What events contribute to make a person behave the way they do? How does the wealth, intelligence, atmosphere, psychological factors, and their social interactions affect the person? Behavior is defined as the observable activity in a human or animal. There are many factors that contribute to the way a person behaves. These contributions can vary from person to person; one person might have one of the factors that determines one persons behavior but the other person may not. A person that is of wealthy decent has more issues functioning as a “normal” person, finding it difficult adapting to real world life and real world problems. The intelligence levels of an individual reflect in their behavior. My evidence for the claim previously made is a survey I conducted on thirteen teachers at Woodrow Wilson High School. The survey states the question, “Do you think there is a correlation between behavior and intelligence?” In my findings ten out of the thirteen teachers surveyed think there is a correlation between behavior and intelligence, that is 77%. Some of the quotes from the teachers surveys that support the claims are, “On multiple occurrences, I have witnessed a direct correlation of behavior and grade, i.e. poor (low) behaviors led to low grades and good (high) behaviors led to high grades.” “I feel that bad behavior promotes bad grades.” “For the vast majority, I believe that lower intellect levels do lead to bad behavior. As a teacher, it is common place to expect bad behavior from students that have a lower intellect.” “I do believe there is a correlation. Sometimes people with low intelligence do not understand what constitutes bad behavior, nor do they truly understand the consequences.” “I think there is a huge correlation between behavior and intelligence.” “ I believe there is a direct correlation between behavior and intelligence. A persons behavior is greatly affected on peer pressure and influence. Peer influence is defined as “when you choose to do something you wouldn't otherwise do, because you want to feel accepted and valued by your friends”(Peer pressure and influence:teenagers). Peer pressure is defined as “social pressure by members of one’s peer group to take a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted” (Dictionary.com). Peer pressure can either be negative or positive. Negative peer pressure tends to make people do things that promote bad behavior, such as cigarette smoking, truancy, drug use, sexual activity, fighting, theft, etc. If an individual surrounds theirself with other individuals that partake in activities such as these they are more likely to do them even if they know it is wrong. As a teenager we are all looking to be accepted by our peers and will do whatever it is they want us to so we can be accepted. That is to say the feeling of needing to be accepted by ones peers is done consciously; the person starts to do what their friends do without thinking about it. (Teen 3) In fact, teens are more likely to be affected by peer pressure because they are trying to figure out who they are. (How 1) Therefore, they see themselves as how their peers would view them so they change to fit their peer’s expectations. (How 1) Secondly, the feeling of needing to rebel and be someone that isn’t who their parents are trying to make them be affects them. (Teen 2) Thus, parents are relied on less and teens are more likely to go to their peers about their problems and what choices to make. (How 1) Also, their brains are not fully matured and teens are less likely to think through their choices thoroughly before doing it. (Teen 6) Lastly, how a child is treated by his peers can affect how they treat others; this can lead them into bullying others who are different. (Teen 3) Consequently this can affect a teen into doing something good or bad; it depends who you surround yourself with.
Although some animal studies appear to suggest heredity have the greatest influence, a seemingly more accurate conclusion may be drawn form human studies on intelligence.
One should remember that not all peer pressure is bad, although that is mostly what you see today. Good peer pressure needs to be done more, because why would you want to make someone do something bad, instead of helping them do something good and impacting them, because honestly who would want a worse world rather than a better one? Peer presure is a very dangerous thing and could lead to an adolecent taking a different path than the one that they wanted. In some cases, however, peer pressure can be beneficial. If you have many peers that are all planning on going to the same college and they have asked you to join, you may feel obligated, or pressured, into doing better in your schooling to receive the grades you need to go to that college. The peers you have can also influence you without using peer pressure. If you have a group of peers that you socialize with on a daily bases, you start to act like them which can help you or hurt you depending on the peers you have chosen to interact with. According to Ben Michaelis, a person 's intelligence is not measured by how well they perform academically, but by how well they adapt to their situations and environment (Michaelis). The idea that students who attain outstanding grades in school are more intellectual than students who receive poor grades is unfair to all students. In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner identified different types of intelligence, including interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and musical intelligence (Fiero), so to assume that a person is unintelligent based on poor academic performance is unreasonable. In the article, “What Does it Mean To Be Smart?”, the author gives an example of a woman named Angie to demonstrate that academic intelligence is not the main indication of someone’s overall intelligence (Michaelis). Although she did not excel in an academic setting, she had the ability to adapt to her circumstances and capitalize on her talents and interests to create a successful career for herself (Michaelis). IQ has long been a measure of one’s ability to be successful. Educators use students’ “intelligence quotas” to judge them from a young age and streamline their education in certain directions. High IQ students are given more opportunities, accelerated lessons, gifted programs, and other advantages to develop their innate talent while low IQ students are slowed down and less is expected of them. However, as recent findings have shown, an extremely high IQ does not correlate with extremely high educational achievement.
Personality can affect many things in a person’s life. This includes how a person will react to a situation. “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” (Dr.Seuss). Society often thinks of peer pressure as a negative implement. Often times the community imagines peer pressure as teen influencing one another to experiment with drugs, alcohol, and sexual intercourse. But really all peer pressure is, is the encouragement of changing values and behaviors of an individual. Peer pressure can be thought of as positive for teens, because it allows and individual to become a leader in an environment, strong encouragement to work hard in school, and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Peer pressure on adolescents has been a widely discussed topic amongst parents, guardians and researchers. Many question how can parents prevent young adults from following the wrong foot steps of friends or other role models. For the most part, we are too focused on bad peer pressure and no one seems to question, that peer pressure can also be beneficial to adolescents. The relationship between personality and behavior. Does our personality cause the behavior to stay calm or go on a rampage? People all over the world have different types of disorders and a certain disorder is called a personality disorder. Arguments from researchers have been made whether or not with someone who has a personality disorder has anger problems and is a danger to others (Davison, 2012). Behavioral problems come from social-cultural influences such as presence of others, the media and peer influences (Myers, 2014).
Peer pressure can be both a positive and negative influence and will challenge us do things whether they are right or wrong. This is left for you to determine.
