This experience was the most instrumental in my personal growth throughout my undergraduate career. I have always considered myself to have characteristics of a leader, but taking on so many leadership roles in Delta Sigma Theta turned those disjointed characteristics into a cohesive reality. Upon becoming member of Delta Sigma Theta, I was balancing being a full time student, working over 40 hours week, volunteer work, and other extracurriculars. Rather than taking a backseat in the chapter, I decided to put my talents to use in every way that I saw fit. I learned a great deal about teamwork, time management, and accomplishing goals regardless of obstacles. I also had the experience of serving the community on a regular basis. I was able to
create scholarships for incoming college students, tutor and mentor, and create programs to promote and educate about healthcare in the Athens-Clarke County area. Understanding that my time, effort, and commitment were to make impacts on the lives of my shared community members was rewarding and humbling. I will continue to implement the lessons learned through this experience, and my passion for serving the community through my career as a physician and beyond.

San Joaquin Memorial has had a significant impact on my leadership and service experiences in my life. During my time at SJM, I have gotten the chance to take part in leading sports teams. I was the captain of my JV basketball and volleyball teams my freshman year and I helped lead us to a successful season filled with hard work and integrity. Through my time as captain for my teams, I learned that being a leader requires a great amount of service to those who you're leading. Like most women, becoming a woman means learning how to take care of their selves on their own, defining who you are for yourself, who you want to be, having future goals set, and developing tools to face the world. Fortunately, I have learned how to apply these skills during my wonderful experience in the 2014 Delta Cotillion. This event has made a remarkable turning point in my life because it was the biggest and most affectionate assembly any girl could ever be in and it was also teaching me to know where and how I wanted to pursue my dreams. By attending all rehearsals and participating in all choral performances, I have become extremely dedicated to the entire choral program at my school. I never knew I would become president of the entire choral program, and I never knew how much authority I would be given, as a result. Throughout Leading as a Way of Serving, there were many lessons that I experienced and learned. By completing reading assignments, writing papers, participating in class discussions, and attending the class retreat, there were many opportunities to learn course content as well as realizing new aspects about myself. At the beginning of the semester, I did not know that I would be learning so much and that I could retain so many new life lessons in such a short amount of time.
I also, joined FBLA which have been a very influential program that helped me gain leadership. FBLA has allowed me to attend many business programs at different Universities, which gave me an experience of a lifetime. Today I would say that I have learned many things through FBLA and now I proud to say I am the President of the program. Towards the end of each year many students, such as myself, stayed back to assist the teachers with cleaning their classrooms. Alongside with gaining volunteer hours at school, I am a very busy person within my community. Whether my position taken in my neighborhood was to tutor younger children or participate in local clean ups, I’ve have more than enough room to exercise my leadership abilities. Still, I had more time to become a member of A.S.C.E.N.D. This program was a pre-sorority for young African American women and allowed many young ladies to participate within their community. This year in SGA, I have gained new leadership skills and I have used them to help Willard High School become a better place. I have learned to to do new things and reach certain goals with new people. The impact we have on the school has really opened my eyes to how different ideas can lead to great things. There are several things I have helped with, whether that being filming videos, setting up for the dances, helping with the assemblies, etc. My greatest success in SGA this year was being able to step out of my comfort zone, because I am not usually a person to take charge, but I have been able to help others get things done and reach the goals we were trying to reach such as advertising events on social media, making videos for spirit weeks, and taking pictures at all of the events that we run.
Most of my community service time was allotted towards assisting a group specialized in helping autistic children. The Groden Center has graciously allowed me to help in some of their programs. Lending my help with the Special Olympics, winter parties, and arts and crafts activities, I was able to put an effort towards making sure things went smoothly. One long term service I provided with the allowance of the Groden Center was my assistance with the Speech and Language Pathologist worker. Every Friday for a set amount of weeks, I collected data analyzing autistic children’s growth with language development, organized files, and worked with spreadsheets. My help with this allowed for the work needed to be done each week to be less of a hassle to complete. On the other hand, I have done side community service tasks such as assisting in barn maintenance, giving tours to incoming eighth graders, and working with the URI Master Gardeners. All the experiences I have chosen to help build my community service transcript have been for the good of the community rather than to impress a university. I take pride in helping my community with activities I care about and know I would obtain lifelong skills and characteristics based on the responsibilities I assist in. In order to fulfill the LHS requirements for community service, I served my 40 hours in an elementary school. There I assisted kids with their work and had the privilege to get to meet every single individual. I interacted more with the teacher and helped her out with the kids who needed that extra help with either their reading or other classwork they have not accomplished. It was exciting and educational because I got to learn new things everytime I went. There were times where I gave my full attention to just that one kid who was really struggling to catch up to his other classmates. Yes, at times it was difficult to get certain kid’s attention but t the end of the day I accomplished my goal and felt proud of myself
At Saint Pius X, I serve as a teen youth group leader. This experience has been life changing as it has helped develop me into the person I am today. Through my years as a teen leader, I have learned how to cooperate with others, plan events, and be held accountable. As a leader of this group, my job is to lead or youth group nights. Furthermore, we have monthly leadership meeting, where we plan what will come at the next youth group. On the leadership team, I’m one of two leaders who is a senior. Therefore, leading my other team members, that are also on the leadership, to look up to me. One specific leadership event that I participated in was a retreat where I was a middle school group leader. Consequently, the impact this event had on me was monumental.

I have gained friendships, new stores of knowledge, empathy through shared experiences, listening and relating to people from various walks of life. I feel very fortunate to have served in all the areas of the community that I have served. The demographic I have worked with taught me to have understanding, flexible communication, listen, relate, and consort with people from all walks of life without pre-judgment which contributes to me being a nurturing, caring, and contributing member of humanity.
