Understanding Anxiety
“Anxiety sets in motion a series of physiological changes, All designed to focus on dealing with the sudden threat to our existence.” Every person may experience occasional anxiety, whether it be nervous about the paper due next Friday, or waking up with the constant feeling something bad is going to happen today. Some people suffer more than others with this illness, so being able to understand how it affects a loved one may aid in the treatment outcome and possible how the person reacts the next time they have a panic attack or bad spell.
What is anxiety? Anxiety goes back many centuries there are many theories on anxiety for example “Benedict Morel (1809-73) argued that the symptoms of anxiety were triggered by disease of the nervous system. Maurice Krishaber (1836-83) argued anxiety was caused by cardiovascular irregularities.” Anxiety is, in fact, an emotion. Just like being happy or sad, anxiety brought about fear and worry. away.’ Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) ‘Worry is the cardinal characterstic of generalzed anxiety disorder, which the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagonostic and Satistical Manual defines as Excessive, unrealistic and uncontrolled worry and High levels of distress and/ or major disruptions to the affected persons day-to-day life.’ GAD has some of the same symptoms of other anxiety disorders, including some amount of worry, trouble sleeping, troubles concentrating and fatigue to name a few.
But what sets GAD apart from the rest is the never-ending fear something will go wrong. Constant unwanted thoughts you can’t seem to shut off and repeatedly going thoughts, lack of sleep which leads to irritability. ‘Worrying to the point of uncountable is the main characteristic, which can be a highly debilitating illness.’ This illness
can be very serious it can cause encumber a person to there own thoughts. ‘About 3 % of people suffer from GAD, and woman are twice as likely to be affected as men.’ There’s no rhyme or reason why anyone experiences anxiety. But to experience GAD and the feeling of dysphoria is a terrible feeling that consumes your whole body. Imagine your doing something fun with your family or friends. Out of nowhere your stomach starts to churn you have a questionable amount of guilt in the pit of your stomach, your mind starts racing and your notice your heartbeat rising. Your body then tells your brain you need more oxygen. Your breathing increases. In the back of your mind, you know the feeling all too well. What comes next? Your hyperventilating to the point it affects your limbs arms and legs draw up. Before you know it you are waking up in the floor. You just experienced an anxiety attack. Treatment for anxiety can be different for each case and each person. Treatment can take a tremendous amount of time and patience and can be very tedious, to find the right doctor to help. In some case’s a person will need a referral to a Psychiatrist. Psychiatrist are trained medical doctors, that can take you through the process of seeking to counsel and prescribing medication. In some cases, a psychologist is also included in the referral process. Psychologist focus on psychotherapy and behavioral intervention.
Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. Anxiety defined means “distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune” defined by Dictionary.com. In the epic poem of Beowulf, one could say that the townspeople had anxiety when it came to Grendel because they feared what he could do to them.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder, also known as (GAD) is one of the several types of anxiety disorders. GAD according to our textbook (Lahey) is an uneasy sense of general tension and apprehension for no apparent reason that makes the individual highly uncomfortable because of its prolonged presence. GAD is much more than the normal anxiety people experience day to day. Without provoking, it is chronic and exaggerated worry and tension. This disorder can involve anticipating disaster, often worrying excessively about health, money, family or work. Sometimes, though, just the thought of getting through the day brings anxiety.
Fear and Anxiety are essential functions that occur in the brain that allow people to respond to stimuli appropriately. These feelings as normal as they are can cause problems and in 3.1 percent of adult Americans approximately 6.8 million people it does cause problems (“Generalized anxiety disorder”, 2014). A problem can arise when people have too much fear and anxiety; a problem is evident when it interferes with their life and their ability to do things. This is known as general anxiety disorder (GAD). When someone is suffering from generalized anxiety disorder they normally experience excessive exaggerated anxiety and worry about normal life events that give no clear reason for worry (“Generalized anxiety disorder”, 2014). This disorder can be debilitating and rule over people’s lives if it is severe and a better understanding of the disorder can be gained by looking at historical views, current views, causes and symptoms, case studies, differential diagnosis considerations, and treatment.
Anxiety is a feeling of tension associated with a sense of threat of danger when the source of the danger is not known. In comparison, fear is a feeling of tension that is associated with a known source of danger. I believe it is normal for us to have some mild anxiety present in our daily lives. Everyday that I can think of I have some kind of anxiety though out that day. Anxiety warns us and enables us to get ready for the ‘fight or flight’ response. However, heightened anxiety is emotionally painful. It disrupts a person's daily functioning.

Bearing in mind that an anxiety response is a result of various factors, there are different types of anxiety disorders. The most common type of anxiety disorders as described as specific phobias, social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder (PD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) (2016), specific phobias affect about 19 million adults in the U.S, while SAD affects 15 million, PD affects 6 million, GAD affects about 6.8 million, OCD affects about 2.2 million and PTSD affects 7.7 million adults respectively. Considering that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S, yet only about one-third of those suffering receive treatment (ADAA, 2016).
Anxiety is a normal reaction to a threatening situation and results from an increase in the amount of adrenaline from the sympathetic nervous system. This increased adrenaline speeds the heart and respiration rate, raises blood pressure, and diverts blood flow to the muscles. These physical reactions are appropriate for escaping from danger but when they cause anxiety in many situations throughout the day, they may be detrimental to a normal lifestyle. An anxiety disorder is a disorder where feelings of fear, apprehension, or anxiety are disruptive or cause distortions in behavior, (Coon, 526); they are psychiatric illnesses that are not useful for normal functioning. At times, an underlying illness or disease can cause persistent anxiety. Treatment of the illness or disease will stop the anxiety. Anxiety illnesses affect more than 23 million Americans with about 10 million Americans suffering from the most common, general anxiety disorder . (Harvard, 1). Common anxiety disorders are panic attacks (panic disorder), phobias, and general anxiety disorder (GAD). Panic attacks Panic attacks can begin with a feeling of intense terror followed by physical symptoms of anxiety. A panic attack is characterized by unpredictable attacks of severe anxiety with symptoms not related to any particular situation. (Hale, 1886). The person experiencing the attack may not be aware of the cause. Symptoms include four or more of the following: pounding heart, difficulty breathing, dizziness, chest pain, shaking, sweating, choking, nausea, depersonalization, numbness, fear of dying, flushes, fear of going crazy. Heredity, metabolic factors, hyperventilation, and psychological factors may contribute to anxiety causing panic attacks.
Anxiety is a term for several disorders that causes the body to feel fear, nervousness, apprehension, and worrying, "Anxiety is a word we use for some types of fear that are consequently to do with the thought of a threat or something going wrong in the future, rather than right now" (Mental Health Foundation). The symptoms that one face during GAD include: worry all the time, irritation, feeling of insecurity, depression, dizziness, tension, restless, sleeping disorder, headaches, mental disorder, nausea, and muscle aches. It happens continually for more than 6 months. The symptoms of worry vary during General Anxiety Disorder, worry about family, finance, and always thinking about negative outcomes of any action. Although worrying about family is normal, but in GAD case, the patient think whole day about the way of living of his family, their future, their finance and calculate negative outcomes.

As soon as I wake up in the morning, I hear my brain freaking out about the day ahead of me. What do I eat for breakfast? What do I do first when I get home from school? What happens if I get in a car crash on my way to school? A million thoughts at one time racing through my head. I never have the time to process all of them. Most mornings, I lay in my bed and have to take a few deep breaths to begin my hectic but not so hectic day. That’s just the beginning. It’s safe to say that I feel that I 'm an anxious person and that I have an anxiety disorder.
Fear is a human emotion everyone dislikes. Fear is in every person with no exception. It can be difficult problem to solve. We can overcome our fears by challenging ourselves by analyzing fear and developing a growth mindset.
The difference between normal worrying and generalized anxiety disorder are the accompanying symptoms as well as the length of time the worrying persists. To occasionally torment oneself with or suffer from distressing thoughts is classified as normal worrying. The symptoms of worrying may vary, but most people experience disturbed feelings and the mental fatigue of being overly concerned with a circumstance. On the other hand, with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) one experiences excessive anxiety under most circumstances, expecting the worst even when there is no obvious or visible reason for concern. The symptoms are being agitated, on edge, easily tired, having difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, and issues with sleep. GAD usually develops during childhood or the adolescent years and the symptoms last as long as six months as opposed to normal worrying which dissipates in a much shorter length of time. Facing your fears is not an option if you are scared of the fear itself. Having support from someone could prevent a panic attack and help tremendously because it is always comforting to know you are not alone. The most effective way to help someone with an anxiety disorder is first understanding the differences between feeling nervous and owning anxiety disorders. It is an illness that is capable of dealing a lot of damage to a person’s mental health, and without proper help can be fatal. Anxiety disorders can easily evolve into depression and can make a person feel trapped or even suicidal. Knowing the proper procedures can greatly affect people with these disorders and could possibly save someone’s life.
Anxiety is our body’s reaction to stressful dangerous or unfamiliar situations (“What is Anxiety,” n.d.). Everyone has anxiety at times and this is necessary in human beings but some people have it much worse than others.
