In Anne Frank’s book, The Diary of a Young Girl, there are several conflicts. The main conflict is internal, and more specifically, it is man vs. self. The conflict is Anne having to adjust her life, attitude, demeanor, and etc. to live in extremely close quarters with strangers, at the same time trying to discover and learn who she really is. The Diary of a Young Girl is not only about the purging of the Jews in World War II, it is a true story about a young girl whose life is turned around as a result of the war, and how she must grow and adapt to her new situation. It is a tale about the discovery of one’s self, a book about adjusting and pruning a mentality and personality, amidst a raging war. Life before the Annex for Anne was simple, …show more content…
she was a well liked girl that had opportunity. However, when World War II started, Anne was thrust into a new environment, one where she lived in complete secrecy, shrouded away from the Nazis and invasion. Anne later manages to adapt to her new surroundings and life. The conflict is resolved at the end of the book. She grows emotionally in many ways whilst staying at the Annex and she adapts for the well being of the other inhabitants. A way the conflict is resolved is when Anne decides to talk more to herself. Frank writes on page 129, “A new idea: during meals I talk more to myself..they’re glad they don’t have to listen to my...chatter...I don’t have to get annoyed by their opinions...better to keep them to myself,”. This shows Anne’s personal and internal determination to adapt to the circumstances by not causing more tension. Because Anne was willing to change her ways to help out, it proves that the conflict is internal because the change is happening within Anne. During her time at the Annex, Anne is often left to contemplate herself and would often spend nights crying or laughing about her faults. With that amount of contemplation, she is able to change and become wiser, looking at her relationship with her mother from her mother’s perspective, something she has never done. Frank writes on page 158-159, “It’s true, she didn’t understand me, but I didn’t understand her either...we were caught in a vicious circle of unpleasantness and sorrow...those violent outbursts on paper are simple expressions of anger that, in normal life, I could have worked off by locking myself in my room and stamping my foot a few times or calling Mother names behind her back....I've grown wiser...I manage to hold my tongue...I soothe my conscience with the thought that it’s better for unkind words to be down on paper than for Mother to have to carry them around in her heart,”. This shows the reader the contemplation Anne had about her relationship with her mother and how she has matured from spouting cruel words to her mother to actually writing them. She never used to contemplate what her mother thought, but she then began to think about what she felt. This also proves internal conflict because ever since she moved into the Annex, she began to contemplate her relationship with her mother and she started to control herself and express herself on paper. A song that can be related to this conflict is “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. The conflict in the diary is about changing and adaptation and the “Man in the Mirror” is about changing in a personal way for the better. Jackson sings, “I’m gonna make a change/For once in my life/It’s gonna feel real good/...If you want to make the world a better place/Take a look at yourself, and then make a change,”. This reflects Anne’s thoughts about her deciding to change herself to improve the atmosphere in the Annex. Another lyric that connects to the conflict is, “I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love,”. This is similar to Anne’s realization that she has been selfish and was unable to understand others, specifically her mother. Anne might have never realized her selfishness and faults if she had not moved to the Annex. She was forced to adapt to an environment where she was examined constantly by the other inhabitants, allowing her to reflect. In conclusion, the conflict in The Diary of a Young Girl is man vs self. Part Four:Theme In Anne Frank’s novel, The Diary of a Young Girl, there are multiple themes.
One of the themes is that kindness can be found everywhere. In one instance, Mr. Voskuijl made them handmade gifts such as an ashtray for Mr. van Daan, a picture frame for Mr. Dussel, and bookends for Mr. Frank. Frank writes on page 77, “Today we heard that Mr. van Daan’s ashtray, Mr. Dussel’s picture frame and Father’s bookends were made by none other than Mr. Voskuijl,”. This shows that kindness can be found everywhere because this man that they did originally know decided to make gifts for people that were considered the enemy because they were Jewish. Mr. Voskuijl knew that he could get in trouble for just knowing about their presence, but he still made gifts for them. Secondly, another instance is the friendship Anne found with Peter. Peter was first described by Anne as, “a shy awkward boy whose company won’t amount to much...but no one takes Peter seriously anymore, since he’s hypersensitive and lazy,”. On the other hand, Peter thought of Anne in the beginning as an annoying chatterbox. Surprisingly, Anne later finds an extremely close bond with Peter, finding care and kindness that she did not expect. She did not expect anything from him, but instead found comfort and romantic attraction. Thirdly, another instance of kindness was found in Mr. van Hoeven. Frank writes on page 259, “To be on the safe side, I didn’t call the police. I thought it wouldn’t be wise in your case. I don’t know anything, but I have my suspicions...Mr. van Hoeven obviously suspects we’re here, because he always delivers the potatoes at lunchtime. A decent man!”. This quote shows kindness because Mr. van Hoeven should have under law notified the police, however he did not for the sake of the innocent Jews. Mr. van Hoeven could not have been 100 percent sure of their presence but he still tried to make their lives easier by delivering potatoes around lunchtime. Lastly, the biggest example of kindness in the
diary is from the employees that know of the Annex. Mr. Kugler, Mr. Kleiman, Jan and Miep Gies, and Bep and her father, Mr. Voskuijl. All of them could suffer work camps and prison if caught, which some of them eventually did. In one instance, Mr. Dussel requested that Miep get him a book, one that was against Mussolini which was banned. Miep was later knocked down by the SS. Frank writes on page 130, “He actually had Miep bring him a book, an anti-Mussolini tirade, which had been banned. On the way here she was knocked down by an SS motorcycle. She lost her head and shouted, “You brutes!”...I don’t dare think what would have happened if she’d been taken down to headquarters,”. This shows kindness because Miep risked imprisonment for getting a banned book for Dussel. In conclusion, there are many themes in The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and that kindness can be found everywhere.
Frank is good at heart. Mr. Frank is a very selfless and caring man. He cares for everyone in the annex. When Mrs. Frank finds Mr. Van Daan stealing food, she wants him and Mrs. Van Daan to leave. However, Mr. Frank disagrees. “ You’re speaking in anger. You cannot mean what you are saying.” Mr. Frank doesn’t want the Van Daans to have to live out on the streets. He wants them to be safe in the annex, rather than in the streets where they could be caught. This shows that Mr. Frank is good at heart because he cared for the Van Daans. He didn’t want anyone to be taken or killed by the Germans. Mr. Frank has a good heart because he cared about Jews and everyone in the
Anne Frank was a thirteen year old Jewish girl who was forced into hiding in 1942. Her family and another family, the Van Daans, hid in the back of her father, Otto Frank's office building in what they called the "Secret Annex" for the next two years, until they were discovered by a Nazi group called the Gestapo and arrested. It was during her time in the Secret Annex that Anne wrote in a diary that she had named Kitty, telling it of her experiences in the the annex, reported the position of the war and its most memorible events, and shared her personal feelings on the situation. The diary became an outlet throug...
Anne Frank a young girl who died believing that people are good at heart. ‘’You could not do this you could not do that.’’ A quote from Anne Frank. Found in the collection book page number 283. In this essay, I will be showing you why Anne might feel certain ways during this hardship. Also what it reveals about her character. Anne is a brave young girl who always does what she feels is right and her way of taking on life and its challenges is taught for a person to do in that time and she managed to take on so much. In advance to Anne hard life, she keeps a diary to share her thoughts and option on life in hiding during the dreadful event called World War Two. This dairy was a miracle to the world. They now know the hardship and struggles that the Jews had two indoor. Anne dairy opened so many doors for journalists and many others. They have a diary of a real end of the Holocaust in their hands.
Anne's optimistic personality created the hope that she had for her future. Each day she could do nothing but just hope that one day everything will turn around and be better. In The Diary Of Anne Frank play, she expressed, "It'll pass, maybe not for hundreds of years, but someday..." Deep down inside, she had the hope that all of the disgusting things that Hitler alongside his army performed, would all vanish one day. She knew for the most part that the hatred may never go away, but imagining that it might, made things at least a bit better. Anne's situation was pure negativity, with almost nothing good about it. The only good thing that may have come out of it for her were the relationships that she created with everyone in hiding with her. From the Van Daans, to Miep, she bonded amazing friendships with each person involved. Aside from that, Anne's personality stuck out more than anyone's because of the hope that she had, in such a terrible situation.
Imagine what it would have been like to be cooped up in an attic during the Holocaust, with only very little space eight people in one little attic. For the Franks and the Van Danns it was eight people and a cat for most the time. With no one to talk to they have to keep everything in, unless they write it. In “The Diary of Anne Frank” the two families live this way. Anne and Peter were two of the characters who experienced this. Anne is a teenage girl who has a sister and lives during the Holocaust. Anne also had a lot of friends so she was popular; she loved to read and write in her journal. She was very loud and obnoxious. In Act one Scene two ,Peter says “I was always by myself, while you were in a big crowd of people.” This shows that Anne was very popular and is used to people; while Peter was not used to as much attention and people. Then in Act one Scene three, Mr.Van Dann says, “ Why can’t you be more like your sister Margot?” This proves that the Van Danns like Margot more than they like Anne ; it also proves they think Anne is obnoxious.
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl narrates the journey of adolescent Anne Frank during World War II. The diary allows insight into the changes Anne went through during the war after going into hiding to avoid persecution. Over the course of her time in hiding she matured, and used her diary to voice her innermost thoughts and desires. Anne’s diary shows how she came to terms with change as a result of her circumstances, and how she herself changed as a result.
Almost everyone has heard the legacy about this young, teenage World War II icon. Her story, her family, her personal life, and almost everything in her life; the reason for this was her diary. Her diary was published by her father, Otto Frank. Although some parts edited out, this diary had become well known as a hopeful yet horrifying time for the Jews. The way Anne Frank wrote about her life made all the horrors of the Holocaust real. She was about 13-years-old when she went into hiding with 7 other people in the place they hid called the Secret Annex. Later, they were found and had an inescapable fate with the concentration camp. The concentration camps were full of revolting conditions; over-packed bunks, starvation, disease, overworking of prisoners, torture, and the scent of death always in the air. There were approximately 6 million Jews killed in this terrifying massacre from all around the world. In these next few statements, I’ll tell you more about the Holocaust, Concentration camps, Anne Frank’s Story, and her legacy she left behind.
In the book The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, there is an emotional and inspiring story about eight Jewish people hiding in a Secret Annex in Amsterdam, Holland, making an effort to survive in the harsh time period of the Holocaust. The time period and setting of this book is World War II and during the Holocaust. It is in 1942 through 1944, and in Amsterdam, Holland. The street name of this Secret Annex in the attic of the old office building of Otto Frank is Prinsengracht 263-267, 1016 GV. This influential play has the story about eight Jews going into hiding in the dreaded time of the Holocaust, and giving it all their will and strength to survive and get through the 1940s. The main characters of this book are Anne Frank and her family, the Van Pel Family, Fritz Pfeffer, Miep Gies, and Mr. Kraler. D-Day is an important event for these Jewish fellows, and it gave a lot of meaning to them. These Jews went through a lot of stress and mixed emotions. Anne says, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart” (Goodrich and Hackett 122). This quote shows the way that Anne can extract all of the bad in people and just see the good in people, even when they might be very notorious. D-Day gave these innocent Jewish members of the Annex a sense of hope and faith in these Allies to fight through German defenses to come rescue and save the Jews. Not only did D-Day give them hope and faith, but it also gave them a sense of safety and comfort each time the Allies get one step closer to aid.
Girl by Jamaica Kincaid demonstrate how a mother cautions her daughter, in becoming a responsible woman in her society. Although the daughter hasn’t gotten into adolescence yet, the mother fears that her daughter’s current behavior, if continued, will tip to a life of promiscuity. The mother believes that a woman’s status or propriety determines the quality of her life in the community. Hence, gender roles, must be carefully guarded to maintain a respectable front. Her advice centers on how to uphold responsibility. The mother cautions her daughter endlessly; emphasising on how much she wants her to realize her role in the society by acting like woman in order to be respected by the community and the world at large. Thus, Jamaica Kincaid’s
“When you're young you don't know anything, but you have lot of energy to express yourself. So you make a lot of mistakes and you stumble, but you also get a lot of truth from within.” Said Gilbert Hernandez. This idea shows when one is young it is necessary for that person to express their emotions to deal with any complications they might encounter. In the play, “Diary of Anne Frank" Anne is a teenager dealing with the challenges of the Holocaust. Due to this her family goes into hiding. Throughout their experience conflicts start to come up between Anne and the other residents. When facing these conflicts she turns to her father, a sixteen year old boy named Peter, and her diary. It is in this play that the author uses Anne Frank’s relationship with her father, Peter, and her diary to demonstrate the theme of expressing feelings can help cope one with societal challenges beyond someone’s control.

Through out the novel The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank there were many themes that were expressed. On theme includes, in the world there some evil individuals, but inside of most people there is a least a some good. To begin with, I choose this theme because of the evil groups during World War II that took away Jews. Some Germans during the war did not have any good in them. One group of the hateful people that worked for Hitler and were called the Gestapo's. They took away hundreds of Jews to camps. At the camps they were not separated by gender or age and everyone sleep together. As the text states, “...Jewish friends are being taken away by the dozen. These people are treated by the Gestapo without a shred of decency, being loaded
On June 12, 1929, at 7:30 AM, a baby girl was born in Frankfort, Germany. No one realized that this infant, who was Jewish, was destined to become one of the worlds most famous victims of World War II. Her name was Anne Frank. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, by Anne Frank and B.M. Mooyaart, was actually the real diary of Anne Frank. Anne was a girl who lived with her family during the time while the Nazis took power over Germany. Because they were Jewish, Otto, Edith, Margot, and Anne Frank immigrated to Holland in 1933. Hitler invaded Holland on May 10, 1940, a month before Anne?s eleventh birthday. In July 1942, Anne's family went into hiding in the Prinsengracht building. Anne and her family called it the 'Secret Annex'. Life there was not easy at all. They had to wake up at 6:45 every morning. Nobody could go outside, nor turn on lights at night. Anne mostly spent her time reading books, writing stories, and of course, making daily entries in her diary. She only kept her diary while hiding from the Nazis. This diary told the story of the excitement and horror in this young girl's life during the Holocaust. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl reveals the life of a young innocent girl who is forced into hiding from the Nazis because of her religion, Judaism. This book is very informing and enlightening. It introduces a time period of discrimination, unfair judgment, and power-crazed individuals, and with this, it shows the effect on the defenseless.
