Finally, it’s June 3rd. Laura is going to be graduating from Silas University today with her whole family present. With Carmilla still in Toronto, Laura couldn’t wait to see her girlfriend after not being around her for a month. School kept Laura busy, while Carmilla had to deal with work. They’ve had skype dates and Carmilla even managed to help Laura with some homework over the webcam. Finally, she gets to see her girlfriend face to face and she couldn’t be happier. Carmilla apologized most of the time for being busy, Laura felt the same since she had to work extra hard just to make sure she could graduate with honors. She is and she couldn't be happier. What Carmilla failed to mention is that back in Toronto, aside from working full time
at the art gallery, she was spending a lot of time talking to Michael, with a question on her mind.
Pashtana said she would rather die than not go to school and acted on her words. Her education is limited and she doesn’t have all the recourses to make school easier, yet she still loves and wants all the knowledge she can get. While I sit in my three story private school, a clean uniform free of holes or loose seams, my macbook air in my lap, the smell of cookies rising up from the cafeteria, wishing to be anywhere else but there. No one has beat me because I want to go to school, no one has forced me into a marriage, I’ve never put my life in jeopardy for the sake of education. Pashtana’s life and choices made me take a moment to stop and reflect on my own life and how fortunate I am to have what I have. We dread the thought of school because to us it is a chore, it’s a hassle, it’s something that messes with our sleep schedule, it is something that gets in the way of lounging around and binge watching Netflix. Pashtana doesn’t take her school and education for granted because she does not have the same liberties we do. While we enjoy driving into the city and shopping over the weekend, Pashtana unwillingly makes wedding arrangements with her cousin. While we complain about our mom nagging us to clean our room, Pashtana is getting beaten by her father because she wants to learn more about the world. While we have stocked fridges and pantries and

Have you ever had one person who you have absolutely nothing in common with, but for some bizarre reason you “click” with them? It is astounding that two completely different people with two divergent personalities, morals, goals or lifestyles can compliment each other. In Loung Ung’s, First They Killed My Father, the dynamic duo, Loung and Chou are so completely different, yet their relationship works. At the start of the novel, Loung is the striking age of five years old and Chou is eight years old. Loung is very outgoing, loud, and obnoxious, while Chou is reserved, calm, and level headed. Both manage to survive the horrible genocide that struck their country in 1975 when Pol Pot, the communist leader of the Angker, turned their world upside down. The girls use two completely different ways of coping and accepting what happened. Through the use of symbolism and point of view, Loung and her sister Chou, although best friends, are complete antitheses in every way possible.
Her first week as a freshman college student reveals a lot about the culture of undergraduate college students to her. It shows her a completely different perspective of their lives since she’s a professor, and times have significantly changed since she was a freshman. Obviously, it is very hard for someone of Nathan’s
In the story, The Vampyre by Polidori women are marginalized and seen as powerless whereas in the story, Carmilla by Le Fanu its heavily female centric with both of the main characters being female. The vampire, Carmilla, in Carmilla presents some complexities when considering traditional gender roles whereas the vampire, Lord Ruthven, in The Vampyre by Polidori heavily carries a masculine gender role. For instance, Lord Ruthven carries this masculine gender role by asserting his power and privilege status which imposes that all women want to be with him and all the men want to be his friend. A depiction of Lord Ruthven’s masculinity is seen in his pursuit and sole sexual intentions towards the Italian girl. In comparison, Carmilla does not
A girl named ,Oxana Malaya, was abandoned by her alcoholic parents when she was born. She grew up around dogs. She was seven years old when she was found, by then, she didn't have the ability to talk and she had no social skills. She would only act like a dog, barking, sleeping, and even cleaning herself like a dog. The environment a person is raised in will develope how a person acts, responds, and even thinks. There are three main ideas on how the environment shapes a person's behavior. The abandoned children funds says “Shockingly, there are over 20 million homeless or abandoned children in the world today - a majority of them are orphans.”The first is your own experiences can change your neuron's response. From the outset of the story there is an overwhelming sense of hope that has enveloped the entire community and school with the upcoming graduation. The communitie's involvement strengthens the authors excitement in her rite of passage. Everyone is preparing for the ceremony and seeking to see how it will affect the lives of those involved. "Only a small percentage would be continuing on to college" (835) and others were just excited for the "glorious release" (834) from school. She felt like she was on top of the world, after all, "the graduating classes themselves were the nobility" (834). It is obvious how much pride she takes in her community by the way she describes her class as "an extended family." (834). The author's school was not the most impressive school compared to the white schools in the area but that could not damper the spirit that was filling the air. Parents who were buying or making new outfits for their graduates made everyone including the author the center of attention. Her "momma launched out on [hers]," (835) and she was swollen with pride that she was going to be a walking mod...
Another key reason that it's more likely that after the end of the story in the novel, Laura and Howie will remain close friends (or even a couple) for many years is that Laura and Howie keep eachother safe. When Howie and Laura were in the dining hall at the new camp. Howie kicks Pardoe when he was harassing Laura (100). And as well when Laura was inside the cottage and Howie was outside the cottage (6). The point is it shows how they both care about each other and want to keep eachother safe. Howie already defends Laura when someone is trying to harass or hurt her. If Howie already takes care of her when their stranger and just getting to know each other, imagine later on when they get to know eachother better. And maybe even become more
I went and looked over the hill side to the city of Vermont. This is one of the biggest days in my life, I think to myself. I glance over to the people I see showing up and I realize how much I have missed them, I see Arturo, Aurora and Yolanda and wave them over. Aurora comes and gives me a hug, “Marcelo doesn’t want to be squished before his wedding, let me go Aurora”. After about what feels like 10 minutes she lets go and we talk about what she has missed. I tell her how Jasmine is so happy to finally be living in Vermont and being able to for fill her dream job. We finally stop talking and I go to find Jasmine, “Jasmine, come with Marcelo to the entrance to welcome people.” As we are welcoming people,
“I’m not getting a full-time job! I ‘m going to keep working on my paintings and pottery. I didn’t want to move back into your house. I had no choice. You just don’t understand what I’ve been through. Why are you giving me such a hard time? I’m a twenty-four-year-old woman. I don’t need you telling me what to do.” Suddenly, the table shook and some of the gravy spilled out of the bowl onto the table. I looked up at my sister, who was now standing. Her eyes welled up with tears.
During Laura’s assessment I would like to find out about her sleep, how many hours a night she sleeps, how often does she wake up, does she have frequent nightmares. If there is a disturbance with her sleep this could explain why she falls asleep in class or arrives late. I would like to find out if she has a situation in her life that is causing her to be sad and withdrawn from her friends. If she is depressed that could explain the crying, not playing with friends, and also the poor academic performance.
It had been a fairly good week. I received an A on another one of Mr. Jackson’s exams, and completed another week of eighth grade basketball ‘practice’, which in my case consisted of standing against the wall watching the starters run the plays. It was only my first year playing, so I was just enjoying being on the team with my friends. But that weekend was to be unlike most others in my past. I was attending my aunt’s wedding downtown. I was to watch my aunt, who I had known my whole life, and her boyfriend, who I had known for about 3 years, commit to each other the rest of their lives before the audience of people they knew the best. The last wedding I had attended, in 2004, was a very different experience for me. I was younger and knew less about how the world
