One sizzling summer day, spent at my good friend’s home, I found myself playing a wakeboarding game on the Wii. I was 14 years old and seeing the imaginary figures fly onto the other side of the wake intrigued me beyond belief. As I played game after game, I decided that I wanted to have my share of flight time on the water. I went home that day and immediately asked my mom if I could give it a whirl. Naturally, she was questionable at first as any mother would be when their action seeking son comes up with a “new idea”. After some research and constant persistence, I got the chance to learn from one of her cousins who has been practicing the sport for years. If you completely understand what wakeboarding is, think of it as a mix of snowboarding …show more content…
My family and I took our boat out to lake Avalon, a small, gorgeous, crystal-clear, spring fed lake that gets up to 136 feet deep lake, in Hillman, Michigan, about a half hour from my house. We met my mom’s cousin, Luke, and I quickly learned that wakeboarding was not all it was cut out to be. Just getting up out of the water proved to be a tremendous challenge for me. I tried the entire day to get up out of the water, my dad pulling upwards of twenty times until my moment arrived. Luke told me from the beginning that I would get up without a doubt, at the time I was a very light kid and the board would just pop me right out of the water. I finally realized how to transfer my weight to my back leg and resist the boat’s pull enough to get up out of the water. Of course, my show boat self tried to do an arm pump out of pure happiness and found my pride diminished by a little wave knocking me into the water after staying up for just 20 yards. But I didn’t stop …show more content…
This has been a slower process because it’s a more advanced part of wakeboarding. You really have to trust yourself and realize that you can resist the boats power. The first time I ever jumped the wake I was so shocked that I didn’t even know what happened. I turned out of the wake so that when I would cut back in I could get enough speed going to get out of the water. As I approached the wake I bent my knees, pulled the rope close to my body, and jumped. Flying a whole foot and a half into the air I landed right in the middle of the wake, a small jump but a tremendous achievement for me. I again did my arm pump but this time learned how to use my balance to stay above the water. Wakeboarding has become one of my favorite hobbies, If I never would have played that Wii game, I wouldn’t be able to write this paper about something that I have so quickly fallen in love
Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased greatly. It has gone from non existence in the late 1970’s, to one of the most watched action sports in a matter of thirty-five years. The upward takeoff and popularity of snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back in 1977 had the vision for what snowboarding would be, but Shaun White had what it took to manifest that vision. Evidence has shown that time brings change in sports, history has repeated itself with snowboarding, this history reflects the time & changes that has occurred in America.
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would
Snowboarding and Skiing are common and different in the subjects of culture, technique, and equipment. There are similarities on and off the mountain as well as major differences. Snowboarding was influenced in the beginning by skiing and it is now growing rapidly. Skiing has been taking part in the boarding culture to regain some ground hey lost to the boarding craze. This culture will be shown through a comparison in a “Battle of the Mountain.”
Interestingly enough, snowboarding was invented by Sherman Poppen in North Muskegon, Michigan, back in 1965. Nowadays, snowboarding is considered one of the most popular winter sports among teenagers. On the other hand, there are many people that don’t have the slightest idea how to ride a snowboard straight down a hill. There are four steps to learn the basic skills of snowboarding.
Wakeboarding is a water sport in which a rider holds onto a rope attached to a moving boat and is able to surf, jump, and twist along the water. Wakeboarding can be very challenging as a beginner, but once mastered it can also be a very exhilarating experience. Although it may look easy as a spectator, wakeboarding is not a walk in the park, and many beginners experience anxiety while first learning the sport. However, people can overcome this fear through determination and instruction from an experienced wakeboarder.
Surfing has come a long way since it was first conceived (roughly 1500 years ago). From the Polynesian “watermen” and Hawaiian Kings, to the European takeover in Hawaii and surfing's American debut in the early twentieth century and all the way through present day, surfing has had a rich history. Over the decades, surfing has fit in to a number of roles in society, but whether we surfers are seen as beach-bums or heroes (as of late), we still surf only because we love it, because the ocean’s calls us, because nothing else on this planet can create the sensation felt by riding a wave.
A few winters ago, some friends invited my family and me to go snow skiing at Paoli Peaks, Indiana. I did not know how to snow ski, and I leaped at the thought of trying this new sport. On the first morning we entered the pro shop to rent all the gear and make decisions about whether or not to take lessons or go it alone. We decided to be adventurous and go it alone—no lessons. Kent and Celeste, the friends who invited us, knew how to ski and snowboard. He assured us that he could show us the basics, and we would be on our way down the slopes. All of us, after a few minutes learning how to wedge our skis started down the family trail. Although the family trail had smaller hills and appeared safe, to me it seemed way
Pieter and I were determined to become proficient water skiers, while Rhea had knee issues that limited her participation. The Gibson Girl only had a forty horsepower motor, which wasn’t sufficient power for faster skiing or for doing tricks like skiing barefoot. I remember using the Comfort for some of our skiing before Dad traded the outboard for a sixteen-foot Gar Wood Junior, which had an inboard motor and more power. Pieter and I spent hours practicing the basics of getting up efficiently, skiing across the wake and then jumping the wake. It wasn’t long before we developed a passion for mastering slalom skiing. I wanted to ski all the time during that period.
Longboards are very popular nowadays. When you learn how to ride a longboard you will feel free. Once a girl learned how to ride a longboard, so she thought she can do any cool moves or/and going down huge and dangerous hills without any protection. Almost everyday she went out with her little sister longboarding.everywhere she was riding she was like a pro, walking back and forth on the board and making herself the spotlight also showing off in front of her little sister. Sometimes showing off can have a big minus because what if you mess up and get badly hurt.
The freezing wind had chilled my hand to the bone. Even as I walked into my cabin, I shivered as if there was an invisible man shaking me. My ears, fingers, toes, and noes had turned into a pale purple, only starting to change color once I had made a fire and bundled myself in blankets like ancient Egyptians would do to their deceased Pharaohs. The once powdered snow on my head had solidified into a thin layer of ice. I changed out of the soaking wet clothes I was wearing and put on new dry ones. With each layer I became more excited to go out and start snowboarding. I headed for the lift with my board and my hand. Each step was a struggle with the thick suit of snow gear I was armored in.
The tiles were still dirty from the residue of chlorine and pittle combined into one thick layer of impossible gunk. This gunk surrounded the edge of pool right where the water met the lowest part of the tile and was even apparent underneath the shallow water fountain around the back end. The ring had been worn away in spots where the missus had got so fed up that she was gonna put an end to this "ring of filth" once and for all. A few times she had started, but had always found a broken nail or straying hair to become spontaneously obsessive about when her arm got tired of scrubbing.
Skateboarding is a sport, an art form, and a lifestyle. On an ordinary day, a skateboarder picks up their friends and drive to their favorite spots to try new moves. They cheer themselves on while they subject themselves to much physical activity and discipline all in a day’s work. It is a sport with no pressure to do better than anyone else; there are no winners or losers. You skate until you’re exhausted and go to bed early only to repeat the process the following morning. Skateboarding is one of the best hobby’s anyone can have. Everyone should learn how to do it because it has exceptional health benefits and it will help people build character while simultaneously meeting incredible people.
When I was 5 years old, Dad woke me up one morning and informed me that he was finally going to teach me how to surf. I was ecstatic. I used to watch my brothers in envy as I crouched on the damp sand with my head between my hands resting on my knees, sulking at the fact that I wasn’t allowed to surf until I was 5.
Thinking of surfing brought me to think about my brother who is a surfer. I reminisced about the times he and I had sat quietly in the ocean waiting to see that perfect bump in the horizon. He taught me a great lesson in surfing; you don’t always have to pick the first option because there are more opportunities to
Sailing has been around for millennia, and is considered to be one of the earliest and most environmentally friendly methods of water transport. Sailboats act as a method of transportation, exercise, and entertainment. These now more structurally developed and masterfully modeled ships have been engineered for efficiency, and these advancements have ensured durability and speed among modern sailboats. The great strength and ability of sailboats has given competitive owners the opportunity to participate in races, but generally sailboats have come to exist as more of a relaxed hobby. The expensive activity of sailing is demanding both physically and mentally, as it tests anticipative abilities and endurance. To understand the physics concepts at work in a sailboat is immensely advantageous, as it can generally improve one’s performance.
