Duality of Dependence and Independence in Relationships

The key element to build up a strong relationship is the right composition of dependence and independence. With independence it brings responsibility and isolation also. Therefore, human beings desperately aspire for independence when surrounded by others but needs others to get rid of an isolated life. Talking about the delicate bonding among human beings Deborah Tannen said “We need to get close to each other- to have a sense of community, to feel we ’ re not alone in the world.- But we need to keep our distance from each other to preserve our independence, so others don ’ t impose on or engulf us. This duality reflects the human condition. We are individual –and social creatures. We need other people to survive, but we want – To- survive

She handled typical Indian themes and has successfully depicted the dilemmas and conflicts of women in their interactions and dealings with their partners. Through the aspects of kindness, tolerance and understanding of human relationships this novel can better be accepted by the readers. The despair and disappointments in the life of Jaya is clearly understood by the readers from the very beginning of the novel. She begins the novel by saying

Woman is the centre of her fictional world but this doesn’t mean that she is trying to show that man is the cause of all troubles. To understand this we need to identify and analyze both male and female psyche portrayed in her present novel.Not only Jaya, Mohan also feel lonely at some point of time in the novel when he did not get satisfactory co-operation from Jaya during the period of crisis. If Mohan is indifferent towards Jaya and could not understand her feelings then his family background is responsible. His father plays a vital role in building such a mentality in him that he feels a wife should be
