The Advantages of a Democracy
Democracy is a system of gevernment by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. Meaning democracy is giving the power to the people and the rights they deserve. In an autocratic nation, the people living there do not get any of the advantages that democratic nations do. Robert Dahl's essay Why Democracy? talks about why we should support democracy and its advantages for the country. Democracy is what keeps the peace in societies, it gives the people power to do whatever they desire. It gives them the freedom that humans need to live a happy and peaceful life. "Everyone, or nearly everyone, wants certain things: survival, food, shelter, health, love, respect, security, family, friends... The specific pattern of your wants will probably differ from the specific pattern of another's" (Dahl 102). Everyone is going to have a different opinion or idea from somebody else; democracy gives the freedom to let anybody believe what they want. Having the freedom to believe, do, or have a career in anything, is something people take for granted now a days. People in other countries are not quite as fortunate to have their own interests. They are generally forced by their political leader to do or believe in something. Having democracy protect the citizens rights to have their own interest is vital in a country. Freedom is what keeps people happy and aligned with their true nature. In autocratic nations like North Korea, the people there are not happy at all. Now America is not the greatest example of a prosperous country, considering it is trillions of dollars in debt, although, it is still the richest large country. Unlike non democratic countries, democracies tend to educate their people, meaning a higher educated workforce is helpful for economic growth. A disadvantage of an autocratic government is that if the leader is badly misguided, they can cause major damage to their economic system. Most democratic countries have market economies; countries with market economies tend to prosper the most. In today's age, being a prosperous country is very rewarding and can power your country to become one of the more powerful countries in the world.
