Desiree’s Baby Critical Analysis Racism was a controversial topic back in the time period between the Revolutionary and Civil War. Black people had not been accepted into society and many people wrote books and articles about racism during the time period that the book was written in. In “Desiree’s Baby”, by Kate Chopin, the topic of race was shown and how it could change lives and society was revealed through the use of irony, similes, and imagery. One of the most ironic moments in the whole story was near the end of the story. In the story it stated that Armand, the father, made Desiree and the baby flee because he had discovered that the baby is black. The ironic part was in the letter written to Armand, “Armand will never know that his mother, who adores him, belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery” (108). One of the similes were, “‘Good-by, Armand,’ she moaned. He did not answer her. That was his last blow at fate” (107). The quote was written after Armand dismissed Desiree and his kid from his life. He concluded by sitting in complete silence in his study, and he had thought that God did an unjust act to him. Armand was so caught up in how his family was viewed by society that he destroyed his marriage, however, he had no idea that he was the problem in their relationship. When Desiree came to the realization that her baby was not white, her blood “turned like ice in her veins” (106). She recognized race was a massive issue and realized what kind of problem this could create, and she was right. Later, Armand told Desiree he wanted her to leave, and Desiree turned away from Armand “like one stunned by a blow.” She was stunned that he would make her leave because she did not assume she was the problem in their
