Dozens of ghost sightings have been reported at the unique outcropping of rock at the battlefield in Gettysburg, known as Devil’s Den. (Stephen 1) However, stories about ghost sightings and hauntings surrounded the area long before the battle was ever fought. But how it got its name remains a mystery. The reason for these sightings is thought to be from the battle that took place here in 1863.
The name Devil’s Den was used before the battle took place. Locals referred to the rocks as a “desolate and ghostly place” because of the high structure and deep, dark crevices. The legend says there was a large snake nick-named “The Devil” that the hunters were never able to kill or catch. (Taylor 1) The area of rocks was called the snake’s den. Therefore the area was called Devil’s Den. But that might not be the actually reason of the area being called Devil’s Den, no one actually knows. …show more content…

The barefoot ghost is known for his outfit which includes a floppy hat and khaki colored shirt, which is why people describe him as a ragtag unit from Texas who participated in the battle. Reports say the spirit is always saying “What you're looking for is over there.” This ghost has never been caught on camera because Devil’s Den causes electronic devices to glitch and shut off.
