Leading up into class I was both bit nervous and excited, since this was the first time in years that I haven’t taken a class outside of my particular major. As I was going through the course schedule, I had in my mind that I did not just want to take any old class just because I need it to graduate. So I came across developmental psychology and thought to myself that this would be a good fit because I enjoy learning about other people. Once class started, I was a little confused of how it the class was going to be because I already had the thought in my head that I was going to be learning about people older in age, rather than learning about how babies develop before they are born. There are two ways that cause use to develop, these are by maturity and learning experiences. Now someone that observes development psychology is considered a developmentalist. Describing, explaining, and optimizing development are three major goals a developmentalist must pursue to fully understand how someone develops. Describing involves understanding patterns in change, they are normative development and ideographic development. Normative development is a typical pattern of change and ideographic is a variation in the patterns. The second goal is explaining, this is asking the question why people develop the way they do and why some people may develop differently. Optimizing is the third goal, which is the more hands on approach by applying what they have just learned and trying to help people develop into a positive direction. Survival reflexes are the basics like breathing or swallowing and primitive reflexes are more like stepping or swimming. Newborns also exhibit daily activities that are predictable and healthy for their development, this is call infant state. These can be anything from falling asleep during feeding or a baby moving quickly when wide awake. As an infant moves into childhood and a child moves into their adolescences you begin to see signs of physical growth, which effects their brain, body, motor skills, and sexual development. You will notice these changes by their height and weight, changes in body proportions, skeletal development, and their muscle development. An example of these changes would be a young teenage boy hitting puberty and hearing the change of deepness of his voice. This assignment will show the areas of development from conception to age sixteen years, the theories of development and consider how it influences practice. It will look at physical development, and communication and language development in the age ranges of birth to three years and three to seven years. Also included in this assignment will be the theoretical perspectives which relate to my chosen areas of development and the evaluation as to how they may influence practice which affects the development of children.
In this essay I intend to discuss two psychological theories of development; The psychodynamic approach and the behavioural approach. In order to do this, I will outline each theory and explain how it accounts for psychological development, health and behaviour of the individual. In addition to this, I will explain how an understanding of these theories relates to care and would help a care professional to support an individual in a care setting.
Developmental theories are broken up into two perspectives; Life-course, and Latent Trait. These perspectives may answer questions on why juveniles have grown to lead a destructive life-style and why others grow out of their delinquency. Latent trait explains that some tendencies we are may be born with and how important it is to be there for our children. Our parenting skills do have a profound effect on how our children may lack self control or have an impulsive behavior.

Recently when I get extremely overwhelmed or stressed I can relate what we learned in class to my experience and in a way it helps me get a better picture of what I’m dealing with and how I should approach the problem. It probably sounds silly and fake but this class has really helped me deal with difficult situations in a more effective way. Not only can I relate to the topic of stress personally but I can also relate to almost every topic we have gone over. I’ve learned a lot more from this class than I expected since the beginning of the semester and the material I’ve learned will definitely stay relevant to me even after I graduate. I am no longer a psychology minor, and I’m not sure what other psychology classes could have offered me but I am glad I choose this class and that at least one class I took as an undergraduate is actually going to be relevant to me outside of the

Child Development means so much more than that, it is also the term used to describe how children learn and grow as they age into adults. Physical development focuses on increasing the skill and performance of the body. The sequence of physical development involves firstly gross motor skills that require control of large muscles in the body, arms and legs. Gross motor skills are larger movements your baby makes with his/her arms, legs, feet, or his/her entire body. Physical and cognitive development are closely linked, especially during the early years. When most teens mature their frontal lobes continue to develop.
Child psychology, also known as child development, is the study of psychological growth of children; how these mechanisms develop from infancy to adolescence and why they deviate from one child to the next. Child development is associated with biological, psychological, and emotional diversity that occur in humans. Although there is a different advancement for each child, these developmental changes may be greatly determined by genetic factors and experience during prenatal life. The early years of a child’s life are very important for his or her health and development. Parents, health professionals, educators, and others can work together as partners to help children grow up to reach their full potential.
Human development has been a subject of interest since ancient Greece and Rome. Different approaches derive from two basic directions: the nativists` and empiricists` ones. The latter method is to regard human development as a gradual change which has been influenced by the individual`s experience .On the other hand, the former approach has found its roots in the biological structure of the human organism which considers our development as a series of stages. However, referring to human development only as continuous or gradual would produce inconsistent and insufficient understanding of the developmental process .As a result, combining ideas of both viewpoints(continuity and phases) will provide a more explicit of understanding of the developmental processes and their final aim which is to create individual`s integrity within the social norms.
I took this class because it aligns with other studies I have done. I have completed life coaching certificates and other psychology and mental classes. My expectations for this class are to learn what it means to educate and be educated. In life and business, I can see where understanding individual and/or group motivations can help show the bigger picture and give ideas on how to proceed.
As I personally take the time to have a reflection over the course of “Child and Adolescent Development” I find myself intrigued with the amount of knowledge I gained during this course this semester. I wanted to take the time to concentrate on three specific areas in which I felt I had the most growth, but also came as a challenge to me as well. It is important when reflecting over a course that I look at what I found to be challenging, as this was an opportunity of growth for me individually. In this paper I will review some of the main topics that I found to be interesting but also resourceful for my future aspiration not only as a family life educator but also a mother one day.
