Although it has been years since our most recent visit to the shore side of Ocean City, New Jersey, the memories and senses never abandon my mind. All I can recall is the wondrous combination of the scorching heat, the grainy sand in between my toes, and the overwhelming smell of salt and delicious foods . . . I feel as if I am standing right there right now! Who could ever relinquish the beauty of the shore, the healing the shore accomplishes, and the tastes of the wondrous foods?
Firstly, Ocean City boasts an awe-inspiring appeal to our senses through its grace. I begin each visit standing stagnant; stunned by the beauty the city entails. Each time, I soak up the sensation of the grain beneath my feet, the way it appeared as though the waves

This was the long-awaited activity—walking the whole two-and-a-half miles of the Ocean City boardwalk! We would usually start from the south end of the boardwalk. My favorite one-stop shop was Manco & Manco's Pizza! I say “one-stop shop” because this was where I filled up on pizza—almost so much so that I could not eat anymore! Needless to say, I still did eat after stopping at Manco & Manco's Pizza. Boy . . . did I ever. In addition, there was the renowned Original Kohr Brothers Frozen Custard. There was no way you could depart Ocean City without getting to experience the disorderliness of the ice cream melting and running down your arm. Even so, this makes the experience all the better and much more worth it! As we continue down the boardwalk, it is almost as if confronting a mist of aromas! Each and every inch you move, there is a new flavor, sight, and sound! That, however, does not discount, yet again, the repetitive screeches of seagulls, the laughter of others nearby, and the distant crashes of waves. Once I fill up on all of the food I can handle—and I swear to you that I fill up more than I do for Thanksgiving dinner—I people watch. I am normally the only one to do this out of my family, but it brings me so much joy to simply observe people naturally. I see children with the brightest smiles on their faces, I see people playing games, purchasing an endless amount of souvenirs, and I see people relaxing. Everyone is
The whole island is in the shape of a giant square with white sandy beaches full of people sunbathing, swimming and fishing right on the shoreline. From the end of the hot pavement parking lot to shore of the beach is an ocean of soft white sand. The pearlescent white sand seems to know how to invade every nook and cranny almost as if it enjoys it. Walking around the beach on the fluffy whiteness surrounding the parking lot, the seagulls are fighting over scraps of food on the ground. “Sandy beach ecosystems provide invaluable services to humankind. Their functions have been exploited through history, with significant anthropogenic effects (Lucrezi, 2015)”. This white sandy beach is a beautiful refuge from the mundane grind of everyday life. The smell of the misty ocean air mixed with the sound of seagulls hovering above and kids playing is a tonic for the mind. The feel of the sand between their toes and the waves crashing over them as people swim in the water, or the jerk of a fishing pole when someone is catching a fish makes Fred Howard Park one of the best places to relax. Standing on the beach looking out on the water, people are kayaking and windsurfing. The lifeguards watching vigilantly in their bright red shirt and shorts, blowing their whistles when they see someone being unsafe. After a long day of swimming and laying around visitors head back over the soft white sand to the showers, in order to rinse off the menacing sand that clings to everything like a bad habit. Everyone rushes over the hot pavement burning their feet to reach their cars so they can put away their beach paraphernalia which is still covered in the white sand, nearly impossible to completely leave behind, so when they get home it serves as a reminder of where they were that
In her narrative essay, “FYB”, Zadie Smith expresses her belief that if one redirects their mindset to a more limited perspective and uses the limitless Manhattan mentality at certain times, one can arrive at their beach. A beach is a mentality, and Smith finds her beach by coming to peace with Manhattan’s beach. The idea of a person’s “beach” being hard to discover may be observed through Smith’s personal background, as it is almost mythical for this English writer living in Soho, Manhattan to come by a beach.
The smell of the restaurants faded and the new, refreshing aroma of the sea salt in the air took over. The sun’s warmth on my skin and the constant breeze was a familiar feeling that I loved every single time we came to the beach. I remember the first time we came to the beach. I was only nine years old. The white sand amazed me because it looked like a wavy blanket of snow, but was misleading because it was scorching hot. The water shone green like an emerald, it was content. By this I mean that the waves were weak enough to stand through as they rushed over me. There was no sense of fear of being drug out to sea like a shipwrecked sailor. Knowing all this now I knew exactly how to approach the beach. Wear my sandals as long as I could and lay spread out my towel without hesitation. Then I’d jump in the water to coat myself in a moist protective layer before returning to my now slightly less hot towel. In the water it was a completely different world. While trying to avoid the occasional passing jellyfish, it was an experience of
Every summer my family and I go to our house in the cape just north of Boston. One hot summer morning, I was leaving the house to meet my family at the beach, suddenly I remembered my mother asked me to pick up a jar of “Kingfish Herring” for her and her friend to snack on at the beach.
“The Beach Builders” by John Seabrook (The New Yorker, 2012) is a nonfiction article on the significance of Jersey Shore. This shore is said to have been the first developed coastline in the United States. Jersey shore is also known as the place where “Americans learned to love the beach”. John started off with historical facts dating from the March 1962 storm. This storm is also known as the Five High Storm. The work of the mayor Jonathan Oldham, of Harvey Cedars, was also described. The article focuses on the events that followed Five High Storm. A great emphasis on the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) has been given. Credit for securing build a wide beach at Harvey Cedars was also given to ACE. This beach is nearly a hundred and twenty-five feet and consisted of twenty-two feet above sea level dunes. The beach required 2.7 million cubic yards of sand. This project is estimated to have cost twenty-six million dollars, in the 1960s. John Seabrook also mentioned the legal and political conflicts of building this beach.
The California coastline is full of many beautiful beaches and breathtaking views. One of these places is the Santa Monica Pier, which is one of the oldest piers in California and has a rich history of change and resilience in spite of many challenges to its survival. If you arrive early in the morning before tourists swarm the amusement park side of the pier, the charm and nostalgia of the wooden pier transport you to a different kind of life, where nothing feels more important than the creak of the wooden planks beneath your feet, the fresh salty air, and the ocean that stretches out endlessly in front of you. Santa Monica
This is an ideal and perfect atmosphere to experience the famous California lifestyle, centered on three miles of wide and sandy beaches. This City enjoys a mild climate that averaging to 68 degrees Fahrenheit a year and the air quality is steadily good and refreshing in the coastal district part of the Santa Monica.
I could almost hear the sea lions. There were some people on the beach, but few were venturing "Uptown" to stroll the boards. We used to call it the Inlet, the new name must have been cooked up by the $30 million dollar Do AC marketing team, along with the Tourist Zone trash cans lining the Boardwalk. A few blocks up, the Boardwalk ended at Rhode Island Avenue, so I cut over to the lighthouse. The property off the Boardwalk is still available for $345 a square foot. There were a couple of people on Pacific Avenue waiting for a Jitney, and I passed a deli and food market. When I walked through this area 20 years ago, I rarely saw anyone on the street. I thought I was in the twilight zone, with new apartments and condos, cars parked in attached garages, but no
In literature, motifs are used constantly to provide a separate meaning to an idea, which ultimately results in a better comprehension of the text and the themes. Charles Dickens illustrates this by manipulating a strong force of nature to portray the events that created a large turning point in the history of France- the French Revolution. In A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens creates the descriptive motif of the sea to describe the widespread anger and destruction of the revolutionaries, and to portray a large feeling of anticipation leading up to the event.
The beach offered a perfect spot to nestle in the warm sand and relax after swimming. In my childhood, I constructed sand castles. The water washed across the sand and formed little ripples on the beach. With my little hand, I grabbed the wet sand. The sand drizzled from my hands and formed the towers of drip castles. I would dig into the sand and carved out a small moat around the castle. After the night, the tide swept away the sand castles and the beach returned to its previous form. Also, I swung on the beach. While on the swing, I watch the sunset. The sunset formed a palette mix of pink, orange and brown. The blue waves of Lake Michigan stretched for miles beyond the sight of the naked eye. The Lake spread as far away as the ocean. I frequently wondered if anyone, except a superhuman could see the other side of Lake Michigan. A different activity on the beach was beach volleyball. As a child, I lacked athletics fitness but enjoyed the occasional beach volleyball game. Other people on the beach joined in the fray and people moved in and out the volleyball game. The memories of the beach hold a special place in my
As we turn onto the cracked cement that is Oceanside Drive, my mood immediately lifts. Houses stand aligned like train cars, facing the frigid Atlantic. Closer to the end of the street is an evergreen cottage where our wheels halt in front of. The second my feet touch the ground that familiar, classic, salty air tells me I’m home. The wooden steps creek under me as I race up them to the door. This house holds so many memories of roaring laughter, crowded couches, and delicious food. Even inside I can hear the steady crashing blows from our closest neighbor: the ocean. One short sprint down the splinting boardwalk and I’m where I love to be most. The fine grains of sand slide through my fingers while the teal ocean, where my siblings and I have
Surrounded by all my front-runner population and chattels, efficient was not under any condition a dull stage. Though deplore obviously like we used without exception rising stage on the shore and in the thin, we also come up with indoors the shore home, or just hung out and talked time utilize the stoop, looking out at a good-looking coast sunset. When I was younger, no of a former period than could be six oldness old, I precious the waves. My cousins prospective too afraid to go near the big ones, preferring to nurse the sand. But apropos me, the madcap, I suppress the lethargic waves, unfulfilled only the big ones that can only be deeper spray.
As I walked down the sidewalk, my nose picked up the salty scent of the sea breeze. I looked ahead and saw the gleaming beach in the far distance. Before me, the tranquil city along with the endless blue sea sandwiched the golden beach that stretched across for miles. Then my eyes were grasped by the incredible beauty of the city skyscrapers that stood hundreds of meters tall, and they probably had also captured the sight of many other tourists. Some people were jogging and others were bike riding Just as the yellow sun rises from behind the buildings. It’s easy for many people t...
As I walked down the worn dirt path to the ocean, I was astonished by how many people were lounging by the water.. As I got closer to the water’s edge, I contemplated why more people don 't swim and decide to tan in the sun instead. The feeling of being alone with the ocean and my thoughts played in my mind.
The city was blinding me with shining lights that you could see from space. It was glistening in the night and dull by day. There were cars parked all alongside the streets and traffic jams every corner.
