Collins had returned after emptying his stomach and Jack seeing how badly seeing the sight in the stall had affected the young man decided to take pity on the constable. “Constable Collins, why don’t you go and locate the jockey registrar’s tent and inquire as to if any of the jockeys have yet to report in although I’m pretty sure that there will be at least one name. If so, ask for the name and who they are riding for.” Jack suggested seeing the constable was getting green around the nose. “Yes, sir.” Constable Collins turned and walked out of the stables faster than Jack had ever seen him walk. “Inspector Robinson?” a young constable approached looking at Jack. “Yes?” answered Jack. “Governor Somers and Police Commissioner Hawkes would like …show more content…
I am having a constable track down the name of the second victim.” Jack identified. He watched as the Governor and Police Commissioner ignore him as they have their own private conversation. “Sir, there is a possibility that there no links to the Cup at all. It would be unwise to do anything at this point.” Commissioner Hawkes breathed. “Yes, but if the deaths are related, we could have even more bodies piling up. It wouldn’t look too good if it was said that I let a killer roam about during the Cup. It might be better to cancel the Cup until the killer is caught.” Governor Somers whispered back. “Pardon me Governor, Police Commissioner, but based on what I have learned from my years in the constabulary if you cancel an event based on the fact of someone dying to prevent anymore killings, there is more of a likelihood that the killings will become erratic. However, if you are to continue the Cup as planned but had more constables strategically placed for security reasons then you will be more likely to prevent additional deaths. However not all together but enough to where you are able to catch the killer.” Jack interrupted, knowing he could likely be canned for such a comment. The governor and commissioner stopped and looked at the lowly Detective Inspector with …show more content…
We will allow the Cup to continue but you will have to conduct your murder investigation as quietly as possible. Use only men that you trust because I do not trust half of the men that are under me. Commissioner Hawkes, you have quite the inspector here. I wish you had more like them.” Governor Somers complimented. “He does solve his investigations in unique and unorthodox ways but he has managed to catch more criminals than other inspectors.” Commissioner Hawkes explained, which gave Jack the impression that he knew about his involving a woman detective in his cases. “Very well then. Inspector Robinson, you are allowed to use whatever means necessary to solve this case. Your actions nor the actions of your men will be questioned. Just remember to document everything whether it is orthodox or not so that we understand what was done; but do not give any inclination as to your position of freedom as it will reflect poorly on individuals higher than you, making you the likely scapegoat of the problem. Do you understand what I am saying?” suggested Governor Somers. “Yes, sir.” Jack admitted. The governor of Victoria was allowing Jack to use whatever means to solve the case which allowed him to bring Miss Fisher back onto the case, but Jack wasn’t exactly keen on Phryne participating in an investigation that she had to
On June 7th 2008, Sarah May Ward was arrested for the murder of Eli Westlake after she ran him over in a motor vehicle in St. Leonards. After a brief confrontation between the two parties the victim and his brother turned away and proceeded to walk down Lithgow Street. The offender followed the victim into the street and drove into him while he was crossing a driveway.
Because police investigators are usually under pressure to arrest criminals and safeguard the community, they often make mistakes. Sometimes, detectives become convinced of a suspect 's guilt because of their criminal history or weak speculations. Once they are convinced, they are less likely to consider alternative possibilities. They overlook some important exculpatory evidence, make weak speculations and look only for links that connect a suspect to a crime, especially if the suspect has a previous criminal record. Picking Cotton provides an understanding of some common errors of the police investigation process. During Ronald Cottons interrogation, the detectives did not bother to record the conversation “But I noticed he wasn 't recording the conversation, so I felt that he could be writing anything down”(79) unlike they did for Jennifer. They had already labelled Ronald Cotton as the perpetrator and they told him during the interrogation “Cotton, Jennifer Thompson already identified you. We know it was you”(82). Jenifer Thompson 's testimony along with Ronald Cotton 's past criminal records gave the detectives more reason to believe Ronald committed the crime. Ronald Cotton stated “ This cop Sully, though, he had already decided I was guilty.”(84). Many investigative process have shortcomings and are breached because the officials in charge make

In Walt Harrington’s True Detective, the article centers on the character Victor Smith, better known as V.I., who is a detective who investigates cases of homicide. This article was effective in allowing the readers to understand the perspective of a homicide detective and the many cases they undergo. However, it was difficult to find a connection with this article, because I have no experience with homicide or murder cases apart from what I have seen from the media and TV shows. I was still able to enjoy True Detective, as it described the daily lives of the detectives from Homicide North.

Officer Ryan’s perception of the situation at hand was one that led to an escalation. He pulled over Mr. and Mrs. Thayer though his partner warned him they did nothing wrong. His response was simply, “they were doing something.” Officer Ryan’s initial perception of Mrs. Thayer was incorrect, as he perceived her to be a white woman that was engaging in fellatio with a black man. Once Officer Ryan engaged in a conversation with Mr. Thayer and noticed how lightly he and his wife were taking the current situation, he became aggravated and asked Mr. Thayer to step out of the vehicle to perform a sobriety test.

After the murder of Wellington, Mrs. Shears’s dog, and being accused of having killed the dog, Christopher was determined to find out who had committed this crime. For this, he drew a simple map of neighbors’ houses and knocked house to house to find out who had killed the dog. The last house he went to was Mrs. Alexander’s house. She was gardening when he arrived and asked her information on the murder. She was aware of what had happened and knew more information than Christopher thought, but she did not tell him anything at this point, instead, she offered him tea and biscuits. As she went inside to grab the food, he left. His thoughts before leaving were that “she was inside the house for more than 6 minutes and I began to get nervous because I didn’t know what she was doing in the house. [...] And I thought she might be ringing the police and that I’d get into so much more trouble because of the caution” (Haddon 41). He aims at the decision to leave based on his intuition and distrust in people even though he had no rationale for that because Mrs. Alexander was a kind elder that lived on his street and the police knew he was not the dog’s murderer. His thoughts show how nervous he becomes when he experiences social interaction,

Crime will always surround us, but it often avoids the attention of monitoring systems which are established to measure the amount of crime and its victims (Skogan, 1977). There is truth in the fact that many crimes are not reported to the police, while other crimes are reported but never recorded. There are many reasons as to why this occurs. Firstly, the phrase “The dark figure of crime” is a concept used by criminologists and sociologists alike. It is a concept used to describe the crimes that remain undiscovered, unrecorded or unreported. It is believed that there is no complete way of identifying how much crime is actually out there, therefore, there is always questionability and doubt in regards to crime statistics as they cannot ever be accurately represented. (Skogan, 1977) This essay will aim to explain some of these reasons why not ally crimes are reported or registered.

Classical Criminology is credited with initiating the shift away from rather barbaric forms of torture. In classical criminology, the naturalistic approach of social thinkers had challenged the way of the spiritualistic approach. During this time, the spiritualistic approach was the base for all policies in Europe. This means that every crime had as spiritual meaning for which it was committed. St. Thomas Aquinas, a contributor to the topic, argued that people had a natural tendency to be good rather than evil. He also argued that because they committed a crime it did not just hurt other, it would hurt them.

Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” is known as the first work of detective fiction. According to Stephanie Craighill, Poe’s story, written in 1841, established a formula and themes for later detective fiction. After watching the True Detective pilot and comparing brilliant detective Cohle and Hart to Poe’s Dupin and unnamed narrator, it’s evident that these themes are still prevalent in modern detective fiction. Hence, through the inclusion of an analytical detective, incompetent and judgmental police, and intellectually inferior sidekick figures used to display the brilliance of the classical detective, True Detective and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” share similar narrative techniques, proving how the parameters Poe created
Michael Sanders, a Professor at Harvard University, gave a lecture titled “Justice: What’s The Right Thing To Do? The Moral Side of Murder” to nearly a thousand student’s in attendance. The lecture touched on two contrasting philosophies of morality. The first philosophy of morality discussed in the lecture is called Consequentialism. This is the view that "the consequences of one 's conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of that conduct.” (Consequentialism) This type of moral thinking became known as utilitarianism and was formulated by Jeremy Bentham who basically argues that the most moral thing to do is to bring the greatest amount of happiness to the greatest number of people possible.
