What is segregation? Have you ever thought about getting beat because of your race? Have you ever thought about your kids going through segregation? Why does it matter? After reading different articles about segregation tears came to my eyes. This description shows that segregation has enlarged dangerously from corner to corner in the country for students, who are existence more powerfully segregated. In spitefulness of waning housing segregation for black families and significant association to the suburbs in most parts of the state, school integration remains very elevated for black students. It is also binary segregation by mutually race and poor quality. All over the country, the classic black student is now in a discipline where almost two out of all the classmates are low-income, almost double the level in schools of the characteristic white or Asian student. In the essay “Still Separate, Still Unequal” by Jonathan Kozol, the situation of racial segregation is refurbished with the author’s beliefs that minorities (i.e. African Americans or Hispanics) are being placed in poor conditions while the Caucasian majority is obtaining mi32 the funding. Given this, the author speaks out on a personal viewpoint, coupled with self-gathered statistics, to present a heartfelt argument that statistics give credibility to. Jonathan Kozol is asking for a change in this harmful isolation of students, which would incorporate more funding towards these underdeveloped schools. This calling is directed towards his audience of individuals who are interested in the topic of public education (seeing that this selection is from one of his many novels that focus on education) as well as an understanding of the “Brown v. Board of Education” (1954) case, which ties in to many aspects of the author’s essay. With the application of exemplum, statistics, and emotional appeals, Jonathan Kozol presents a well developed argument.

Throughout the essay, Kozol proves evidence of the inequality that African American and Hispanic children face in the current school systems.

The efforts of desegregation have to be back in order and this means that more adults have to admit their children to schools irrespective of the ethnicity. So, what’s stopping them? A Guest Post in Colorado school grades, a coalition of 18 non-profit community organizations, written by Michael Petrilli, an award-winning writer, and president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, which talks about pros and cons of choosing a diverse school for children might give us an answer. Focusing on the cons, we have the first one which is the child might end up in a school that has less funding and resources which is true as emphasized in the article Desegregation Since the Coleman Report. The next reason was having to take small risks regarding safety and finally, the third being even if the classes were not separated by race, they would be separated by intellect which was again both of which were discussed in “A Crisis of Authority in Predominantly Black Schools?” I.E the concluding that American education system is directly or indirectly involved in the matters of segregation and playing a huge role in discrimination and education
African-Americans endured poor academic conditions throughout the entire United States, not just in the south. In Prince Edward County, Virginia, the segregated school had no nurse, lockers, gym or cafeteria. In Clarendon County, South Carolina, buses were not available to the African-American school, but were available to the white schools. In Wilmington, Delaware, no extra curricular activities or buses were offered to the African-American school. In Washington DC, the situation in segregated schools was the same as in the other states, but the textbooks were outdated. (Good, 21-34)
The words may be unspoken, but the message is loud and clear. Racial separatism is stronger now than ever before. According to Johnathan Kozals article "Still separate, still unequal"; segregation still exists in most schools across America. The main reason we know this to be true, is because it’s been recorded percentages of how many white students attending school with others of minority backgrounds, and the averages are extremely low. Even in areas, which are considered to be diverse communities, white parents believe their children’s level of education would decline if sending their kids to schools with others of different cultural characteristics. For instance, Kozal visited a neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, and learned that over half of that community was Caucasian, and was in the same district of Thurgood Marshall elementary school. This elementary school was very diverse with many ethnicities, but instead these Parents bussed their children to schools that were predominantly white. One of the teachers stated to Kozal that she would see clusters of white parent’s, walking their kids to the bus stop, which was only about a block from the school.
Despite what many may say Segregation is not always associated with a negative connotation. The New Book Of Knowledge defines segregation as the “separateness of two or more groups living within the same society.” However, Segregation could refer to the separation of salt and water. However, segregation can also be derogatory and racist. Throughout American History one would hardly have to search hard to find any civil rights movements that fought for the equality of races. Segregation was used as a way to make people of color seem inferior to whites and keep people of color from rising in an economic or social standpoint. Almost every person who has stepped foot in a college classroom has experienced ethnic diversity within the students in the room. This has not always been the case however. Up until 1954 blacks and whites attended different schools and weren’t allowed the same schooling opportunities. It took a young girl, Linda Brown, and her father, Oliver Brown, as well as many other courageous African American families to stand up to the old law of “separate but equal”, decided in the Plessy vs. Ferguson case in 1892, and fight for equal educational rights for whites and blacks. Even though the Supreme Court decided in favor of the Brown family in 1954, this did not mean that everyone was so eager to accept integration so readily. In fact, right away things hardly changed at all, especially at the higher levels of education. It took a man by the name of James Meredith, the first African American student at the University of Mississippi, to further expand what the Brown’s had started and further break the racial boundaries put around education. Presently school integration has greatly improved but there is still definitely room for improvement. Baldwin was accurate in describing his present day conditions of school segregation in that it was almost a joke and that no “progress” had been made but he was wrong to say that, “the sloppy and fatuous nature of American good will can never be relied upon to deal with hard problems” (Baldwin 336). It is American good will and unity that has brought all races together to improve integration in public schools and although there is still room for improvement everyone’s attitudes have shifted to make schooling improved for all students.
America’s school system and student population remains segregated, by race and class. The inequalities that exist in schools today result from more than just poorly managed schools; they reflect the racial and socioeconomic inequities of society as a whole. Most of the problems of schools boil down to either racism in and outside the school or financial disparity between wealthy and poor school districts. Because schools receive funding through local property taxes, low-income communities start at an economic disadvantage. Less funding means fewer resources, lower quality instruction and curricula, and little to no community involvement. Even when low-income schools manage to find adequate funding, the money doesn’t solve all the school’s problems. Most important, money cannot influence student, parent, teacher, and administrator perceptions of class and race. Nor can money improve test scores and make education relevant and practical in the lives of minority students.
In the final decades of the 20th century, education has continued to evolve in order to meet society's demands. The transformation of society has created numerous problems in the educational system. These problems consist of the segregation of races, religions, social classes, and politics. In the earlier part of the 20th century, African-Americans were segregated within schools. They were placed into lower-class school systems with little extra-curricular activities, limited resources, and lower quality teachers.
United States school systems have has a history of segregation. This segregation began with the passing of Jim Crow laws in the south in the late 1800’s. The influence of this practice was at first the slave culture of the southern states, and later was manifest as residential segregation and school choice programs. There were also many Supreme Court rulings which failed to overturn implement segregation which allowed for the practice to continue to flourish. Although we have seen social improvements in our society in the past 50 years we can still see that many citizens of the United States are still placed at a disadvantage due to their class and race. Today we can look back and oversee the changes and development in Education. Segregation throughout the education system has shaped the system to what it is today. Discrimination is the practice of preferential treatment, or denying equal treatment to someone due to his or her demographic characteristics. Racial discrimination and segregation has impacted the education system since 1865 up until present day. Not only did schools face racial segregation, but also sex segregation and social class status segregation. Education was a privilege to have and something that had to be earned by the people. Residential Segregation Today, there are many Americans that believe racism ended with Jim Crow laws being abolished. Many believe it ended when “Separate but Equal” was no longer legal, and most recently people point to former President Obama and believe race is no longer an issue in the United States of America. These people are wrong for so many reasons, but one of the biggest is that white Americans are segregating themselves from minorities. According to Bonilla-Silva and Embrick, only a few white Americans are integrated. Only four out of forty-one students have lived in a residential neighborhood with a significant black presence (Bonilla-Silva, Eduardo and Embrick, David).
Once a school system drops their efforts to integrate schools, the schools in low-income neighborhood are left to suffer; not to mention that segregation in schools leads, not only to the neglect of schools, but the neglect of students as well. Resegregation quite literally divides the public schools into two groups “the good schools”, that are well funded, and “the bad schools”, that receive a fraction of the benefits-- more often than not the groups are alternatively labeled as “the white schools” and “the black schools” (and/or hispanic). Opportunities for the neglected students diminish significantly without certain career specific qualifications that quality education can provide-- they can’t rise above the forces that are keeping them in their situation.
Segregation within our education is nothing new and is still prevalent today. Segregation was supposedly abolished but to end something like segregation, something that has been practiced in the educational system for as long as there have been different races, will take time. Legally, segregation has ended but the impact is still being felt today. But to understand the damage that has been done today, the history needs to be understood.
