Definition: The unplanned, uncontrolled spreading of urban development into areas adjoining the edge of a city.
Urban sprawl may be considered as another word for urbanization. It refers to the migration of a population from populated towns and cities to low density development over more and more rural land.
Sprawl is basically the uncontrolled horizontal growth of cities. It needs to be managed because it eats up the necessary, adjacent agricultural lands that are the valuable part of the local food system. Additionally, the travel times to work and recreation are significantly increased, with higher dependencies on personal vehicles.
The term "sprawl" is used to mean two very different things:
1) Where We Grow- Suburbs as opposed to cities.
