Singapore. Is it an island, a city, or a state? Surprisingly, this exotic sounding name applies to all three. The island is a diamond shape. It is a diamond in the sea, sparkling with bright lights at night, and a gem of great value to the world with its important port, and financial center of the world. It is one of the largest in the world. It is necessary for Senior Enlisted Leaders (SEL) to understand the importance of economics and the military strategic for the United States military because Singapore plays a major part of east politically and economically and the headquarters of the Commander, Logistics Group Western Pacific (COMLOG WESTPAC) and the Commander, Destroyer Squadron Seven for the United States Navy. The island is only 26 miles long and 14 miles wide in area. This means it is about one-fourth the size of long island, New York. The area of Singapore does not remain constant, however, because they frequently added the landfill when they needed more space for buildings. Its more than 5.5 million people live in the city. The official languages are Chinese, English, Malay, and Tamil (the language of southern India). At least 80 percent of Singapore’s citizens speak and understand rudimentary English (CIA The World Factbook, 2014). Singapore is only 87 miles north of the equator. It has no marked change of seasons. The average temperature the year round is 88 degrees Fahrenheit and the average annual rainfall is over 90 inches because the entire island surrounded by the sea. The U.S. Navy nurtured into a challenging power in the years previous to World War II, with battleship construction being revived in 1937, commencing with the USS North Carolina . It was able to add to its fleets throughout the early years of the war when the US was still not involved, growing production of vessels both large and small. In a conflict that had a number of amphibious landings, naval superiority was important in both Europe and the Pacific. The mutual resource...
Abrashoff begins the book by informing the reader of how his story begins; when he is given command of the USS Benfold. The Benfold was the Navy’s most advanced guided missile destroyer the Navy had in 1997 and its command was to be one of the Navy’s top innovators. Unfortunately, Abrashoff points out some flaws with the Navy’s personnel management that I found to be shocking. First, was that “nearly 35 percent of the people who joined the military annually, wouldn’t complete their enlistment contracts.” (p.2) Such turnover can be understood by many business managers in the service industry, but unlike the quick and cheap training process for them, the cost for the military (taxpayers) is astounding. Abrashoff estimates that it cost roughly “$35,000 to recruit a trainee and tens of thousands more in additional training costs to get new personnel to the basic level of proficiency.” (p.2) Curbing this trend on his own ship and eventually helping to achieve a decrease overall in the mil...

... army of the enemy and the capacities they had. Although US intelligence said they had improved their efficiency so another Pearl Harbor doesn’t happen again, the true is that there are still imperfections on the structure of the agencies, and the rival relationship between those, makes things worse.
November 2011, the first year I got to go hunting with my dad. I got excited for this year because I became old enough to shoot my first deer with my dad in the hunting stand. I thrived to get my first buck all through November (SV). The night before opening day my dad and I usually go out to chat with my uncles and tell hunting stories at our shack. My uncles always tell old stories of when they got their first buck, and I became nervous knowing I might have a chance at one tomorrow. We drove home that night and I didn't get much sleep at all because I had constant excitement flowing through my body knowing I get to go on my first hunt tomorrow.
Naples is a very unique city that attracts people from all over the world to its beautiful surroundings. Amongst the pristine beaches and championship golf courses, a teenager can find many entertaining locations. One such area can be found in downtown Naples on Fifth Avenue. Along this stretch of road near the beach lies a vast array of shops, cafes, restaurants, and other establishments. I often find myself spending many nights on Fifth Avenue, walking along the tree-lined streets or sitting in one of the numerous cafés or restaurants.

“India is the meeting place of the religions and among these Hinduism alone is by itself a vast and complex thing, not so much a religion as a great diversified and yet subtly unified mass of spiritual thought, realization and aspiration”(Sri Aurobindo). Hindus believe in karma, which means that the actions that are made will affect this life or the lives to come (Fisher 120). Reincarnation is a rebirth in a new life (Fisher 120). In Hinduism the roles that the women play in their society is similar to Rukmani’s in Nectar in a Sieve. Hindu women take care of the children and help the husband with farm work or any other work ("Hindu Beliefs"). The three main themes in the book that connect to the Hindu religion are Humans choose their actions which cause happiness or sadness, suffering purifies for the soul, and truth is the most important moral value to have. Every action made by humans is based on a choice the outcome could be happy or sad.

When most people travel, the drive to and from your destination is usually the worst part of taking a vacation. It is exhausting, kids can get annoying, and sitting in a vehicle for that long is never fun. My trip to Florida with my boyfriend and his family was absolutely catastrophic. Actually being in Florida was an amazing vacation, it was the drive there and back that was awful. It was not your average trip.
