When a community comes together, the nature of the relationship extends far beyond its physical component alone. This connection deals with the mental and emotional congruences as well. Lakeville Park does an optimal job of establishing this association within its community. Lakeville Park, located in the small city of Lakeville, Minnesota, consolidates all inhabitants of its community by providing a popular, yet simple place for neighbors to meet. Even though this park consists only of a few benches, a couple of picnic tables, and an abundance of open, green space, it epitomizes much more. Lakeville Park serves as a safe haven where people can postpone reality. The atmosphere includes no worries, concerns, or stress; only jubilation and relaxation exist. As laughter and shrieks of joy cascade from children's mouths, puppies playfully whine and scamper through the lush, freshly-cut grass. Majestic robins serenade one another with lovely songs beautiful enough to bring the grouchiest of men to a gentle slumber. A genuine sense of happiness permeates the air. The immense smiles on everyone’s faces stretch as wide as the sky; their brightness radiates the entire park. Parents mingle with one another from the benches on which they sit. Each blemish on the benches signifies a memory, specific to an occurrence caused by a member of the community. Every mark and scratch holds its own, individual story and background. All through the times of the intense expectation, overwhelming sadness, and inspiring hope in this novel comes a feeling of relief in knowing that this family will make it through the wearisome times with triumph in their faces. The relationships that the mother shares with her children and parents are what save her from despair and ruin, and these relationships are the key to any and all families emerging from the depths of darkness into the fresh air of hope and happiness.
History has shown us that in order for a society to flourish there must be some commonality within the society. Sharing similar values, interests and cultures may be the basis for forming a community. The true test of a society is when communities can comprise, merging together as a larger, stronger, united society. For this process to even begin, there must be a common factor, be it foe, economic reasons, etc., a common goal amongst the communities. A prime example is the creation of a united American society. To truly appreciate the complexity of forming a united society you must first understand why these groups of people came to this strange new land. What similarities they shared, the differences which divided them and the force which unified them.
A community separates themselves from other individuals in a given society. Certain communities carry their own separate rules or laws. It combines a number of people into one group, one way of thinking. Many communities come together because they share the same common goal or interests. On may occasions, a group or community forms when someone is different from the majority. A good example of that would be when a child is being teased in school because he has glasses or braces. Toni morrison's Sula is a story about a woman whose individuality brought a little town in Ohio together to side with each other against her.
In his book The Community of Those Who Have Nothing in Common, Alphonso Lingis (1994) discusses community and proposes an untraditional view of community, the “other community”. Traditionally community is known as a social structure in which individuals have something in common. This usually refers to a shared location, shared identity or common values or beliefs. In this traditional view or “rational community” these commonalities are crucial in uniting individuals.

On September 9th, 2017 at approximately 7 p.m., I went to Gracedale Public Park to carefully conduct my observation on the individuals, who were at the park and their specific activities in the one hour of time. When I got there, the weather was beautiful with soft winds, a clear sky and with some dim sunlight. The park was full of people of all ages. Though, there were more kids than adults and some teenagers. There were many bicycles and strollers parked beside the tree I sat under. After a couple of minutes, the park filled up with more and more individuals and everyone seemed busy doing their own actions.
When you think about New York, you think about Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, or The Empire State Building, however most people are blind to other attractions going on all the time. Since I am from the wonderful state of New York, I can fill you in on other attractions. New York City is way more than just a big, blooming, business city. Let me help you, by getting that sky scrapper image out of your head, and inform you on one of the oldest, most beautiful places to visit, containing plenty of attractions for one to do.
A cigarette butt lies next to my foot, still emitting a trace of smoke. Nearby on the dusty asphalt a pigeon waddles self-consciously, bobbing its head as if pecking the air for some invisible food. A squirrel churrs a threat to his brother, challenging him to romp.
Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
It has four distinct narrative voices, which are highlighted by each voice having a specific font. All of the children and their parents are given apparently simple voices. However, their voices in fact are extremely complex. Each voice explores each of the character's different feelings and traits. The most essential part of this story are the illustrations which are postmodern and surreal ones. In the illustrations the landscape are distorted, and the adults and children are portrayed like themes. The illustrations change to reflect the characters' attitude and the font of the text changes with each character to mirror to some degree their social status. The father and daughter, who are obviously from a poorer area, have slanted, messy, somewhat obtrusive text. The shades of color in the different characters' illustrations give a heavy impression. It surprises from the mother's standpoint, where everything seems to be regular and mundane. Nevertheless, once it shifts to the father's standpoint, the pictures become dark, dull, dirty, and more expressive. The little girl's viewpoint was very bright and animated, while in the little boy's viewpoint everything appeared bigger than him or distant. As for the picture in which the boy and girl were sitting on the bench, separated by the lamp post, in reality mirrors the way by which the two children perceive the world. As for the boy the world is dark and isolated, while the girl on the other hand perceive the world as a bright, happy place. the illustrations in Voices in the Park stimulate the readers to think deeply and to wonder about the contained details. For instance the fact that the father in the second voice has human hands, however he has not a human face challenges the reader to ask questions and to resolve the meaning of the story. A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived on a street or in an area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and grow up together, again sharing similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities.
I awoke to the sun piercing through the screen of my tent while stretching my arms out wide to nudge my friend Alicia to wake up. “Finally!” I said to Alicia, the countdown is over. As I unzip the screen door and we climb out of our tent, I’m embraced with the aroma of campfire burritos that Alicia’s mom Nancy was preparing for us on her gargantuan skillet. While we wait for our breakfast to be finished, me and Alicia, as we do every morning, head to the front convenient store for our morning french vanilla cappuccino. On our walk back to the campsite we always take a short stroll along the lake shore to admire the incandescent sun as it shines over the gleaming dark blue water. The Role of Community in Society Communities are an essential part of our society, because we all depend and interact with each other. Communities are groups of people that help an individual to learn and develop new ideas. A society is where people’s relations with each other are direct and personal and where a complex web of ties link people in mutual bonds of emotion and obligation. The idea of community has provided a model to contrast to the emergence of more modern less personal societies where cultural, economic and technological transformations have uprooted tradition and where complexity has created a less personal and more rationalized and goal directed social life.
