Jeannette to spend weeks hospitalized. She was burnt so bad she had to get a skin graft, the doctors even said she was lucky to be alive. The children never had a stable home. They were very nomadic and a child should be brought up to have one stable home. No child should remember their childhood constantly moving. This even led to Maureen not knowing where she come from because all she can remember is her moving. The children had to explain to her why she looked so different is because where she was born. They told Maureen “she was blond because she’d been born in a state where so much gold have been mined, and she had blue eyes the color of the
Teddy is a character that understood how important his imagination is, but is too young to put this understanding into words. Teddy’s ambition and imagination is being ruined by his aunt and uncle so that he becomes like them. His imagination, which is the key to his future in society, is now reformed. Clearly, life has never been easy for anyone in this world. Instead, it is filled with plenty of obstacles. Children are known as the future generation, but there will be no future when adults allow them to become corrupt. Are adults overprotective of their children? To what point do we protect children? Where should the line be drawn? Along with those questions is how easily children can be influenced by these same adults. Two poets, Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins, express the ideas of how easily children can be manipulated and how sometimes adults think they are protecting their innocent children, when in reality they are not. Wilbur and Collins express these ideas in their poems through numerous literary devices. The literary devices used by Wilbur and Collins expose different meanings and two extremely different end results. Among the various literary devices used, Wilbur uses imagery, a simple rhyme scheme and meter, juxtaposition of the rational and irrational, and a humorous tone to represent the narrator’s attempt to “domesticate” irrational fears. Conversely Collins uses symbols, historical interpretations, imagery, diction and other literary devices to depict the history teacher’s effort to shield his students from reality. In the poems, “A Barred Owl,” by Richard Wilbur, and “The History Teacher,” by Billy Collins, both poets convey how adults protect and calm children from their biggest, darkest fears and curiosities.
Rolph is introduced as an innocent young boy early on in the story. He “doesn’t speak up all that often” (1) and is “too young to notice” (1) the extremely sexual relationship between Mindy and Lou. The generalization Mindy brings forward for Rolph is “structural affection” (5) in which Rolph “will embrace and accept his father’s new girlfriend because he hasn’t yet learned to separate his father’s loves and desires from his own” (8). Rolph’s fragile depiction foreshadows the importance of nurturing vulnerable children. If a child is already susceptible to emotional confusion or damage in their youth, it is important to provide them with an extremely positive upbringing to give them confidence to make their own decisions as they mature. Lily’s actions are completely driven by her desire to fit into the upper class part of society and her need to have money to successfully do this. The actions she partakes in to achieve these goals are sometimes harshly judged by other characters, but The House of Mirth seems to almost draw sympathy for Lily from the fact that she is stuck in this role she cannot remove herself from. Even through showing other life paths like Gerty Farish’s, Lily’s options for an independent life where she can live the way she desires are limited. What she was taught as a child, the choices she makes because of her childhood, how being poor is viewed by society, and the unjust view of Lily’s actions are what ultimately both destroys Lily and results in her being shown sympathy.
Ray also has strong prejudice. In the house, T. Ray often mentions Lily “colored women [are not] smart” (78). As a result it affects Lily’s sensibility, because she says, “I thought they could be smart, but not as smart as me, me being white” (78). Also T. Ray often calls black people ‘nigger’ which we should never. When Lily and Rosaleen; her housekeeper went to the town, they got into the trouble and T. Ray picked Lily up and blames her. “…Couldn’t pick somebody normal? He’s the meanest nigger-hater in Sylvan…” (38). Additionally, when T. Ray comes to try to take her back in Sylvan, he says, “So you’ve been here the whole time, staying with colored women Jesus Christ” (291), like it is a bad thing to stay with them, because it doesn’t necessary to mention people’s race at that circumstance. She feels that caregivers don’t trust their children and that they rather than giving their child commands. I see some similarities of my life and experiences that I found in the text. When I was growing up, I pretty much had a childhood. Me and my sister will play outside and do things without being supervised by my parents. We were able to explore outside and make up games to play with other kids. When it rain and snow me and my sister will use our imagination and create games such as house or school. My parents didn 't control our childhood they didn 't create activities, nor tell me what to do with our free time. I was pretty much free. But as I got older, parents started to be involved in my life and started to plan my future. The concepts of the worldviews, biases, and assumptions that are used in the text is that parents make it difficult for their children to interact with their surroundings because it ends with the consequences. Ellen claims that a child should learn how to use their imagination instead of following the rules. Responsibility comes with a lot of committed and you can never let anyone down. In the novel, the parents opt out of their responsibility for taking care of the children. The children learn to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another. The family lacks of responsibility and in contrast Jeannette struggles with knowing that her family represents a lack of moral responsibility. Jeannette ultimately chooses a more material and less idealistic notion of responsibility than her parents, but she also continued to try to understand why her family is unable to take responsibility for their own actions. Jeannette later on becomes responsible for her own actions and takes care of her younger brother and sister. As a result, she was faced with the challenge of responsibility and taking matters in her own hands. Responsibility is a daunting task that needs a lot of commit for and is a difficult challenge to overcome.

His parents engaged him in conversations that promoted reasoning and negotiation and they showed interest in his daily life. Harold’s mother joked around with the children, simply asking them questions about television, but never engaged them in conversations that drew them out. Children living in this type of environment may feel anger, shame, and sadness. They are forced to take on adult roles much earlier because their parents are irresponsible. For instance it shows this in The Glass Castle because the children are forced to make their own meals and fend for themselves because Rex is too busy drinking and Rose Mary is careless (Walls). Alcoholism takes away children’s childhood by forcing them to take on adult roles. Another example of this is when Billy Deel is forced to take care of himself while his father is passed out and constantly drinking, “Billy had a lot of unsupervised time on his hands” (Walls 82). Billy was greatly affected by his father’s alcohol abuse his personality didn’t maturely develop like other children. This is shown when he sexually assaults Jeanette and doesn’t see anything wrong with it, he yells on page 87 “Guess what? I raped you!” (Walls). This statement proves that parents make a huge impact on children, and when children don’t have that, they suffer. Alcohol abuse is not an individual problem, it affects everyone surrounding that person. It isn’t fair for children to be raised in that environment and government should take greater action to protect the children’s safety by removing them from homes like
She loses her job she had at a factory and almost got raped by her boss. She goes without a job for a while and Lavaughn even had to miss a day of school because Jolly didn’t go home for two days. The story line could be seen as a lesson to many teenagers, especially girls. Getting pregnant at 14 or 15 could change your whole life and that could be one thing the author is trying to get across to the readers. The adult world is a cold and terrifying place. There are robberies, shootings, murders, suicides, and much more. If you were to be a small child, perhaps age 5, and you were to look in at this world, you would never know how bad it actually was, just from a single glance. Children have a small slice of ignorant bliss, which helps to keep them away from the harsh of reality. It isn’t until later, when they encounter something that opens their eyes and shows them, that they truly start to understand the world we live it. Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird shows the many differences between the simplicity of being a kid and the tough decisions and problems that adults must face every day.
