The foremost definition of love in Collins English Dictionary is “If you love someone, you feel romantically or sexually attracted to them, and they are very important to you.” This describes a marital relationship between two people but does not encompass all forms of love. A more inclusive definition of love from Collins English Dictionary is that “a person’s happiness is very important to you so that you behave in a kind and caring way towards them.” Relationships such as Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship, or Juliet and the Nurse’s connection, encompass the latter definition of love and are stronger and greater than Romeo and Juliet’s hurtful relationship. Shakespeare creates Lady Capulet to not have a huge impact on Juliet’s life, causing the Nurse to fill that motherly spot. Right away, we get a feel for how intimate their relationship is. The Nurse lost a child that was very close in age to Juliet, causing her to take Juliet under her wing instead. She obviously wants Juliet to be happy, which is apart of the definition of love, and she wants to protect and do what's best for her. First off, we see this as Juliet feels comfortable to confide in the Nurse about Romeo. Telling the wrong person could have lead to either the Montagues or the Capulets finding out, showing that Juliet must have a lot of trust in the Nurse. After finding out about Romeo, the Nurse helps Juliet marry him and keeps the whole thing a secret because she wants to make Juliet happy. She could have been punished by the Capulet’s if they were to have found out that she was getting into contact with the Montague family, yet she sacrifices that for Juliet’s sake. Later, when Romeo gets banished, she eases her by “find[ing] Romeo to comfort [Juliet]” (III.ii.140-141). She puts herself in danger multiple times to try to make Juliet happy, which is obviously going beyond the work of her title. She sees Juliet as her own daughter instead of simply a part of her job. This shows how authentic and strong of a relationship they have, and how impactful this type of …show more content…
Their love for each other outweighs Romeo and Juliet’s as Mercutio and Romeo look out and care for each other. In act three, scene one, they both step in to fight Tybalt for one another. Shakespeare sets them up as best friends that would literally risk their lives for each other. After Mercutio does indeed get slain, we see Romeo’s feelings for Mercutio through his zealous reaction. As Romeo’s “very friend, hath got this mortal hurt in [his] behalf,” he feels that he needs Tybalt or himself to pay for it (III.i.107-108). Before, he didn’t even want to fight Tybalt because of his relation to Juliet, but when Tybalt kills the person that Romeo had the greatest connection with, his brotherly love for Mercutio overrides the tie with Juliet. He lets “fire-eyed fury be [his] conduct now,” as his rage takes over (III.i.121). His reaction displays how important Mercutio was to him, and the love that they had for each other, which is now causing this frenzy. Shakespeare also shows the audience how well of a connection they have by having them joke around and playfully argue. By doing this, it shows that they must have a stable connection as their playful banter and jokes don’t offend each other, because they know when they are being serious or not. They understand each other’s personalities, which puts them a major step ahead of Romeo and Juliet. If the
Nurse has betrayed Juliet, she and Friar Lawrence were the two who knew and believed in Romeo and Juliet's love, and Nurse abandons Juliet in a way in this scene, telling her to marry Paris, and forget Romeo. I think that when she is saying this that she is thinking of herself, and of what she could lose if they were discovered, but at the same time she was thinking of Juliet's well-being, and that she would be safe in Verona, with Paris: "I think that you are happy in this second match, For it excels your first; or, if it did not, Your first is dead, or 'twere as good he were As living here and you no use of him. " Lady Capulet shows a very different love for her daughter to the love which Nurse shows her, she has hardly looked after Juliet for much of her life, and is distanced from her. Around the period of time when the play was set there was a social tradition for the upper classes to have a 'wet nurse'. It would not have been accepted in soc... ...
Lady Capulet is known to be a foil character to the nurse. As the nurse is portrayed as a loving character and mother-like figure towards Juliet. Alternatively, Lady Capulet is stiff and inconsiderate towards Juliet. She seems to only care about how Juliet will make the family reputation appear to others, constantly treating her like a tool for status by marrying her to Paris.
but then again she is like a surrogate mother. The nurse is still a servant and she is n no position to argue against him, because she is sticking up for Juliet would have made Lord Capulet more angry. Although Lord Capulet should not speak to the nurse like he does he should ask her to leave, but this shows how angry and violent Lord Capulet
Conversely, Juliet's mother is stiff and cold towards, and uses Juliet as a tool to make the family name look good. As we learn in towards the beginning of the story Juliet is the last child of the Capulet line, and as a result her mother also puts pressure on Juliet for having a two year engagement with the Prince. Nurse obviously seems to be closer to Juliet, than her biological mother. Hence, this is yet another character foil present in Shakespeare’s play involves Juliet’s nurse and Lady Capulet (Juliet’s mother.)
Romeo was very loyal to his friends and family, and it is possible that Mercutio thought that Romeo would help him fight off Tybalt (since he was unaware of Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage that somewhat united Romeo and Tybalt). However, this argument is easily deemed invalid. Romeo was not in the town square when the fight had first begun, so Mercutio expected his help in the fight would be a far-fetched idea. A person who is not present cannot help or hinder the situation at hand. In addition, Romeo tried to break up the fight when he said, “Gentlemen, for shame forbear this outrage!
She always wanted to keep Juliet happy. As Juliet fell in love with Romeo The Nurse went behind the backs of Juliet’s parents and was sending messages between the two. “By my troth, it is well said. “For himself to mar,”/ Quoth he? Gentlemen, can any of you tell me where I/ May find the young Romeo?” (2.4.60). The Nurse was someone Juliet went to whenever she needed help, and The Nurse always delivered, but this time The Nurse helped her do something that was never thought about in the house of a Capulet, to marry a Montague. Furthermore, Juliet’s actions were very childish, but the person that was supposed to guide her did not do anything to stop her. Instead of going to Juliet’s parents and telling them what was going on between the two, The Nurse helped them get married. “Then hei you hence to Friar Lawrence's cell./ There stays a husband waiting to make you his wife.”(2.5. 60-65) She could have put it to a stop by telling Juliet she was not allowed to get married. Instead The Nurse gave Juliet her blessing and was helping her get married. By the time The Nurse realized she should not have been helping Juliet it was already too late. All in all, The Nurse failed as a God Teacher because she had the power to stop all of this, but instead she put Juliet's happiness before her best interest and that did not end well resulting in the death of Juliet
The Nurse is Capulets servant, and she is a very good servant as she tries her hardest to please the Capulets and Juliet at the same time. She is also a very important character in the play and in the Capulets lives. Through out the play The Nurse is Juliet’s confidant. The Nurse is a crucial character who strongly influences Juliet’s thoughts and actions. The main reason why the Capulet employed her was to breast feed Juliet. The Nurse was perfect for the job because she had just lost her little baby Susan, and The Nurse will now have unwanted breast milk that is ideal for Juliet as Lady Capulet does not want the role of breast feeding. The relationship between The Nurse and Juliet is like a mother daughter relationship, she is like Juliet surrogate mother towards Juliet.
That being the case, she supported Juliet and Romeo's marriage, and they fell in love which made them both ignorant to the fact that their death would affect their families. Additionally, the Nurse advised Juliet to marry Romeo she evens encourages Juliet to meet with Romeo in secret and she delivered Juliet’s letters to Romeo. The Nurse tells Juliet “Romeo is good as dead” and betrays Juliet when she most needs her. If the Nurse would have done her job of informing the Capulets of Juliet’s whereabouts then they could have prevented the whole relationship. Juliet loved Romeo and the Nurse didn’t stand up for their love thence she can be blamed for this
“LOVE IS A Certain Inborn Suffering derived from the sight of and excessive Meditation upon the beauty of the opposite sex, which causes each one to wish above all things the embraces of the other, and by common desires carry out all of love’s precepts in the other’s Embrace” is definition of medieval love. But Really, How much does Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet comes to terms of traditional “ love”? Think about Romeo in the very beginning of the play, when he talks about Rosaline. He describes, rather about her looks as he says: “ O, she is rich in beauty, only poor”. Romeo talks of his unattainable love to the beautiful Rosaline. He sees Rosaline as strong, for she would never be hit by cupid’s arrow. This is an example of courtly love. He mourns that she would never be with him. In Elizabethan time, Courtly Love was accepted in every day life, and it was not suppose to lead to marriage. Poor Romeo was not able to receive love back from Rosaline and he uses oxymoron’s to show is his confusion“ O Brawling loves, o loving hate”. He also adds a little sexual element“ Nor ope her lap to saint-seducing gold”. Now we ask, Does Romeo only like Rosaline for her body and appearance?Words like “ the precious treasure of his eyesight lost” and imagery of blindness and darkness all relate to the fact that Romeo sees loves as a bad thing. Yet Courtly Love is much like the tradition of “ Arranged Marriage”. Today, we see this as destruction to our freedom and our right to chose, we mos...
After Tybalt killed Mercutio and Romeo challenges him to a duel, Romeo demands, “That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio’s soul/ Is but a little way above our heads/ Staying for thine to keep him company/ Either thou or I, or both, must go with him” (Shakespeare Act III scene i, lines 119-123). This quote shows how Romeo’s downfall is partly his fault because he is defying the prince’s command to no longer fight with the Capulets by challenging Tybalt. Since Romeo is aware that he is defying the prince and fighting anyway it is proven he is contributing to his own demise or downfall. When Mercutio is wounded after fighting Tybalt , he cries, “I am hurt/ A plague o’ both your houses!” (Shakespeare Act III scene i, lines 84-85). The excerpt shows how even Mercutio recognizes the feud between the Montagues and Capulets being destructive, and how it is now gotten so out of hand he has been dragged in it. Mercutio tries to open Romeo’s eyes on how if this feud continues there will be a demise for both families; but by Romeo choosing to ignore this advice and killing Tybalt he is setting himself up for his failure/downfall. Thus, Romeo is shown a tragic hero because his demise is partly his fault and not an
In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the views of love held by the character Romeo contrast sharply with the views of Mercutio. Romeo's character seems to suffer from a type of manic depression. He is in love with his sadness, quickly enraptured and easily crushed again on a passionate roller coaster of emotion. Mercutio, by contrast is much more practical and level headed. His perceptions are clear and quick, characterized by precise thought and careful evaluation. Romeo, true to his character begins his appearance in the play by wallowing in his depression over Rosaline who does not return his love:
Love in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet "Romeo and Juliet" is a love tragedy based on different kinds of loves. Romeo and Juliet become married in a forbidden relationship over the high tension brawl between their rival families which Shakespeare clearly shows in the play. Despite the family brawls, the pair decides to let their "perfect" love defeat all. Peoples ideas have changed in the space of 400 years, for example back then some loves featured in this play would produce different reactions to the audience, than today. Shakespeare opens the play with the chorus who speaks a sonnet, where love imagery is found; "Two Star-crossed lovers" =
The Nurse’s job is to take care of Juliet and raise her; however, upon learning that Juliet is romantically involved with their family’s enemy, she doesn’t provide any form of counsel to Juliet.” I must another way, To fetch a ladder by the which your love Must climb a bird’s nest soon when its dark.” (2.5.77-79). The Nurse aides Romeo by telling him to go to Juliet’s room, showing her approval of the relationship. She did not provide any form of counsel to Juliet or inform Capulet or Lady Capulet about Juliet’s relationship.
The Nurse has a stronger relationship with Juliet over her own mother, Lady Capulet. The nurse really cares for Juliet and loves her like a daughter because she lost her daughter Susan. “Susan and she-God rest all Christian souls!-/Were of an age: well, Susan is with God…”(Ⅰ,ⅲ,20-21). The Nurse lost her daughter, Susan, and she was born on the same day as Juliet. This leads me to believe that the Nurse must be replacing her own loss with the life of Juliet. The Nurse did do many things that only mothers do. “She was wean’d,-I never shall forget it…”(Ⅰ,ⅲ,26). This quote says that the nurse will never forget the day that Juliet was weaned off of her breast milk. Breastfeeding is something
There are many mysteries in life; one of many happens to be love. Love is such an easy thing to grasp, but to hold and truly understand it will dumbfound philosophers for a millennia and a millennia more to come. To understand such a thing is like asking; why does the sun set? Why do the ones we say we “love” leave us? To give an answer in a matter of seconds would almost certainly be wrong. Ask your self, what is love? A good example is in Verona, Italy where many letters of “love” are sent; one such letter will be examined and only a small few could truly say if this letter was “love” or just a strong connection to another human being.
