Dental Specialties
What do you think of when you hear dental specialties? I think of a variety of different dental fields that provide tons of oral health care for patients. There are seven different specialties in the dental field. Those specialties are Endodontic, General dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral surgery, Orthodontics, and Pediatric. In my essay I will be talking about the seven different specialties and what they consist of.
Endodontic is one of the seven specialties, this specialty deals with root canal therapy and anything that deals with roots in the oral cavity and also your dental pulp. Root canal therapy is one of the most common procedures. If dental pulp becomes injured, endodontic treatment is required to

save the tooth. Like General Dentistry and other specialties are all about saving your teeth. General Dentistry is actually a dentist for patients of all ages.
The dentist has full responsibility for diagnosing patients and treatment planning to meet the patient's needs. There are 17 procedures that general dentistry provides for example Sealants, Crowns and bridges, Dental implants, Dentures, Restorative care and many more.
This leads me to my next specialty prosthodontics. Prosthodontics deals with 6 procedures they are crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays, onlays and partial dentures. Prosthodontics care is provided by both General dentists and prosthodontics specialists.
The difference between Prosthodontics and Periodontics is that Prosthodontics specializes in replacing any damaged tooth structure, hard and soft tissues of the mouth and missing teeth. A Periodontitis is a dentist who specializes in the prevention and treatment and diagnosis of periodontal disease. Periodontics deals with numerous amounts of patients with periodontal disease. This disease affects your gums and jaw bone, which leads to my next specialty oral surgery.
Oral surgery focuses on surgical diagnosis, treatment of diseases and anything related to the face, mouth, teeth and the jaw that are at risk. If patient has wisdom teeth that have become impacted, oral surgery comes in use and the doctor will remove
them. Orthodontics does treatment that moves teeth that are crowded and don’t fit together the right way which braces are commonly used. In other situations they supply you with head gear which helps with overbites and under bites. In the end they may leave you with a retainer which still keeps your teeth aligned appropriately but isn’t permanent. Other times they apply a permanent retainer to keep your teeth aligned if your wisdom teeth are still in and are in need of being extracted. Reason being is because teeth like to move; once you have your wisdom teeth taken out it will push your teeth in many different directions. Usually the start of your child’s oral care begins in Pediatrics. Pediatrics deals with children, infants and adolescents. They usually have a certain age limit that ranges between birth and up to 18 years old. Pediatrics is the name of the specific field and specialty. A pediatrician is the name of the doctor which will examine your baby to make sure he/she is healthy and fine. All of these specialties do amazing things for us and our oral care. In conclusion, I think it takes a lot of dedication and skill to accomplish what these doctors have accomplished. Any dentist or specialist will work hard to better our needs for oral care and our health. You can also reassure that any specialists you see has excellent knowledge and experience.
According to the American Dental Association, gum disease, also referred to as periodontal disease, occurs when the tissues that support and surround your teeth become infected. Many people are unaware they even have gum disease, because it isn’t a painful disease. Periodontal disease is caused by a film of sticky bacteria called plaque forming on the teeth.
They then should look over the charts at the patient’s situation with their teeth and see what medical treatment they need. They then bring the patient in and perform the treatment. Lastly, they charge the patient for the certain treatments, like the cleaning, and then for say a filling, they will charge them separately, and then the patient will leave. Soon after, they will start all over again. Furthermore, there are a lot of skills required to be a Dental Hygienist, but yet simple ones.

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry which involves the prevention and correction of irregularities in the teeth. The ones who practice orthodontics and specialize the field are called orthodontists. An orthodontist has specialized and in depth knowledge about the human teeth and jaws. Providing treatment for people who have problems associated with their teeth and jaws has been their goal. The treatment provided will be varied from person to person depending on their ailment. The orthodontists make sure that our teeth and jaws are in good condition.

Assisting the dentist in everything from patient relations to a wide variety of dental treatments and procedures.
To get an overview of other specialties I shadowed an implant specialist and an endodontist, where the dentist’s team working skills and the essential role of dental nurses became emphasised, in order to streamline the increasingly complex
Another huge factor that plays into both occupations is experience. No matter what, they both require long years of schooling a residency, but the older you are in the profession means the more experience under your belt. This why many orthodontists and dentists retire at an older age.they spend so much time in school and in residency to gain the experience they feel they need After the required years of college, which is eight, dentists will already have four years of experience, and orthodontists will have

The profession is dramatically expanding in science and technology to lead a better level of artistry and standard-based practice. Although, it is not in high demand, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, it should only increase by 26,000 thousand jobs from 2016 to 2026 which is about 17 percent. As long as oral health is getting linked to overall health, research will continue and service will be provided to the population as it ages. Dentist are specialized to "diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth" (Bureau of Labor and Statistics). Their duties effects how their work environment is shaped too. Most dentists usually "work alone or with a small staff. (…), some work for more established dentists" (Bureau of Labor and Statistics). This is very common in both private and public practices throughout the nation. The average salary for a general dentist is 158, 310 dollars a year, which is about 78 dollars an hour if they worked full time (Bureau of Labor and Statistics). Majority of the time dentist won't work full time if they are a public practice because they usually are partnering with another dentist. This field of work requires an abundance of education, skill, patience and practice which means class sizes in dental programs need to be small enough for teachers to successfully teach every student,

I decided to do my research report on dentistry because it is a perfect blend of science and art. It is a science in that you must fully comprehend on the different types of diagnostic and procedures you are doing. It is an art in that you are constantly working with your hands to create a beautiful smile. The impact you make on helping a person achieve an impeccable smile is not one to compare with materialistic things like money or cars.
