The world today is a result of centuries of evolution; one of the major adaptations is technology, specifically the invention of the smartphone. The smartphone is a cellular phone that has the capabilities of performing similar functions to that of a computer (Oxford Dictionaries’ online dictionary, n.d.). The smartphone is owned by youth for the most part; however, adults and seniors are also turning toward using this device. This in turn demonstrates the popularity of this marvelous device, and is the reason why it is constantly monitored by its users. The continuous evolving of the populations' wants and needs such as communication, searching of information, entertainment and recording, makes owning a smartphone essential, and beneficial as it is portable, reliable and efficient.
To begin with, the most prominent function of the smartphone is for communication purposes. Communication is relayed in many forms; texting, calling or via social networking sites. Texting is the most common and quickest way of communication. Research conducted by Pew Internet and American Life Project indicates that 9 in 10 American smartphone users send and receive text (MarketingCharts, 2011). The text feature allows for delivery of information within a fast time frame, regardless of the receiver's location. On the other hand, even though this allows for a much faster way of communication with people, it also decreases the ability to use other, and much older ways of communication. According to a Huffington Post article, Cris Rowan, a therapist, argues that texting results in “no creativity, there’s no imagination, no self-initiation” (Bindley, 2011). However, texting and emailing is frequently seen as a downside as many studies indicate that they ...

One of our greatest technological advancements is the thing we hold in our hands everyday, our cell phones. Sometimes we don't realize just how much our phones can distract us from our lives. As a generation glued to our phones us teenagers send an average of 3,339 texts per month. In Randy Cohen's essay, “When texting is wrong” he states how we are overcome by texting and how it damages our social and personal lives.

Many people in today’s society rely on technology to help us with our daily lives and help us stay connected to family, friends, and other people. The advancements in today’s cell phone technology is very complex and made to be efficient for their owners, allowing them to surf the net and IM message people instantly. Cellphones in particular have developed very fast in the past 15 years. From my childhood, cell phones have evolved from the old school Nokia bricks that allowed texts, calls, and simple graphic games, to todays I-Phones that have higher computable capabilities than some computers. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). With so many people in today’s society with so much power and opportunity in the palm of their hands, we shouldn’t forget that “With great power comes great responsibility” –Voltaire.
The notion that the cell phone may one day become obsolete may never become reality. The concept of personal computing and communication (which is essentially what the smartphone is today) can never be defunct. Humans are built to connect with one another and we see instances of this throughout our lifetime. We are born into families, biological or not. We go to church to gather with our congregation. We’re sent to school to learn with other children our age. To eventually work with like-minded people, meet our spouses and have a family of our own. Our phones revolutionized even more with the bang of social media. The proliferation of social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram just to name a few, forever changed the dynamic of our social interactions. Through Instagram I can lie on the beaches of Cap Ferrat in the French Riviera with my cousin who visits there every year or I can open my Vine app and swim with tropical fishes in the Bahamas with my best friend Chelsi who loves the beach. In addition, cell phones enable us to interact with people we wouldn’t normally encounter. This not only permits us to learn from one other and the world around us, but we can help in times of need. In fact, during Hurricane Sandy our cell phones played an important role. In 2012 someone had the idea to create a Facebook page that bridged the gap between victims and good Samaritans
The smart phones have affected our culture in many possible ways which leads to increase in personal efficiency and communication. Even though, smartphone can become a tool for constant connection with the world; the smartphone also makes people disconnect with the world around them such as friends and family. As Zackary suggests that “The invention and rising popularity of the smartphone has completely transformed our culture of socialization and interaction.”(2015) Smartphones are very powerful tools that can allow people to use many functions such as phone, text, internet, apps, games, and social media and so on. Smartphones are readily available and so easy to use that people are less willing to interact with another people more than their smartphone. Smartphone becomes a necessity for many people of their life because of their usefulness. We constantly see people who are using their smartphone more often, which a
In the United States, 237.72 million people use a cell phone. 13% of cell owners pretended to be using their phone in order to avoid interacting with the people around them. 42% have had trouble doing something because they did not have their phone nearby. (Statistics from Pew Research Center.) We don’t think of electronics much. They’re just kinda… there. We wake up to them and fall asleep to them. We eat lunch with them and go to class with them. Most of us spend more time on our phone them we do with people.
Since 2008, the smartphone, a device that combines a normal cell phone with a computer, typically offering Internet access, data storage, e-mail capability, etc. all in your hand was deemed as ground-breaking technology and created one of the largest and most competitive markets in terms of technology to date. Their increased popularity continued to grow and today, it is very hard to encounter someone without a smartphone. These devices allow people to disconnect from reality and grant them access to the world as a whole. People use these devices to manage their daily routine, dictating what they should do and when they should do it.
-Albert Einstein (quote). Technology has become an important thing in are daily life. We can’t go out through the day without having to text someone, watch TV, or communicated in some way using some kind of communication devices doing the work for us. Twenty-five years ago, a phone was just a way to contact someone. Mobile phones have become one of the most common tools of communication for both young and old. Cellular devices have redefined relationships and social conduct, and transformed the daily lives of many individuals. Cell phones no longer function just as a communication device. Today it has many other uses.
When phones became available to the public they were not considered to be mobile in today’s sense of the word. They were available to have installed in an automobile, they were big and bulky, and they needed and consumed a lot of power to use. The phone networks would only support a few simultaneous conversations. Cell phones since then have made vast improvements in their efficiency, abilities, and size. The first handheld mobile phone wasn’t produce until 1973. The origin...
Despite the short amount of time since the introduction of the smartphone, the rapid development of the software and technology has had a tremendous effect on the everyday life in society today. The concept of communicating through a telephone was developed in the 1870s. Devices to transmit speech electrically were designed by Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell, but Bell's design was patented first. On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell achieved one of his greatest successes in the making of the telephone. This brought upon a major change in communication and gave leeway to the improvement of the telephone in the days to come (Bellis, 2013b). During the 20th century there were many innovations regarding the telephone. In 1973, the first call from a portable phone was made Martin Cooper, who was a Motorola researcher and executive at the time. Since its inception, the advancement of cell phones has been exponential (Bellis, 2013a). As a result, cell phones have changed how society works in today's world. Many people lack the insight of how cell phones, or in this case, smart phones, affect the people that use them. So the question is, how is the evolution of smart phones impacting our society?
Consider the impact of digital technologies on your daily life. The cell phone is one of many digital devices that have drastically changed people’s lives in a level of connectivity and productivity. You probably use your phone throughout the day to communicate with friends and business associates, look up information on the Web, check your friends’ Facebook statuses, snap photos and post them online, send e-mails, plan your evening, play games, watch movies, and listen to music.

In other words, more than a quarter of internet users in the world are currently relying on mobile devices to collect their information, especially through using their smart phones. Due to the informational convenience and portability, the ownership of smart phones has increased from 35% in 2011 to 56% in 2013 among the entire mobile device users. Meanwhile, it is also very easy to see many people use their smart phones for entertaining purposes such as gaming and social networking rather than collecting information as was shown on the statistics (Super Monitoring, 2013). Accordingly, it is very evident to find some critical disadvantages from using mobile devices excessively for entertaining themselves, especially among young children and student users. Therefore, this essay will focus on explaining the significant disadvantages of using smart phones or mobile devices regarding the possible health, social and financial issues.
