DEFINITION ESSAY According to the “Database Statistics 90” updated on July 17, 2015 there was a grand total of 19,693 names. A name is chosen for you by your parents or caregivers when you are born and becomes a personal word that you are addressed as or referred to. Each and every person is unique and has different reasons and meanings for why their name is what it is. The dictionary or internet might have a definition of what your name means as well as a family member who has their own personal meaning behind why they chose the name. Etymology is the study of where words originally came from and their meaning. However, Urban Dictionary described Shailey as “A girl that is sexy beyond belief. She is funny, smart, the epitomy of the perfect girl.” The name Shailey means style. Shailey is the type of person who will take a negative moment and turn it into a positive one. She is a person who has all the characteristics that a leader holds as stated by MoonAstro. (Baby Name Shailey with Meaning in Astrology) When researching my last name in the dictionary it gave definitions with the top being “Adolf (German) 1854-1946, Austrian orthopedic surgeon”. When looking up the definition of Lorenz in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) the leading definition involved a man named Max Otto Lorenz, a United States statistician who formulated the curve. “The Lorenz Curve is a model that represents a probability distribution of statistical values, and is often associated with income distribution calculations.” (Lorenz Curve) As stated by The Internet Surname Database, Lorenz is early medieval English origin and derives from the name Laurence, originally the Latin “Laurentius” from “Laurentium”, the “City of laurels”, in Italy with the symbolic representation meaning victory. The dictionaries don’t automatically define what your name means because everyone has their own reasoning for the meaning of their name.
