Main political causes for deforestation in Indonesia:
There are four main types of political causes for deforestation in Indonesia; Governmental, Economical, and international influence and policies.
Governmental:
The government in Indonesia is a system where a group of people organize the state of Indonesia. The governmental causation of deforestation in Indonesia mostly includes the Swidden agriculture and slash and burn which are highly destructive to the forest. The slash and burn in Indonesia or Swidden agriculture is a method used where farmers would cut down part of the vegetation in the area and set fire it to clear areas of land to be used for farming such as palm oil. The fire used is very unstable and can easily get out of hand.

Since poor people are in need of food, money and support they would lean in to destroying the plantation in the area to make room to create farms to support them and use the wood gathered to be able to sustain for themselves. In order to prevent this however the government would erect policies that would alleviate poverty and have policies such as creating more roads and dams that may at first may damage the environment but would in the end stop the people in poverty to think of other ways of surviving besides cutting down trees and making farms. In short term however many of these policies such as the construction of more roads and dams can affect the environment negatively. In order to build more the government would have to lead in to more deforestation to create space for the construction. These big construction plans can cause a big change in the ecological cycle and cause deforestation to continue even after these construction plans.
Indonesia is also in constant pressure to keep Indonesia’s economy to be stable and improve. Without proper funding it may be difficult for Indonesia to keep up with the constant economic problems Indonesia face. Therefore, the government are forced to look into deforestation to be able to get proper funding, creating policies such as stumpage fees, log export taxes and clearings for agriculture.
The main reason deforestation happens, is because of farming. They need to clear out land in order to plant crops and vegetables. Another loss from deforestation is that many animals lose their habitat. The loss of animals habitats will lead to migration, or possibly even extinction. And when this happens this will ruin the food chains which will affect even more animals.
Deforestation is the clearing of a forest and/or cutting down of trees for human benefits such as agriculture, wood exports, etc. Deforestation is the cause of numerous environmental impacts such as habitat loss, flooding and soil erosion. It can also cause climate change, by reducing the amount of rainfall and changing the amount of sunlight reflected from Earth’s surface and increases the risk of forest . Tree growth is important for biodiversity because they absorb carbon dioxide which is a harmful greenhouse gas . However, since deforestation reduces natural carbon sinks, it disrupts the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air causing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air to increase. This poses a serious threat since carbon dioxide traps the sun’s heat and radiated light inside the earth’s atmosphere. So, with the increase in carbon dioxide more heat is trapped and thus adding to the effects of global warming. Among the many places where deforestation takes place, Amazon seems to be one of the most affected ones. More than 20 percent of it is already gone, and much more of it is severely threatened due to deforestation . It is estimated that the Amazon alone is vanishing at a rate of 20,000 square miles a year .
This practice is a quick and economically inexpensive method or clearing land for grazing or raising crops. It is accomplished by cutting down all the trees and brush in an area, as fast as possible (Slash) and then setting fire to the area, to get rid of all of the mess (Burn). It has proved to be a quite efficient way to pointlessly destroy the forest, because the land shortly becomes arid and barren without the trees there to maintain it's former richness. This is compounded by the lack of crop-rotation, which only speeds up the process of dry des...
In this novel, the city Malawi where William lived, they faced the struggle of deforestation. This caused many problems and conflicts for the people who lived there. The government claimed to be cutting down the trees to make desks for local schools, but they never did. During the time when the book was written, investors would cut down trees in Malawi to make fields to plant more tobacco. Even at such a young age, William was able to realize how important of a situation this is and says “Few people realize this, but cutting down trees is one of the things that keeps us Malawians poor.” (Kamkwamba, page 82 ). Malawi used to be covered heavily in forests, but according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, scientists have recently come to the conclusion that forests now only cover 34.4% of Malawi. This just goes to show that deforestation can still have a huge impact, even in smaller countries within
Deforestation is a widely used term, but one with different meanings. Disturbance deforestation refers to all man made disturbances that alter a forest, these are the most common. This argumentative essay discusses the positive and negative aspects of deforestation. In the first part of the essay the pro arguments of deforestation will be discussed. For example, the issue of Global population and how forests are being used, land use and the ways forests contribute, wood use, forest growth, destruction and the reasons for cutting down the trees. The second half of the essay will cover the issues that are harmful to the environment because of deforestation. Many environmental issues take place everyday; a big question that arises, is if the global economy will ever finds middle on the issue of forest thinning. If deforestation was used only in the most crucial of times, the world might become a better place.
General Information: First off, deforestation is the clearing of forests or areas with trees to be converted into something else after. There are a few different ways forests are cleared. Clear cutting is simply removing everything in sight. Patch cutting is the removal of trees in specified patches. Strip cutting is removing trees in selected strips. The most environmentally friendly method is known as selective cutting. This is the removal of only selected trees, leaving the others un-harmed. The technique used most during deforestation is the slash and burn technique. This uses the basic cutting method of clear cutting, but afterwards everything that remains is burned to ash.
Countries such as Brazil and Indonesia have been greatly affected by deforestation with well over two million hectares of naturally forested land now rendered barren (See appendix 1).
Deforestation has accumulated many multifaceted controversies over time. The main one, however, is the impact deforestation has on water flow. People have different perceptions on how deforestation affects the flow of water, this lead to a controversy between conservationists and a group of theorists. Many years ago, water was used as a way for almost all the mills to function. Changes in the ecosystem depend on the rate and extent of deforestation and determines how drastic the changes will be.
In the article “ The Sumatran Rainforest Will Mostly Disappear Within 20 Years” John Vidal argues on how deforestation will cause consequences within twenty years. John Vidal claims,” In only a few years, logging and agribusiness have cut Indonesia’s vast rainforest by half…. it may already be too late for the endangered animals-and for the people whose lives lie in ruin.” Vidal’s claim states that even though the government has renewed a moratorium, a temporary stop of an activity, it may be too late to save the animals. In the article is says, “ Only 240-400 tigers remain and fewer than 100 rhino are left in the forests.”
Allowing for deforestation by the federal government by such vague laws gradually contributes to global deforestation and a corresponding increase in species extinction. Reforestation, by replanting, is only done on a fraction of the deforested area, and it usually creates a monoculture plantation, with much less biological diversity and less disease resistance than in virgin, or old-growth forest.
This cycle is repeated over and over every time the nutrient supply becomes exhausted. As you can now figure out the forest areas (of which still remain!!) are being destroyed at a large scale and at a rapid speed. Underground resources such as iron and aluminium ores are used a great deal in the industries of the developing countries. To obtain and transport has to be quick, easy and the cost has to minimal. To make all these possible roads are being built through forests.
People have been deforesting the Earth for thousands of years, primarily to clear land for crops or livestock. Although tropical forests are largely confined to developing countries, they aren’t just meeting local or national needs; economic globalization means that the needs and wants of the global population are bearing down on them as well. Direct causes of deforestation are agricultural expansion, wood extraction (e.g., logging or wood harvest for domestic fuel or charcoal), and infrastructure expansion such as road building and urbanization. Rarely is there a single direct cause for deforestation. Most often, multiple processes work simultaneously or sequentially to cause deforestation.

When people take down forest so there is nothing left is called deforestation. People do
Scientists themselves are just beginning to understand the serious problems caused by deforestation. Deforestation occurs all over the world by all types of people. Peasant farmers even add to the problem because in most tropical countries the farmers are very poor only making between eight hundred and fifty four hundred dollars annually (NASA Facts). Therefore, they do not have enough money to buy what they need to live therefore they must farm to raise crops for food and to sell. In these poor countries the majority of people are peasant farmers this farming adds up to a great deal of deforestation. These farmers chop down a small area of trees for there plot to farm on and burn the tree trunks (NASA Facts). The combined number of farmers maintaining this process creates a great deal of clearing and burning of the land they need to cultivate, which results in land being treeless. Commercial logging is also another common form of deforestation. This commercial logging wipes out massive amounts of land sometimes deforesting several miles at...
