Dialectical Journal For The Great Gatsby

1. In Chapter One, the symbolism of the green light drives the plot and sets the stage. The green light symbolizes Gatsby's one true desire. If he can just reach out. He will attain his dream. I Believe it will play a big part in the development of the story as their relationship flourishes.
2. He describes himself as "the only honest person" he knows. He is the moral center of the book, although he tends to be corrupted a bit by his neighbors' and Daisy's reckless and extravagant ways as the book progresses.
3. In Tom's first appearance in the story, Nick describes Tom as having "two shining arrogant eyes" which "established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward". Tom's physicality is seen,

by Nick, as brutal and cruel, as we see here. He even brings Nick along to watch. I think he gets this from the way he treats Daisy and what he mentions at the dinner table.
4. Jordan Baker is a wealthy and beautiful woman living in the East Egg section of Long Island. I believe that a relationship will bloom with the character Nick as the story goes along. Jordan Baker is also a competitive golfer who yawns as though bored by her surroundings.
5. The first time Nick sees Gatsby, Gatsby is seen watching over a body of water with his arms out. Nick admires this odd act. When Nick arrives home, he sees Gatsby for the first time, a handsome young man standing on the lawn with his arms reaching out toward the dark water. Nick looks out at the water, but all he can see is a distant green light that might mark the end of a dock.
6. The tone of Nick's description of Tom reveals that Nick is not very fond of Tom. For example, ''Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward.''
