Deviant And Abnormal Behavior Analysis

Deviant and abnormal behavior is defined as any behavior that goes against the social norms of society. When someone behaves differently than what is expected they may display deviant behavior. There are various ideas on what causes someone to take part in deviant and abnormal behavior, some of which include biological, psychological and sociological explanations ("What is deviant behavior," 2017).

One factor may be biological such as mental illness. Some classify those who are mentally ill as a deviant because mental illness is not normal. Scientists have thought that lesions on the brain may be a reason for some deviant behavior, however we also know that mental illness is also a genetic factor where the subject doesn’t always have a way

This behavior may be due to some type of trauma in one’s past. For example, when many think about PTSD, they associate it with war veterans. However, PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder can manifest itself several ways. It could be when a child is a victim of child abuse and then lashes out because of what has happened or is happening to them ("Psychological Theories of Deviance - Boundless Open Textbook", 2016), or it can be when a wife/husband is a victim of domestic violence and the long-term abuse causes the wife/husband to kill their spouse. Although this is two different spectrums of PTSD both are a factor in types of deviant behavior.

The third is the sociological factor, which deal with the economic and environmental pressures. On this level, it can lead someone to be a deviant because of poverty and other factors in their environment that cause some to steal (McMahon & Wallace, 2017). We see this type of behavior in mothers and fathers who do not have enough money for food or formula so they take items from a store for the sole purpose of helping their family.
