Haunted houses are not common in Waynesboro, Virginia but every year there is a haunted forest done to raise money for breast cancer. The haunted forest is called Twisted Creations and was where the first truly terrifying event that ever happened to me took place. I was a scrawny, timid eight year old girl with large, bright blue eyes, sandy-brown hair cut to my shoulder blades who led a sheltered life. Two days before Halloween, my family and I were sitting in our living room after dinner watching the movie Hocus Pocus. My mother was on her computer when she asked “You all want to go to the haunted forest?” We (my three sisters, my father and myself) were all bored and looking for something to do so of course we said yes. We piled in my mom’s red jeep commander and were off.
We arrived at Twisted Creations. I realized then that the forest was not really a forest at all but instead someone's backyard that they had decided to decorate. There was a long line beside the house and the owners had a little concession stand set up in the garage where you could buy warm apple cider and popcorn balls and a few other things. As we got closer, I noticed that around the ticket booth was decorated with carved pumpkins. Some pumpkins had cartoon characters, others had a witch profiles, and still others had plain jack-o-lantern faces but they all had fake tea lights

I was nervous but I was not as timid of a child as I had been. The chainsaw man was still there but this time I did not run away. I had changed, became more hardened and my flight or fight response had changed. Instead of fleeing, I would fight whatever obstacle got in my way. Sometimes I am ashamed that I ran and that is why my instincts changed. Haunted houses will always terrify me but my experience at Twisted Creations has allowed me to grow and learn about myself. How I respond and the terror that is possible to
The Haunting of Hill House is a gothic horror novel written by Shirley Jackson. Supernatural occurrences take place within the house revolving around Eleanor. Eleanor is a thirty-two-year-old woman who never once has felt the sense of inclusion. Eleanor seems to never recall the feeling of delight in her adult years due to the fact that she was a caretaker for her now deceased Mother; who took away most of her freedom by being incredibly restrictive. Dr. Montague, a doctor that specializes in analysis of the supernatural rents Hill House, a supposedly haunted house. During the renting period, Dr. Montague begins an experiment inviting individuals who have had involvement in abnormal events
The particular story I collected takes place in Philadelphia, where ghost stories are plentiful. Philadelphia is an old city with a rich cultural heritage, and our founding fathers made history in the place that was once our nation’s capital (Eidmann). Many believe that their spirits and spirits of those from colonial times still lurk around. It is easy to feel like spirits are around when in a place where many people have lived and died before, and in a place that is filled with old buildings and landmarks. All of these factors make this city a perfect place for a ghost story.
Yeah, there’s one [story] that’s pretty scary that comes to mind. My one friend [name omitted] – I think you met her once – well she moved to Jersey from Texas about 3 years ago and told me about this place kids would go when they were drunk or just looking for something to do. I asked her if she’d ever been there, but she told me she’d only heard it from a friend of a friend kind of deal. Well, an...
Was Eleanor mentally healthy or unhealthy? In the book The Haunting of Hill House, written by Shirley Jackson, the main character was Eleanor Vance. She was a 32-year-old woman that showed signs that she was mentally unhealthy. After receiving an invitation to stay at Hill House from Dr. Montague, a stranger to Eleanor and the rest of the invited guests, she made the carefree decision to accept the invitation to the comfortable country home (2). She felt as though Hill House was her calling, even though she had never laid eyes on the property and had no knowledge of what to expect. There was no way to know if the doctor could have been a psychopath that wanted Eleanor for some crazed morbid “experiment,” yet she had
The Haunting of Hill House written by Shirley Jackson, and Tony Burgess’ People Live Still in Cashtown Corners, are horror novels. Both evoke fear in readers in dissimilar ways. The Haunting of Hill House takes readers on an ominous journey that creates feelings of uneasiness, while Burgess’ novel has a direct approach to create fear, right from a rampant killer’s point of view. Despite the differing approaches on the classic genre, Jackson and Burgess demonstrate that horror stems from isolation. Isolation negatively affects mental health, which produces petrifying chaos and destruction of oneself and others.
Have you ever had that one bone chilling moments when you feel like someone is there, but no one is? Or when you are home alone and you are positive you heard someone or something. When you turn around when you hear something and all it is a long dark hallway. In this paper you will read about some of the scariest places in America. Imagine walking alone in one of those buildings and hearing a noise or seeing someone or something, but you know you are all alone. Or are you? Norwich state hospital, the Lizzie Borden house, the Stanley hotel, the White House, and the oak alley plantation are some of the buildings where rapes, beatings, death, starving’s, ax murders, and slaves were.

The Nelly Butler hauntings is referred to as the first recorded ghost story in American history (LiBrizzi 5), and possibly the most exciting hauntings to date as there are still many unsolved mysteries. The apparition appeared on more than 30 separate occasions to over 100 witnesses in Sullivan, Maine, just over fifteen years after the American Revolution (5-6). Although the Nelly Butler apparition is one of the most convincing ghosts of all time, it was subject to suspicions of fraud. These claims turn out to be groundless as the evidence reveals the ghost to be genuine.
This story, although somewhat unique in its exact plot, contains many elements that make it a typical and traditional ghost story. These elements suggest common fears in today’s society of people in general, and children specifically.

Oh the Horror: An Examination of the Mind in the Horror Genre “Books are a uniquely portable magic,” said famed horror author Stephen King. Horror, especially, is a portal inside the mind. While most associate horror with blood, gore, and the supernatural, the true meaning of horror is to serve as a portal to the psyche of the author, the characters, and the first audience of the work. Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, and Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House are paragons to the importance of understanding these psyches and the intentions and values of the author.
The characters are Charles- the stepfather, age 35, Johnny-the stepbrother, age 26, Elena-age 17, and Xavier boyfriend/husband, age 21. This story is in honor of my great friend Abbey and the many other women who have been abused. There once was a girl named Elena.
