Dexter is a crime drama that began airing on October 1, 2006, set in Miami. Dexter Morgan works in forensics, specializing in bloodstains for the Miami Metro Police Department. Dexter himself leads a double life as a vigilante serial killer, targeting other murderers who he views as not getting adequately punished by the justice system; the first season is taken from the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter, while the succeeding seasons go on different paths. As someone might expect, Dexter's journey is character-centric, where the titular character struggles with his identity. In one instance, he claims to lack feeling yet admits he finds spending time with Rita enjoyable, indicating he's not as thoughtless as he claims. "Lately, the thing that surprises me most about Rita is how much I enjoy being with her. But whenever that happens with a woman, and I feel comfortable with her, it all goes wrong." (Dexter, S1E2) Much of Rita's character was getting control over herself after the introduction of her controlling ex. "The only real question I have is why, in a building full of cops, all supposedly with a keen insight into the human soul, is Doakes the only one who gets the creeps from me?" (Dexter, S1E1) Doakes, a sergeant in the homicide department and my favorite character, acts as both a detective and supervisor at crime scenes.
