Desdemona's naivety is the prime cause of the conflict in "Othello" because she doesn't know that Iago is depriving her in Othello's mind by using her actions against her. Desdemona loves Othello, but also is benevolent in helping anyone even if it might be practiced against her. Cassio asked Desdemona if she can help get Othello's trust back, only as Othello and Iago enters they see Cassio leave and gets a bit
suspicious.
In how many Shakespearean tragedies is there a noble hero will falls into an epileptic seizure – as we find in Othello? Let us consider some of the more abnormal occurrences in the drama.
When Iago first sets out to deceive Othello, he tells him, "look at your wife; observe her well with Cassio" (3.3.196). He knows that if he can plant enough doubt and jealousy in Othello's mind, Othello only needs to look at Desdemona being friendly with Cassio to suspect infidelity. After this, when Desdemona asks for Cassio's reinstatement, it looks as though she is trying to get something better for her lover, as opposed to just helping a friend.
All Iago had to do was hint at Desdemona being unfaithful and Othello’s becomes very bothered it and eventually starts believing it. The author of an essay does an analysis on Iago and says “He slowly poisons people’s thoughts, creating ideas in their heads without implicating himself. Iago even says himself that the advice he gives is free and honest and thus, people rarely stop to consider the possibility that Iago is fooling them.“ (Shakespeare’s Othello – Honest Iago). So Iago would hint at something going between Desdemona and Cassio so that Othello would become bothered and ask him what he means by that, it was like a game that Iago was playing, he would drop a little hint and then expect Othello to pick up on it and start questioning it and become more even suspicious. Brabantio tells Othello “Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see. She has deceived her father, and may thee” (I.ii.286-287), So In this scene Brabantio warns Othello that Desdemona has already fooled him and she might fool him too, so be careful, and it turns out, Othello believed in him after all and that’s part of the reason of why he thinks that Desdemona is being unfaithful to him. It leads him to start questioning Desdemona in a very suspicious way. At one point he even hits her in front of a nobleman and that was very shocking to the nobleman because he believed him to be a very calm and collected gentleman but obviously he was a changed man. The nobleman even expresses his shock by saying that “My lord, this would not be believed in Venice, though I should swear I saw’t. ‘Tis very much make her amends; she weeps” (IV .i.217-219). This negative thinking and insecurity was one of the main reasons to Othello’s change in a negative way. A lot of this was Iago’s doing but it was also Othello’s fault to fall for Iago’s
In William Shakespeare’s play ‘Othello’, he characterises Desdemona’s character to demonstrate her faithfulness towards Othello, so deeply that she endures her unjustifiable death in silence. Shakespeare weaves the theme of loyalty and lack of throughout his play to demonstrate the tragedy of Desdemona’s sincerity. Desdemona’s devoted loved for Othello had blinded her to willingly hand her soul into his hands. She saw Othello as a superior being to her, as she perceived him to be greater and most noble, degrading herself allowing him to take her last breath. In Shakespeare’s play he conveyed that by Desdemona behaving and obeying to societal norms she ultimately motivated Othello to doubt her resulting in her fatality.
In fact, Desdemona holds herself in such high regard that she almost seems incapable of believing that anyone else may not. Luckily for her, Othello similarly holds her in high regard, at least until Iago begins to manipulate him. Even before Othello, Desdemona’s own father, Brabantio, thought highly of her. When she elopes with Othello, he never believes that she ran away from home willingly. He believes that Othello had enchanted her until she herself says otherwise. Upon this realization, Brabantio, warns Othello against Desdemona, telling him:
Honesty is the key to a relationship. Without honesty and trust it is hard for any relationship to survive. Many people think they are honest but yet they only tell part of a story, which makes it a lie. Many people feel that by hiding things from their partner they are saving them from something that might hurt them. But by not telling the whole truth, they are causing their partner to have lost faith and trust and believe their partner to be dishonest. When doubt creeps in and faith is gone people begin to believe that their partner is doing things outside of their marriage. This is part of the problem between Othello and Desdemona and also Iago and Cassio. Cassio is the most honest person but because of that Iago does everything he can to make him look dishonest and cause Othello to mistrust him. In the play in act III, Cassio refers to Iago as honest yet he is the most dishonest of them all. He is using the trust people have in him to make it appear as though Cassio is having an affair with Desdemona. The problem between Othello and Desdemona is that when she goes to him on behalf of Cassio and tries to talk to him, she does it with such passion and belief, but yet because she does not tell him the whole truth and tell him why she is coming to Othello on Cassio's behalf he doubts her. Throughout the play there are partial stories and half-truths between them, which causes Othello to believe she is having an affair.
In Act three, Scene three, Desdemona agrees to speak to Othello in Cassio’s behalf) As Desdemona and Cassio discuss Cassio’s loss of rank and trust in Othello’s eyes. Iago brings to Othello’s attention the discussion taking place between Cassio and Desdemona. Iago knowing full well why the discussion is happening. Iago hints the pair seems to be spending a lot of time together. Iago plants the seed of doubt in Othello’s mind Othello begins to ponder the idea of whether Iago suspicions are true.
In Shakespeare’s play “Othello” the main characters Othello and Desdemona suffer a tragic fate due to their actions and unforeseen circumstances. A majority of Desdemona’s suffering is down to Iago’s manipulation. However, it could also be argued that Iago is not completely to blame for the misfortune of Desdemona. We as the readers can see evidence of this at certain points in the play where Iago has planted the seeds of despair and Desdemona and Othello have fallen for his plans. In this essay, I will look at key moments in the play where Desdemona is presented as a tragic victim by the writer and justify why she is a tragic victim using quotes from the play.
Iago as the Cause of the Tragedy of Othello and Desdemona or as the Catalyst
Once Iago has poisoned Othello’s mind with lies about an affair between Cassio and Desdemona, Othello becomes suspicious and distrusting of Desdemona. He is convinced that his wife is a whore, but never speaks to her about his suspicions. Othello refuses to confront Desdemona because, just as their society mandates, to him women are untrustworthy and decietful. Othello (and society) truly believes that if he asks her about Cassio, she will deny sleeping with him. Because Desdemona is a woman, she is not given a chance to speak on her own behalf. It is this same societal issue that played a part in her death. Othello the man and thus obviously stronger and more logical, suffocates Desdemona without hearing her side of the story first. The society in which they live gave Othello permission to kill Desdemona without her even really knowing why.
...or example when she asked him to tell her how much he loved her, “If it be love indeed, tell me how much”. Her maids add a little to Cleopatra’s characteristics. Also she had a messenger go to Antony saying she was dead, which she was not.Cleopatra’s character is so exotic and proud to be able to manipulate men but Desdemona is a complete opposite. Betrayal is the other ultimate theme of both of these tragedies. In Othello, he betrays Desdemona by believing the evil Iago and not communicating with his wife. He instead assumes Iago’s statements are of truth. We see Iago’s slyness and cleverness grow and a vapid rate, Desdemona’s innoncence becomes more apparent and Othello’s character galls from a noble warrior into a jealous fool. Iago is the source of the problems in Othello. He has motivation to ruin dear Othello because of the promotion Cassio gets instead of Iago.
Throughout the drama, Othello let Iago control him as if he was a puppet under his master’s hands. When Iago first brought up the idea that Desdemona and Cassio might be having an affair, Othello did not believe him, he had faith in his wife. After many lies that Iago planted in Othello’s ears, Othello started to believe him and he dropped most of the faith that he had in Desdemona. Iago told Othello that in his sleep, Cassio said “Sweet Desdemona, let us be wary, let us hide our love”. Cursed fate that gave thee the Moor” (III.iii.416-417).
First, the conflict she had with Brabantio gave Othello a second thought thinking how trustworthy Desdemona was. This was the major event that gave Iago’s plot the potential to be believable. Secondly, the more Desdemona tried to care for Othello the more he pushed her away. For example, Desdemona asks Othello “ Why do you speak so faintly?”
A romantic tale usually begins with the separation of two characters, and ends with the attachment of their love for each other. However, William Shakespeare’s Othello is a play that comprises of two dear couples, Othello and Desdemona, whom suffered an unfortunate fate by the false words of Iago, who seeks nothing but his own desires. Although, there were some notable deaths involved in this play, Iago isn’t accountable of Desdemona’s death, but rather it was Othello’s fault due to his foolish decisions and mindset.
Othello, a military man accustomed to regimented routines and practices, places a similar dictation on his married life. Even though he is happy in battle and leading his people, being with his wife is the place that he feels happiest. The combination of being a military man and being a lover were intertwined in Othello’s life, and once he started becoming less involved with the military, he started to feel less confident in his relationship with Desdemona. Once he found about this weakness in Othello, Iago planned an epic revenge by spreading lies about Desdemona’s unfaithfulness. After countess occasions of Iago bringing forth fake proof that Desdemona was having an affair, Othello starts going completely mad. In his madness, Othello confronts Desdemona about what has has happened between her and Cassio. Othello uses the “evidence” that Iago had given him, the handkerchief that he had once given her as a token of his love. He was told by Iago that Desdemona gave it to Cassio as a sign of her new love. She denies any accusations of this happening, because she wasn’t truly guilty of those actions. Even though Desdemona keeps stating she would never do anything like that to him, Othello is still crazy with jealousy and cannot take anymore of what he thought was her lies and smothers her to death. Shortly after, Emilia enters the room and demands to know what has
