The world today is filled today with multiple types of people, but no one like Victor Frankenstein’s creature. If Frankenstein's creature existed in modern times he would have a difficult time fitting in and adapting because of his upbringing, appearance, and his lack of social experience.
Frankenstein's creature has not been raised the same way a typical person is. Frankenstein creates his creature for all the wrong reasons. He creatures his creature with hopes to "'banish illness from the human fame and render man invulnerable to any but violent death' and before its completion, imagines his monster as representing human perfectibility" (A3 2). Frankenstein constructed his creature in a nonconventional way, using parts "from nonhuman animal remains from a slaughterhouse" (Petsche 1). The fact that he was constructed from nonhuman parts shows that he does not look like a normal human being. As soon as Frankenstein sees his creation, he rushes out of his laboratory because he was repulsed by the monster's dull yellow eyes and yellow skin (Shelley 85). Frankenstein then leaves his creation simply because of physical judgements (a4 1). Frankenstein spends two years building this creation to leave it because it is looks horrid. The creature's first interaction with a human was that of rejection. The creature also faces rejection because of his looks when he approaches William. When William sees the creature, he cries out "monster! Ugly wretch! You wish to eat me, and tear me to pieces" (Petsche 1). Because of this rejection, the creature strangles and kills William. The major theme in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is the great emphasis placed on appearance and acceptance in society. In modern society as well as in the society of Frankenstein, people judge one solely on their appearance. Social prejudice is often founded on looks, whether it is the color of one's skin, the clothes that one wears and even the way a person carries himself or herself. People make instant judgments based on these social prejudices. This perception based on appearance determines the behavior towards the person. In Frankenstein, the society of that time is similar to our own today. It is an appearance-based society, and this topic is brought to the limelight by the hideous figure of Victor Frankenstein's monster to a common human being. Every human in society wants to be accepted in an intellectual way, regardless of his or her physical appearance.
We again view his ignorance and irresponsibility when after spending two years of work on his creature he disowns and abandons the creature. He runs out of the room after seeing the creature come to life. He fled the room because he thought the creature was so hideous, even though he had chosen all the best body parts for its creation. When Frankenstein returns to the house when he “became assured that my enemy had indeed fled, I clapped my hands for joy”(55). Even after all his work he is ecstatic that this horrible beast has left him.
Victor Frankenstein and the others who have encountered the creature all recoiled in horror at the mere sight of him. He is described by Victor: “His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful!—Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun white sockets in which they were set, his shriveled complexion, and straight black lips” (Shelley, 35). Even his creator shuns him based solely on his looks. Another attribute of the creature that makes him monstrous is his thirst for revenge against Victor and the hateful attitude he develops toward humans throughout the book. While he has not developed the emotional intelligence and experience of other human beings, he has learned to differentiate between right and wrong. Therefore, the murders he has committed are taken into consideration when labeling the creature as a monster. If anything, as I will later demonstrate, the creature is an antihero. Many of which have put their own spin to the horror novel, especially the character of the creature that remains one of the most recognized icons in horror fiction. However, there have been critics whom argue modern versions and variations have lost the horror and passion that is an essential to the creature. The start of the Creature is bound to one book. However, public impression of the Creature has changed severely since the publication of the original novel, leading to diverse styles and plot lines in its diverse film adaptations. People’s impression of the Creature have become so twisted and turned by time and decades of false film posters and article titles that most use the name “Frankenstein” to refer to the Creature itself, rather than the scientist who created him! It’s a shame! An understanding of literary history is a necessity to comprehend the truth of the Creature’s tragic history and how decades of film adaptations changed him into the hulking beast most people know him as today.

Claudia Black, author of the article “Understanding the Pain of Abandonment,” says that children depend on their parents to provide a safe environment for children to grow, and that when the parents do not provide that environment for their children, the children can grow up believing that the world is an unsafe place, that people can not be trusted, and that they do not deserve approval and comfort. The creature exhibits all of these symptoms and emotions. After the creature saves a little girl from drowning, he is attacked by her father and wounded. “This was the reward for my benevolence! [...] Inflamed by pain, I vowed eternal hatred and vengeance to all mankind” (Shelley 135). After being betrayed multiple times by humanity and the people that he felt like he was close to, the creature is tired of being deserted and attacked for just being himself, so he decides not to trust humanity anymore and to do things that make him succeed, even if those actions hurt the people around him. “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelly explores the concept of the body, life, ‘the self’ and most of importantly humanity, which is repeatedly questioned throughout the novel. The definition of humanity is the quality of being humane or in other words someone that can feel or possess compassion. Despite all the facts against the “monster” in “Frankenstein” he is indeed what one would consider being human. Humanity isn’t just about ones physical appearance but also includes intellect and emotion. Some people argue that the “monster” is not a human for he was not a creature that was born from “God” or from a human body. That being said, the “monster” is not only able to speak different languages, he can also show empathy - one of many distinct traits that set humans apart from the animals. Both the “monster” and his creator, Victor, hold anger and feel a sense of suffering throughout the novel. Victor is a good person with good intentions just like most individuals, but makes the mistake of getting swept up into his passion of science and without thinking of the consequences he creates a “monster”. After completing his science project, he attempts to move forward with his life, however his past – i.e., the “monster” continues to follow and someone haunt him. While one shouldn’t fault or place blame on Frankenstein for his mistakes, you also can’t help but feel somewhat sympathetic for the creature. Victor’s monster was created using old human parts, chemicals, and a “spark.” Victor wanted to create this monster in order to benefit mankind, and for the purpose of playing God. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or; The Modern Prometheus, published in 1818, is a product of its time. Written in a world of social, political, scientific and economic upheaval it highlights human desire to uncover the scientific secrets of our universe, yet also confirms the importance of emotions and individual relationships that define us as human, in contrast to the monstrous. Here we question what is meant by the terms ‘human’ and ‘monstrous’ as defined by the novel. Yet to fully understand how Frankenstein defines these terms we must look to the etymology of them. The novel however, defines the terms through its main characters, through the themes of language, nature versus nurture, forbidden knowledge, and the doppelganger motif. Shelley also shows us, in Frankenstein, that although juxtaposing terms, the monstrous being everything human is not, they are also intertwined, in that you can not have one without the other. There is also an overwhelming desire to know the monstrous, if only temporarily and this calls into question the influence the monstrous has on the human definition.
For moviegoers Frankenstein’s Monster is a green, shambling corpse, with its stitched together construction held together by two bolts on its neck, as it moans and groans inhumanly. A deeper look into the actual book by Mary Shelly, Frankenstein Or, The Modern Prometheus, however, shows a far more terrifying visage: something that’s almost, but not quite, human. A being that, while “about eight feet in height”, still had a soul that “glowed with love and humanity” at birth, which causes it’s transformation into a serial killer to be far more chilling (Shelly 100). The source of the Monster, and how it differs from other characters, is what obviously creates this irreconcilable gap from the human characters. Contextually, during the writing of Frankenstein, industrialization swept through Mary Shelly’s Great Britain. The change in society caused by industrialization can be seen in the work as a whole. Thus it is clear Frankenstein argues that the loss of originality in an industrialized society leads to dehumanization and alienation, as exemplified in the manufactured Monster.
