“Can you imagine what a mess a world would be without names? (website)Names are very important to a person and their individuality. Ayn Rand’s novel “Anthem” is a book in which the people written about do not have names. The importance of having your own individual names is huge. This poem written by Francisco Alarcon describes the life of an illiterate man who finds himself signing away his freedom by placing his mark on a contract. He is unable to read the contract he is signing or even write his name. Being unable to read he leaves himself vulnerable to be taken advantage of and deceived. Alarcon, who was raised in a Hispanic community, was surrounded by illiteracy. Wanting to change the situation in which he was raised in he went to school to become a teacher and now focuses his efforts on eliminating illiteracy. This poem was written from the experience of watching those he cared about around him being taken advantage of because they were unable to read or write. "The X in My Name" shows the mistakes and ill consequences that illiteracy can bring upon those uneducated. It also sheds light onto how social structure and financial class play into illiteracy, and how detrimental illiteracy can be to those on the low end of the monetary spectrum. Though Alarcon only uses a few words it is easy to understand and see how the illiterate can be effortlessly be taken advantage of.
After reading “ My Name” by Sandra Cisneros I realized something i really never thought was important was indeed important. In this excerpt Esperanza states how she doesn't want to be like her great-grandmother whom has the same name but she wants to be different, she wants to break free from the meaning that her great-grandmother gave to the name. From her saying this I found out that I related to Esperanza more that what i thought. I relate because I know what it's like to have inherited a name and have to try to exceed in being the meaning of that name, but like Esperanza “I don't want to inherit a seat by the window’’, instead i want to break free from the chains of the meaning of the name and create a new meaning.
Everybody always has two names: one from their parents and one from their friends. The name that is given by
Native American and settler have always been fighting over land, and the movie clip, Pocahontas explains it in a different way. They were fighting because the Native Americans captured John Smith from the settlers. This fight was stopped because Pocahontas jumped in front of the potential murder of John Smith. She did this because she loved him and also she did not want anyone to fight, she told her father about what he caused by capturing him from the settlers. Mike Gabriel inaccurately portrayed the conflict between the settlers and the Native Americans because they never fought and it was stopped by love between a Pocahontas, a Native American and John Smith, a European, Europeans and Native Americans never liked each other.
Well my Messas name was Nole William, and we were named for him. But when we was freed, we were told to take freed names.
Do you think your name defines who you are? The chapter from the book The Misfits by James Howe and the article New Life In The US No longer Means New Name by Sam Roberts both deal with the ways names can affect someone culturally and personally. Although both texts have similar messages, the theme of names is different in each.
Each individual in this world has a distinctive identity. Even twins and triplets, who appear to be similar in their physical traits, have separate individual identities. After taking the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, I was able to affirm some of my specific personality traits that define me. I am active and curious and I never tire of adventure. I enjoy every bit of my life. Until now, I have discovered just a portion of my specific identity, but I will reveal the mystery of my identity in this exciting and adventurous journey of my life.
According to thinkbabynames.com, the name Bria, being a name of Irish, Gaelic, and Celtic origin, means “virtuous and strong.” At first glance, I did not believe my name fit who I was, but taking a second to look back over my life, it does. When I think of “virtuous” and “strong”, I think of a person that is “morally good” and can “withstand great pressure or trials throughout life.” It kind of reminds me of a superhero, which I am nowhere near, but I do believe my parents raised a good young woman. Everyone’s

Is it important to know what is behind your name? Now in days, many names are given without knowing their meanings or where they come from. For example, I was given the name of Judith just because my parents heard it and liked it. It depends where and in which culture were they raised. For this purpose I researched my name Judith. Some of the main points I found were interesting to me like the history and my personality.
I think it’s great to have a long first name because you can create so many nicknames from it, for example the name Annabelle. If you are not satisfied with this name you can have people call you An, Anna, Belle, Elly, or even A.B.! The choices seem to be endless with long first names. This is why I chose the name Lucrecia. It is my mother’s name as well as her mother’s name. They have each given their own meaning to the name, but unfortunately when researched the meaning is unknown. This name has many nicknames attached to it, such as Lucy, Lucre, Sha, or even Lu-Lu.
The History of Surnames throughout Western Civilization There have been hundreds of thousands of different last names in the world and each one has a meaning. Surnames or “family names” or “last names” were used as far back as Aethelred, the son of Edgar, the king. His name was Aoalroar Jatgerisson. While a small number of nobles and people of the wealthier class had hereditary surnames, it was not until the Norman Conquest of 1066 that the common folk began to trace their kinships as well.
