The artist’s Kara Walker was born 1969, in Stockton, California. Her influence to draw came from the stories she would hear about slavery, they were “rich and epic…and titillating” so, she start making art about slavery society and culture. Her techniques used in silhouettes, paintings, drawings, and landscapes were watercolors, adhesive, cut paper, paint, chalk, ink, gouache, and a projector. The visual aspects of her artwork include curve lines, positive shapes, dark hue, light hue, implied lines, negative shapes, a light balance, hatching, smooth texture, complementary colors, and a life size scale. The drawings, black figures, and painting techniques of Kara Walker symbolize the abuse and negligence of African Americans when they were brought by the British colonies in 1619. Her hair is nappy and slightly covered in a bandanna. One of her hands are pointing to a small child eating a large bone. The connection between the woman and the young child, is the burden of the elder carrying a white child will soon be the burden for the young child. Also, the woman lips are huge and chewing a straw. The chewing of the straw considers the elder being frustrated and impatient with the child riding on her back. Her technique used is adhesive on the wall, black cut paper, and a projection. The background of the silhouettes exhibit has warm colors, and trees arching along the path to the unknown. Her visual elements are circles, straight thin lines, curved lines, triangles, and positive shapes. Walker identify her pieces as “making depth” the illusion of the audience standing there seeing their own shadow bouncing off a wall by the light of the projectors. Herschel walker was born in March 3 1962 in Wrightsville Georgia. Herschel was one of the seven children his mother and father. Herschel mother Christine Walker called him the runt of the family because he was least athletic of his brother and sisters. As a child he was overweight and had a speech impediment Walker's mother taught him not to use these problems as excuses in life.
The Emancipation of the once enslaved African American was the first stepping stone to the America that we know of today. Emancipation did not, however automatically equate to equality, as many will read from the awe-inspiring novel Passing Strange written by the talented Martha Sandweiss. The book gives us, at first glance, a seemingly tall tale of love, deception, and social importance that color played into the lives of all Americans post-emancipation. The ambiguity that King, the protagonist, so elegantly played into his daily life is unraveled, allowing a backstage view of the very paradox that was Charles King’s life.

The poem also depicts the defiance of women against how she has been treated. She identifies man as the one that kisses away himself piece by piece till the last coin is spent. However, she cannot change the reality of her location, and temporal placement.

The painting has an order and there are different shapes and angles. Rectangular shape is main trend around this piece, including the wooden chest, the leg rest and the canvass. Also things overlap, creating the illusion of the shape look closer to viewer than the shape behind it. The example in this piece would be the chair on which Adelaide Labille Guiard sits be close to viewer than the girls behind it. This adds depth to the space. Also due to linear perspective girls behind the chair are smaller due to being farther away.
Kara Walker’s piece titled Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred b 'tween the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart represents discrimination on basis of race that happened during the period of slavery. The medium Walker specializes in using paper in her artwork. This piece is currently exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art. Even though this artwork depicts slavery, discrimination is still an issue today in America, the country where people are supposedly free and equal. Even though slavery ended in the 19th century, we still see hints of racial discrimination for African Americans in our society. Art could be displayed in many different forms; through photography, zines, poetry, or even a scrapbook. There are many inspirational women artists throughout history, including famous women artists such Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’Keeffe. When searching for famous female artists that stood out to me, I found Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger. Two very contrasting type of artists, though both extremely artistic. Both of these artists are known to be feminists, and displayed their issues through painting and photography. Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s social and historical significance will be discussed.
In this story it clearly shows us what the courts really mean by freedom, equality, liberty, property and equal protection of the laws. The story traces the legal challenges that affected African Americans freedom. To justify slavery as the “the way things were” still begs to define what lied beneath slave owner’s abilities to look past the wounded eyes and beating hearts of the African Americans that were so brutally possessed.

Walker and Marshall write about an identity that they have found with African-American women of the past. They both refer to great writers such as Zora Neale Hurston or Phillis Wheatley. But more importantly, they connect themselves to their ancestors. The see that their writings can be identified with what the unknown African-American women of the past longed to say but they did not have the freedom to do so. They both admire many literary greats such as Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, and Jane Austen, but they appreciate these authors' works more than they can identify with them.
In Racial Formation, the two authors Michael Omi and Howard Winant develop the foundations for understanding the implications of race. Both authors delve into how the construction of racial relations has permeated into society, been contested, and changed over time. Omi and Winant attempt to display the oppressive actions in social structures, as well as the ideas and meanings that form their theory of race and racism. These theories are demonstrated in the brutal reality of Douglass’ life as a slave in My Bondage and My Freedom. Douglass recounts his efforts to educate himself, and ultimately, his resolve to escape to freedom. Society views race as a function of biology rather than a socially constructed method to differentiate human beings.
Generally I discovered Walker’s Appeal is an inspiring document that could provoke anyone to fight for the rights of man and freedom. I found it interesting how Walker had such a broad knowledge of Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultures to support his views on “colored people of these United States are the most degraded, wretched, and abject set of beings that ever lived since the world began” (3). Also I acknowledged how Walker had certain themes in the text that were also repetitive in the story of Frederick Douglass himself. Douglass text as well I discovered the thoughts that there is a difference between slaveholding Christianity and a pure Christianity that blacks affect their own circumstance by being servile, and black people ought to fight as Walker did even if it’s destined for death.
She focuses not only in the obvious forms of resistance, but also its disguised forms by utilizing resources such as slave narratives and interviews, papers and journals. She demonstrates how enslaved people threatened the control of plantation owner’s space, time and movement through movement of bodies, objects, and information. Her work exhibits extended research of analysis on already researched topics. Camp gives a new angle on these already researched topics by providing a deeper analysis as if she knows what these enslaved women truly think. Thus, successfully showing the efforts of black women trying to establish ownership of their own body, showing their hope for freedom, and expressing their emotions as a way to show that they are more than just the price they were bought
In From Slavery to Freedom (2007), it was said that “the transition from slavery to freedom represents one of the major themes in the history of African Diaspora in the Americas” (para. 1). African American history plays an important role in American history not only because the Civil Rights Movement, but because of the strength and courage of Afro-Americans struggling to live a good life in America. Afro-Americans have been present in this country since the early 1600’s, and have been making history since. We as Americans have studied American history all throughout school, and took one Month out of the year to studied African American history. Of course we learn some things about the important people and events in African American history, but some of the most important things remain untold which will take more than a month to learn about.
Walker brought most of the horrific and even sickening scenes of the book to life, with the help and influence of society in history. One of the greatest influences to have an effect on Walker's style of writing and especially The Color Purple, were instances from slavery and prejudice. The whites owned and empowered America during the time of slavery. They had no respect for any other race, which they thought of as substandard. As Lean'tin Bracks stated, blacks were considered to be racially inferior, and they were used for the exploitation of the white culture. The whites used the black people as animals, and made them do their every bidding. Blacks and whites were separated form each other and this segregation of the two races barred blacks from legal and economic access, and they were put to punishment by the white culture. Interaction between the two races rarely occurred other than specific affairs or whites intruding on blacks. There were no penalties to pay by whites, therefore intrusions were common, and they took advantage of the African-Americans. The intrusions varied from breaking and entering to rape and murder for no apparent reason (84). Walker used this basis of racism to grip the reader and take them through a story of a women, who survives physical, verbal, and emotional abuse, everyday.
