“To protect and manage the Nation's natural resources and cultural heritage; provide scientific and other information about those resources; and honor the trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated island communities” (U.S. Department of the Interior). This is the strong and proud mission statement of our nation’s Department of the Interior, which over looks over 500 million acres of U.S. land today. On March 3rd, 1849, on the eve of President Zachary Taylor's inauguration, a bill was passed to change the Nation’s internal affairs. The overall goal of this branch is to protect and manage our natural resources and cultural heritage. Throughout the years, this department has been lead by many great secretaries and today it is overseen by, republican Ryan Zinke. This department employs about 70,000 people, which includes scientist and professionals in resource management. In addition to the 70,00 people, there are also over 280,000 volunteers and 2,400 operating locations. The Department of the Interior has an annual budget of roughly 12 billion dollars and it also raises …show more content…
This department was put in place to oversee all of the land that was put under federal control. The work needed to be split so that our land could be preserved and used in the best ways possible. Something needed to help with the new settlement of America, and preserve the beauty of the nation. I feel that the intentions of the Department of the Interior were successful and it was worth the resources to put it into place. Since we have had this department, the United States has thrived with our national parks, access of water to the western areas (Bureau of Reclamation), economic growth because of natural resources, and support to Native Alaskans and Indian
To help the Native population to remain at peace with the incoming settlers, Congress enacted the Ordinance for the Regulation of Indian Affairs. This Ordinance established a division of Native populations by the Ohio River. Superintendents of Indian Affairs were established for each section, which supplied licenses to United States citizens to trade with the Native populations. Preceding the Constitution, in July of 1787, the United States government outlined the Northwest Ordinance. This was the first law of the new republic, showing the motive for those who wanted independence. The blueprint was provided to those settlers to obtain previously outlawed land outside of the Appalachians and Alleghenies by Britain. 15 same In 1801, President Jefferson stated the intentions of massive expansion of land within the United
This group contains the FBI, Energy, the NASA program, National Park Service, and Natural Resources. Once again, these are all very important groups however, there can be changes made to them. These changes don’t necessarily need to happen but there can be some benefits from them. “The NASA program administers NASA, pays for the National Science Foundation, and general science programs at the Department of Energy” (Document E). This allows out country to be one step ahead of other countries at all times.
The mission and values of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is up held with strong Constitutional values. Over the years since the FBI was created in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. As a progressive during this time period Bonaparte applied his philosophy to forming the FBI with several corps of agents. His thought was that these men should have expertise and not political connections. With the U.S. Constitution based on “federalism” a national government with jurisdiction over matters that cross boundaries, such as interstate and foreign affairs.
How does the creation of the Department of Homeland Security affect resources traditionally designated for local criminal justice organizations?
The little guys make up 3% of the federal budget, which is not very much. Clearly the government is not splitting the budget fairly. According to( Document E) the smallest of this category is the National Park Service. The people on earth are cutting down trees and lots of national parks for their own benefits. We need to take the 10% of the defence budget and add to the National Park Services. All together the National Park Service will have 10,000,000 dollars added to their budget, making a total of 3,010,000,000 that can benefit not only the country but maybe even the
The US government’s official role in Indian affairs began as far back as the Continental Congress (1786) when the Indian tribes were still considered independent nations with whom the settlers had to make treaties (Jackson 1). The purposes for these interactions were to buy land and to keep peace between encroaching settlers and natives.
‘The Laramie Project’ is a play written by Moises Kaufman about the murder of University of Wyoming gay student Matthew Shepard. It was interesting to see the outrage that this caused. The murder of Shepard was considered a hate crime and I agree with this. I can see the hostility that this murder caused because of the amount of questions it left. The scary thing is that we live in a culture where hate crimes exist. This murder was a reminder to the country that being “different” is something that people do not accept. This put “hate” crimes on the map and made people realize how serious hatred was. Being yourself can cause you to become murdered because someone else doesn’t agree with who you are. Hate crimes are a serious problem and Shepard was killed because he was homosexual. His murderers hated gays and that is the only reason a college student was murdered. A few observations I have that came out of this play was prejudice and the culture of hate.
In 1824, Secretary of War John C. Calhoun, created within the War Department the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Calhoun’s intentions for the bureau were to oversee treaty negotiations, manage Indian schools, and administer Indian trade, as well as handle all correspondence concerning the native people. Once established, the B.I.A. created a strong bond and a sense of hope for peace between the two communities in the beginning of their years, but it wasn’t until the mid-1930s when their relationship began to crumble. President Andrew Jackson viewed the tribes solely as obstacles in the way of the newly found American dream, which was to expand into the West, the direction for this movement was led by Manifest Destiny. The Indian Removal Act and other federal legislative initiatives sought to separate Indians from the path of settlement, and by 1840, the bureau and the American mil...
Maintaining large amounts of land has always been a goal for American government. During the 1830’s, vast amounts of Native Americans were being forcibly removed from their land so that the Americans could claim it as their own. With little defense compared to the Americans’ superior fire power, the Native Americans basically had no choice on whether or not they wanted to move west from their lands. One specific group of Native Americans that was unjustly removed from their lands was the Cherokee Indians. The Cherokee clashed with American government and did not willfully move out of their homelands in the southeastern parts of the United States. Although the Americans had substantial reasons why they wanted the Cherokee’s territory, they had no right to kick the Indians out of their homeland.
The "reservation" policy is said to be policy that shrunk Indian Territory to the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory and to Oklahoma. All of the Natives customs were threatened. "Indians used buffalo for food, clothing, fuel and even shelter" (Carnes and Garraty 456). As a result of the invasion Indians stopped hunting and many tribes became infuriated. Indian response classified them as either "treaty" Indians or "non-treaty" Indians. "Treaty" Indians were the ones that their chief agreed to comply with the "reservation" policy so they signed it and took it to its people. The "non- treaty" Indians were the ones who refused to sign the policy and as a result would go to war with the U.S Army. In order to protect the "treaty" Indians they created the Department of Interior which was responsible for keeping the national security. This Department includes what is called the Bureau of Indians that provides education services to Indians.
Life is colorful and adventurous, especially if you belong to the military life style. Belonging to the military community for nearly two decades has given me a different outlook on each place we end up. Outdoor enthusiasts, like most military families are, make Colorado Springs a desirable duty stationed. The perfect location Colorado Springs has. The weather offers many clear, beautiful days, allowing Colorado Springs to be a playground to enjoy most of the year round. Many points of interest and vacation sights that can be done in or around Colorado Springs make it a favorite in the military community.

The first area is the Department of Homeland Security’s mission. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created in 2002 by the Homeland Security Act. In 2003 the DHS started their operations. The DHS primary responsibilities and objectives includes prevention, protection, and response to issues that threaten national security. There are five core missions that define the DHS: Managing and securing our nation’s borders, strengthening security initiatives to help prevent terrorism, administering and enforcing the nation’s immigration laws, ensuring that the nation can rebound fast and or prevent disasters, and ensuring the internet is secure by instituting safeguards that protect the nation against cyber-attacks. The prose provides a thought-provoking insight into the process of discovering existential meaning for the first time. The two dimensions in the prose revealed the multifarious nature of discovery that can be intensely meaningful in ways that may be physical and intellectual. Literally it is a physical discovery arises from the exploration of the Canadian interior, emphasising the obstacles and impediments involved, applied especially to the unfamiliar ones. While the physical discovery of the untamed terrain is utilised as a metaphor of the intellectual discovery with wider spectrum of searching existential meaning, which can offer new understandings and renewed perceptions of ourselves. Hence the unpredictability and the diversity of discovery
