Despite the success, Paradise Theatre was another theme album written by DeYoung and furthered the tension with the band (Styx). The bands manager recalled, “I remember Tommy coming into my room in Tokyo and saying, ‘Please, for God sake, lets not do another concept album. We need some rock ‘n’ roll.’” Unannounced to the band, Dennis was already working on another concept album, Kilroy was Here, a story of a future where rock & roll was outlawed. Kilroy was Here was also a rebuttal to accusations made by a California religious group that the band backward-masked satanic messages in their song Snowblind …show more content…
Tommy was touring with the band Damn Yankees that included Ted Nugent. During shows, Shaw and Ted would make fun of DeYoung’s song “Babe” resulting in Shaws guitar getting smashed on stage. Along their tours, Styx and Damn Yankees encountered each other. For the first time since 1984, Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw met together and talked about tension between each other. In late 1990, Styx, once again, disbanded. The band reunited again in 1995 except for drummer John Panozzo who was suffering from health problems and later passes away (Styx). The tour was halted until after the funeral. Todd Sucherman (Styx), who was filling in during Johns absents, became the permanent replacement for John. As Styx began work with their new album, Dennis had begun to develop light sickness and sensitivity to heat. Styx released Brave New World in 1999 featuring the original band line-up plus Todd. As the band went on tour Dennis’ conditions grew worst. James Young and Tommy Shaw decided that the tour would go on whether or not Dennis was going to join them.
