Dental Hygienists I have been wanting to be a dental hygienist for a while now. I have been researching in this career and deciding where I want to go to college. After finding out more details about this career, it has really made me want to pursue this career. I’ve decided that I do not want to leave far from home for college, so I will be staying at home until I finish college. After researching the career of a dental hygienist, I have decided to pursue this career. The daily tasks of a dental hygienist are concerning. They complete tasks similar to a dentist, because customers make appointments to receive their teeth health needs. For example, they …show more content…
clean teeth, take X-rays, and apply numbing agents to gums (“Task List” 1). I believe I would be able to handle these tasks very well. Learning and performing these tasks would be easy for me. Cleaning patients teeth would be something I could do and would enjoy doing. The only challenging thing I would have to do is X-rays, but it just takes time and practice. In order to be a good worker, one has to follow certain work activities. They would have to schedule work and activities for patients. They would need to learn to control machines and process them. They would need to inspect equipment, structures, and materials (“Common Work Activities”1). I think I could easily do these work activities. I could be very good at scheduling, because I would just have to be organized. I would need practice for me to learn how to control machines and work with equipment. The working conditions in the dental office are simple. This job requires working inside all day. They need to wear protective attire. They have to wear masks, gloves, and glasses. One needs to be in awkward positions to get to certain teeth (“Working Conditions” 1). I think I will be able to adapt to these working conditions. It is simple to work inside all day. I would be able to wear protective gear. It may be a little challenging to reach over some patients to perform what needs to be done to their teeth. Dental Hygienists have many physical demands.
They are required to bend and twist their bodies around patients. They need to repeat the same movements and do the same things to patients. They need hands to control and feel objects in their patient's mouth (“Physical Demands” 1). I think these demands would fit me perfectly. I would be able to twist my body to get to a certain tooth. I would be able to repeat the same things, because I would get better at things the more I did them. I would just need to learn how to properly hold the dental tools and control them. The skills and abilities of a dental hygienist are everyday skills. They need to know how to communicate with people and speak clearly. They need to know how to problem solve until they have fixed the patient’s need. They have to be able to work with people and find ways to help (“Skills and Abilities” 1). I believe I will be able to accomplish these abilities, because I have a job it helps me practice these communication skills. I am very good at problem solving, so that could not be a problem with me. I also enjoy working with people and trying to help …show more content…
them. To be a dental hygienist, they need to take a couple classes. They need to take biology to study the human body. They need to take sales and marketing to use methods for selling products. They will also need psychology to be good with people (“Knowledge” 1). I think I could get this knowledge easily. I could take these classes in high school. I took biology my freshman year and I was very good at it. The only class that might be challenging for me is sales and marketing, because I am not much of a sales person. There are many ways to prepare to be a dental hygienist.
One needs their high school diploma to get into college. After they receive their diploma, they have to go to a two-year college to receive their associate’s degree. Finally, they will need to pass the state licensing program (“Preparation” 1). I believe I can accomplish all of these things if I study hard. I will need to work hard to get my high school diploma. I will then move onto college for two years to receive my associate's degree. I will only need to pass the state licensing program and in order to do that, I will need to study a lot. By taking certain high school classes, it could help them become a dental hygienist. They need to take anatomy to learn more about the human body parts. They need to take keyboarding to learn how to use technology better. Health education is a great class to take, because it teaches a lot about health (“Helpful High School Courses” 1). I could easily take these classes in high school. I can take anatomy next year, even though it is a challenge. I took health education my freshman year and I can handle the things the class
teaches. Most people that work as a dental hygienist make a good amount of money a year. 25% of dental hygienists make $63,020 every year. The middle amount or average hygienist makes $69,050 every year. The highest amount they make a year is $75,040 every year (“Wages” 1). I think since I will be living in Missouri, this is perfect for me. I will be able to raise a family and live off of my wages. For the amount of time in college, this is plenty of money for me to pay off college and still manage to live off of it. The major employers for a dental hygienist work in a private dental office. The career growth in this job are increasing rapidly. The places that I would plan on living is around Farmington, Missouri. Growth for this location is also increasing (“Employment and Outlook” 1). My personal opinion about these opportunities is wonderful. This can help me get a job easily and locally. I would be able to live close to work and still be making enough money to support my family. The people in the same dental office have to share the same interests and values. They need to share the same social interests to get along at work. If they have the same realistic interests, they will be able to share things about each other. It is important to consider relationships and independence important, because one would want to be good friends with their co-workers (“Interests and Values”1). It would be very important to me to share these values with other co-workers. If we share the same interests, then I would be able to have friends at work. It is important to have friends at work so I can also enjoy my job. After researching the career of a dental hygienist, I have decided to pursue this career. I have chosen this career, because I have talked to a family friend about her job and it sounds like something I would absolutely love to do for my career. From what I have already researched, I realized this is something I can really do. I really like the job itself, but I wanted to do something health field related, and this just seems to be the right one. I will continue to find more information about a dental hygienist and pursue in this field.
I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. The first honest reason I was gravitated to dental hygiene was because of the salary. I didn’t really know what Dental Hygienist actually did until I did some research.
(To have a real insight into the daily duties of a dentist, I set aside a period of time last summer where I could acquire some work experience.) I spent 2 weeks at a local general practice offering both private and NHS treatment. I witnessed the close relationships to which the dentist had created with his patients, personally I find meeting and working with new people on a daily basis provides quite a fun stimulating aspect to this career. Whilst shadowing my dentist I witnessed a number of complex procedures such as a dislodged wisdom tooth extraction and many root canal fillings. My experience at this practice showed me that dentistry is a career that is heavily dependent on dentist-patient interactions, alongside other collaborating staff to ensure the correct treatment is given in an efficient and effective manner. I also spent a week at my orthodontist, it was here that it became apparent to me the real extent to which dentistry

("Dental Hygienist") When it comes to working on the job, the hours of work depend on you, the more you want to work you are happy to do what you like. Most dental hygienists work in multiple dentist offices and come in on the days that they want to work on. Also as a dental hygienist you’re not suck working in a dentist office for the rest of your life you may be employed to provide dental hygiene services for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and public health clinics. ("Dental Hygienist") Which gives variety on the people you work on and places you work at something new every day, that’s something I like I dislike sticking to the same today every day I enjoy something new each day. As stated by Geshelin “Not all dentists work at a dental office some do things such as teaching, selling dental products, or working in product research and testing”. (“Geshelin, Hanna”) Having this option in my life would be a great advantage because the point of life is to enjoy it not just going to work to pay bills until you die. Having the option of creating your own schedule is a huge plus for this job because you can work whenever you like. You set up the appointments and take control of your work life. Having the extra time to spend with your family in the future and go on vacations would be ideal for anyone's lifestyle. You can live your life and pick your own schedule and make yourself be in control. It is nice to have great flexibility in determining the number of hours per week you choose to work in your life, so why live through it working hard and not having vacations or days off when you want unlike you would be able to if you were a dental hygienist. With this opportunity, relaxation can be achieved on any day of the week you would like. Also with all this flexibility I could continue going to school and
Having shadowed a dental hygienist prior to that of a dental assistant I didn’t know what to expect their job to be. Although I did assume a dental assistant’s job consisted of handing instruments to the doctor during the various procedures so I was surprised to see just how many responsibilities they have. Each dental clinic has different expectations of what they require their dental assistant to do in my shadowing experience they were responsible for: preparing the room prior to the patients arrival, greeting the patient upon arrival and inviting them into the operation room, confirming dental history with the patient, briefing them on the procedure they are about to have and what to expect, answering the clients questions to the best of their abilities, assisting the doctor in the procedure and aiding with any tasks required of you, when the patient is ready to leave helping them to look presentable and explaining what to expect after that kind of procedure, updating and verifying dental records, and sanitizing and sterilization of the room and all instruments after departure of
A dentist has a lot of duties and demands to meet during a typical working day. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most dentists give directions on how to keep teeth in good shape so they won’t negatively affect the mouth. General dentists also fill cavities, remove teeth, straighten the teeth by applying braces, and repair cracks (BLS, what they do). Dr. Basem Airood, who is the owner of OC Smile Dental in Orange County, said that besides working on patients’ mouths, he always updates the tools he uses and buys new equipment and supplies that he needs in his work. Dr. Airood stated that part of his job requires him to “employ and supervise dental assistants and hygienists because without them, half of the work can’t be done”.

Ever since my childhood I have been passionate to make remarkable contribution in improving mankind and making earth a better place to live for everybody. Dentistry will prove to be one of the very important steps in achieving my goal. I am from a highly educated middle class Indian family. Since my childhood, I always wanted to be a health professional and my dad encouraged me a lot. I remember when I was in 6th grade my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and why? I replied “A Dentist because it is the job mixed with ART, SCIENCE and MEDICINE.” I still remember the look on her face, she was surprised, may be because she never expected such kind of reply from young boy. I started working towards my goal, after scoring good marks in 10th grade, I worked hard for two years in medical subjects and cracked my State Common Entrance Exam and got admission in well renowned Dental Institute of my state. I completed my Bachelor’s (BDS) in March 2014 from NTR University of health sciences which is an esteemed university all over India.
