The Nonfiction Drama The Diary of Anne Frank written by Frances Goodrich, and Albert Hackett is about a thirteen-year-old girl— Anne-- who experiences her time hiding in Amsterdam during the holocaust with her family— the Franks—and the Van Daans. They are hiding in an Annex-- a attic place on overhead-- where her dad, Mr. Frank has his own spice shop. During the drama, Anne keeps a diary of which she keeps all her experiences during her time in hiding. In each excerpt, each person shows some sort of sacrifice. Every minute the “family” is living in the Annex, the longer their lives are in danger trying to live through the war. Therefore, sacrifice puts one in danger, but keeps others safe. To begin, the Van Daans perceive a constant use of sacrifice throughout the play. The character —Mr. Van Daan— complains endlessly, yet he still sacrifices his life every day, living in the annex. As well, in the beginning, Mrs. Van Daan takes her most prized possession-- her fur coat— but, she looks very suspicious doing it. Since the hiders cannot bring suitcases, they have to wear what they pack. Mr. Van Daan argues, “It’s a wonder we weren't arrested, walking along the streets… petronella with a fur coat in July…” (Goodrich and Hackett 706). Furthermore, Peter is fed up with everything. As Peter said to Anne, “But when I think, I get mad! Look at us, hiding out for two years. Not able to move! Caught her like… waiting for them to come and get us… and all for what?” (Goodrich and Hackett 775). Peter just wants to have a normal life and leave; he thinks that hiding with no one around, making no noise, would be just as bad as being in a concentration camp. He is making a sacrifice by staying in hiding, not giving away his location, and being loyal to the annex
