When asked, every person could point out an item, place, or person that they have personally connected with due to values or memories that said thing represents. These icons may gain widespread attention due to their influence or prevalence in society. However, our tribute to certain icons is not a new practice. A major dilemma of the eighth century Catholic Church revolved around icons and whether they should be allowed and in what form. From this time stemmed our inclination to revel in the glory of certain icons and the worship of these icons can be, at times, similar to the way cultural icons were honored and worshipped in the eighth century. To examine the modern version of the practice in relation to eighth century icon worship, we will examine the qualities that have made Derek Jeter a …show more content…
As described early, Derek Jeter represented a bright light in a dark period of baseball when cheating via steroid use and off-field issues were prevalent. Unlike many of his fellow players, Jeter remained in a positive public light, along with excelling exceptionally on the field. He quickly became a role model to people of all and continues to influence young baseball players even though his life on the field is over. Much like Jeter, these religious icons in the eighth century represented something greater than the physical icon itself. For eighth century citizens, through these images such as saints and he Virgin Mary, who were not to be worshipped, but honored, God was worshipped because the work of God put these saints onto the earth (First Apology of St. John of Damascus Against Those Who Attack the Divine Images, 16). Just as images of Christ depicted his good works and provided a model of how to live your life, Jeter being in the spotlight of America provided us with the same model of
Baseball is Michael’s only way to a better future. Michael, the main character in the book “Heat” by Mike Lupica, is a 12 year old boy who moved to New York from Cuba. Michael is gifted. He has an arm that throws baseballs super fast. But with his dad gone Michael can’t prove his age to the baseball team and the team needs his pitching skills. In the book Heat the symbol is Yankee Stadium. This symbol represents the main characters future. But the theme of the book is “family can come from the most unexpected places.”
Jeter received lots of recognition during his high school years at Kalamazoo Central. Jeter was heavily recruited by Yankees scout Hal Newhouser. After Jeter’s senior season, he received many awards. Among those awards was the 1992 High School Player of the Year for Gatorade, USA today, and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Jeter built up his great confidence through his parents help. Every school year, Derek’s parents would make him sign a contract on the dos and don’ts of Derek’s daily behavior. His parents always tol...
Book Report on Baseball: A History of America's Game by Benjamin G. Rader In "Baseball: A History of America's Game", the Author Benjamin G. Rader discusses the history of baseball and how it developed to present day. Rader explains how baseball started as a simple game consisting of no rules besides the players using a stick to hit a ball and its constant evolution to what the game is today. He also displays several issues which America's favorite sport has had while developing into the complex sport it is today. Although baseball has had several trials and tribulations throughout its history, it still remains America's favorite pastime.
On June 26th 1974, in Pequannock, New Jersey, Derek Sanderson Jeter was born. His parents were Charles Jeter and Dorothy Connors. His parents had a rare relationship for their time. Charles was african american and Dorothy was white. In the 1960s marriage of separate races was frowned upon but they loved each other and made it work. When Derek was still a small child, Charles moved the family to Kalamazoo, Michigan. This is where practically Dereks whole childhood took place.
Willie Mays once said, “In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport. You must also be prepared to work hard and be willing to accept constructive criticism. Without one-hundred percent dedication, you won’t be able to do this.” Willie Mays that gave all that he had and took criticism because he was black. He would always show up to the games to support his team even if he was benched.
Branch Rickey started his baseball career as just a mediocre player at best. (Baseball Hall of Fame) He may not have been the best of players, but he definitely made a huge impact on baseball. Branch Rickey was one of the most important and influential people in forming and shaping the way baseball is today. Branch Rickey created the minor league farm club system, which today gives young players the opportunity to develop and enhance the skills they need to be great. Branch Rickey’s most important contribution to baseball was when he signed Jackie Robinson. Branch Rickey took it as his responsibility to get African Americans their right to play ball in the Major Leagues. The signing of Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball and gave African Americans the right to play baseball in the Major Leagues.
Breaking the Racial Barrier in Baseball Although Jackie Robinson was not the best African-American baseball player of his time, his attitude and ability to handle racist harassment led the way for the rest of his race to play Major League Baseball, amongst other sports. Being accepted into professional sports also helped African-Americans become more easily accepted into other aspects of life. Jackie's impact in the world for the black population is enormous. According to Jessie Jackson, "A champion wins a World Series or an Olympic event and is hoisted on the shoulders of the fans.
In spite of the challenges that he faced along the way, Jackie Robinson was determined to succeed in Major League Baseball, it was this drive that led him to persist in integrating the sport of baseball. Early on, Jackie Robinson believed that God had a special purpose for him. Coming from a Christian background, Jackie Robinson believed that God was preparing him for something big, but he could still not see just what that would be (cite pg 37). Growing up, he excelled in many sports.
One of the most iconic names in baseball is the team name “New York Yankees”, and along with it have come some equally as famous players. The Yankees have had so much talent come through their stadium, names including Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra and Mickie Mantle to name a few. Though there are several arguments about who the greatest players of the game are it is no question who the top ten are from the New York team. Based on up to date career statistics these players have a ninety year span of talent between them. These players may not have top score in all parts of the game but they have all set certain records that either have yet to be broken or held for a longer time than most students have been alive.
For a shortstop, Derek was a good size at six feet, three inches and 195 pounds. A shortstop is typically tall, quick, and never overweight, just like Jeter. His legs and core were undoubtedly strong, which is imperative to be an infielder of high caliber. Derek 's workouts in the offseason were every day, after a period of rest for three weeks once the season concluded. During the workouts, Jeter super-set a variety of leg, back, chest, and arm exercises. Also, on each Tuesday and Thursday, he included a satisfying core workout to strengthen his abdomen and improve balance. Along with the weights, he performed different agility exercises and fields and hit hundreds of baseballs daily to maintain his game in the field. Although Derek 's performance was unique when compared to all players, his attitude is what makes him beloved and such a tragic loss to the baseball world when he retired. Jeter carried himself with class, dignity, and often times different girlfriends. Even though Jeter was one of the best ballplayers, he did not make it apparent that he knew it. He was incredibly modest and was always looking to improve his game. It seemed that Jeter wanted the best for everyone around him, as he was always generous and respectful, even to his opponents. Jeter set a standard for future players and single-handedly bettered the game

A common belief is that the only saint-like feature about Tom Brady was the miracle he performed in Super Bowl LI; however, this is a fallacy. Both Tom Brady, the quarterback for the New England Patriots, and St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder and first Superior General of the Society of Jesus, are remarkably similar. Despite existing in different centuries and engaging in almost polar opposite careers, both of these men have overcome adversity, sculpting their character, and since then have cemented their legacies in history.
In module one Dr. Ambrosio introduced and developed the images of the hero and the saint. He described heroes as unselfishly living in the pursuit of self-fulfillment and saints as living for others, accepting love from God and man while showing love in return. Heroes overcame their fate and were best represented in Homeric epics of Greek tragedies as the citizen hero. In representing both the hero and the saint one can come closest to deciphering the meaning of life as stated in the thesis. In this writer’s opinion, humans will fall into what the professor called “mutated versions” of a hero or saint (Ambrosio, 2008). For example, many saints in the bible were murderers and thieves who were repentant, converted and forgiven. Through this they became heroes of the Bible and devoted their lives to the love of God. The ways of both were marked with self sacrifice which agrees with this writer’s understanding of the meaning of life.
“Baseball was, is and always will be to me the best game in the world”. I have lived
Baseball originated from England. Many people believe that it was invented in 1839. But it did not have any rules until September 23, 1845. The first baseball game was played between two New York teams. The New York Nine and the New York Knickerbockers. The New York Nine beat the Knickerbockers twenty-three to one.
