It 's my wedding day, and I 've overslept. There 's no time for primping, or even showering. I roll on deodorant, throw my gown over my head and run to the church. When I arrive, my dress is speckled with mud. The organist has settled in the choir loft; the guests are nestled in their pews. The photographer must have overslept, too, because my dad is pressing a distant relative with a disposable camera into service. I refuse to accept the gravity of the situation, opting instead to repeat the refrain that has soothed me countless times over these seven months of planning: "Everything will be just fine." I peer down the aisle. Two-hundred guests stare back, rubbernecking as if they were witnesses to a 10-car pileup on the interstate. There is …show more content…
But that was then. Everything changes when you move from the conditional tense -- "If I were to get married I would not wear a fluffy white dress" to the real-world present tense -- "I am getting married, so let me wear a fluffy white dress." When the ring is on, and you 're surrounded by misty-eyed family members uncorking champagne, a five-piece band and three-tiered cake makes all the sense in the world. You don 't want to keep this happiness restricted to the two of you. The Olympic planning committee must be involved. So you swallow the myth that "This is Your Day," and you embrace the idea of becoming fluent in cakespeak. You assure yourself that you will be wiser than the brides who have aisle-walked before you. But in no time your hope chest is replaced with a hard-reality chest. The all-consuming Bridal Tide sweeps you away to the sea of minutiae. Love and Other Catastrophes Most days, it 's not " Till death do us part" that freaks me out. It 's the little stuff. Should my veil extend to my fingertips, my shoulders or some point in between? What are the advantages of a 6-year-old flower girl carrying a nosegay instead of a …show more content…
When I slam the dressing room door on her hand, I am sure she realizes it was a mistake. I didn 't know dressing room protocol around these parts calls for a saleswoman to put the gown on you. By dress No. 10, I 'm expert at this drill: Head up, arms down and turn to the mirror. By No. 20, I have mastered the more-is-less rule: The more faux-pearl sprigs and jazz-recital sequins adorning the gown, the cheaper the gown. A simple dress costs more than a mortgage. By the time I choose my dress, I have tried on 30. At the first fitting, as I stare down my bridal reflection in the mirror, the reality of the situation overwhelms me: 200 guests and a 150-foot aisle. The blood drains from my face. I feebly mutter apologies to the seamstress as I falter off the pedestal and crumble to the floor, a life-sized mushroom of satin silk organza. "I hope I didn 't wrinkle the dress. I was about to faint." She sighs. "You brides really have to eat more." I Do, after all It 's lunchtime, and I 'm complaining about wedding plans to one of my brothers-in-law. He and my sister have been married a decade. Since that time I 've rarely heard him wax sentimental. Just as I am about to bemoan the state of veils in the '90s, he does just that. "You know
It was close upon four before the door opened, and a drunken-looking groom, ill-kempt and side-whiskered with an inflamed face and disreputable clothes, walked into the room. Accustomed as I was to my friend’s amazing powers in the use of disguises, I had to look th...
To be honest, I did try to memorize this speech, but forgive me if I resort to my notes every five seconds. I asked for an autocue to be set up in front of me. Apparently, the wedding budget doesn't str...
Now I was a bit unsure about the duties of a best man, although I told Brian very early on that there was no way I was going to get off with a bridesmaid – I say that with no offence intended to Claire and Nicola who I’m sure you’ll all agree look lovely, and have done a great job today. So to find out what was expected of me, I turned to the internet and managed to find some really interesting stuff… but then remembered what I had gone onto it for in the first place, and set about plagiarising other people’s speeches from all the wedding sites I could find. So I accept no responsibility if this end result is rubbish. I know many of you will have been to a few weddings in your time, so can I suggest that you entertain yourselves quietly by playing wedding bingo – every time you hear a witty comment in my speech that you have already heard at another wedding, give yourself a point and the first one to five wins a piece of wedding cake.
Before I ask you to join me in a toast to the bride and groom. I'd like to bore you with a few words. I will try to keep them short. as I know that the other speakers are really looking forward to standing here before you and making their speeches!
“I once attended a wedding and met a young fellow sort of like you,” where was he going with this, “he had a good life but died young, I could see that something deep inside of him was bothering him.” I told him “No, my love's too strong for Fatima and I must pursue my wedding.” Then I told him“Thank you for that advice but please, don't speak of this again, he said “Ok, congratulations on the marriage, I wish the best of luck to you.” I felt something in my pocket, no it couldn't be, it was my omens. I walked outside and it was almost time for the marriage ceremony, I felt so happy that situation was dealt with and I wanted to see my wife in her beautiful dress more than I wanted a another glass of water.
Therefore they couples had to put the rings on in the middle of the reception. This is just a fraction of the things that didn’t go as predicted. Luckily, I was inspired by it.
There was once a young girl with hair black as night and skin white as porcelain. She stared at her reflection taking in her extravagant white dress and the long veil trailing behind her. It is her wedding day and she is off to take her wedding photos. This is supposed to be the happiest day of her life and yet she cannot help but flinch as she takes hold of her soon to be husbands arm. She glances up at her indifferent finance and directs a forced smile at the photographer's camera.
“Couples today have much higher expectations. Between the 1950s and the 1970s American attitudes toward marriage changed dramatically as part of what has been called the “psychological revolution”—a transformation in the way people look at marriage, parenthood, and their lives in general.” (Skolnick p.171) At first blush, marriage in America seems to have followed a similar course. Once a required rite of passage, seen as a genuine embodiment of shared values, it now serves as a game-show prize on Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire or a booby prize on My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé — even though wedding ceremonies have created a "bridal-industrial complex," as Lee professor of economics Claudia Goldin calls the nearly $100-billion-a-year U.S. industry that outpaces even the movie business ($45 billion a year, including sales and rentals). (Hodder, 2004) Motivated by celebrity magazines and wedding planners, couples take on increasingly elaborate spectacles that take years to plan and cost on average $20,000 to produce.
Keep an eye out for these telltale signs of becoming a bridezilla. Taking wedding preparations to the extreme and micromanaging your nuptials is not the best way to start your life with the person you love. When it comes to weddings, every woman wants to have her dream day, but it’s important to remember that all you really need is the person you love, family and

Finally after what seemed like years, I walked out to greet my new father-in-law and my new wife. I shook his hands as he gave away his youngest daughter to start our own family, and then I reached out for the arm of my bride. Together we walked the rest of the way down the aisle and stood in front of the pastor’s
The perfect match to this family heirloom is a romantic Victorian wedding. Red roses, flowing gowns, and candlelit celebrations immediately fill a bride's imagination so intensely, there have been stories of women forgetting to actually say "Yes!" After a flurry of excited phone calls to the family, it's time for the bride to begin planning her Victorian wedding! Now that the antique engagement ring has set the tone of the celebration, every detail will be carefully thought out by the new bride. Her gown will echo the patterns etched into her antique engagement ring so long ago, adding to the charm and tradition of her Victorian wedding celebration. Each flower she chooses will capture the significance of the day in their meaning, an old-fashioned tradition but especially important for the hopeless romantic. The featured flower will be the red rose, of course, as it signifies everlasting love and all that is beautiful. Just before the ceremony begins, the lights will dim allowing the candlelit pews to illuminate the isle, sprinkled with dried rose petals. The dried rose petals will signify the path that has led the couple to this moment and the fresh roses in her bouquet and on his lapel will signify the path that they will follow together from this moment into the future. The guests' ears will be filled with classical music during a garden cocktail hour where guests may enjoy fragrant flowers, majestic views, hors'doerves and cocktails. This relaxing precursor will aptly set the mood for the brides' candlelit dinner and first dance with her new husband. Once the guests have been seated, the band will announce the newlyweds, bridesmaids and groomsmen with joyous jazz music. The piece will flow seamlessly into a song chosen for their first dance as husband
The need to be the best is seen greatly in our society. There are shows on television that have couples compete against each other to see who has the best dress, venue, food, and overall experience. One of these most popular shows is, Four Weddings. The winner of this show gets an amazing honeymoon. The brides attend each others weddings and judge them very harshly. They seem to judge each other very low to increase their chances of winning. This is an example of how weddings are used as a source of competition between
