My interest in the dental industry happened by total happenstance. As a successful cosmetologist, I wasn 't planning on being in this industry nor did I have any interest dentistry initially. By someone 's advice I decided to take a chance on it. Upon my visit to a ten week dental assisting program, I met with an admissions counselor. She, also a cosmetologist, mentioned that she noticed a lot cosmetologists transitioning over into dentistry. That sparked an interest in me to look into other more reputable schools. I thought about the two industries and how much they have in common. Things like dentistry being skill-based and having an aspect of art. There is definitely a certain level of hand skills that you have to have, as well as working with people and bringing up someone’s self-esteem. Every year there is a new system, machine, or dental material that you could use. Dentistry gives you the chance to learn and expand the services you can offer in your practice. You truly become a lifelong learner. This is something that is rather important to me. I remember going to my dental externship and seeing the dentists Cerec, a crown milling unit. I was fascinated by the way that it could take a block and mill it into a crown just from a few scans the dentist took. That cut out lab fees and allowed for the dentist to produce same day crowns. I remember thinking I was made for this industry. I used to get on the dentist’s nerves because, I was always asking questions. My head would always be in his way during procedures because I was so curious about what was going on. He told me dental assistants like me need to go to dental school.
