When I hear the word honorable, there are many different meaning that come to mind. To start, in the dictionary the word honorable has to do with people and actions that are honest, fair and worthy of respect. An honorable person is someone who believes in truth and chooses to make the right choices; a person who tries to live up to the high principles. Also, this word is used for people who are deserving of this title. For example, a judge who has the privilege of the title “ Your Honor”. The judge is merely supposed to enforce what the law is; they are the only ones with the power to put a person in jail. Then, there is the United States Military that pops up to mind when the word honorable is thrown around. The military, any of the military
branches, the end achievement for any servicemen/ servicewomen is to complete their contract with the honorable discharge. To leave with this title shows the fulfillment of the contract obligated duties that were completed efficiently, honorably and faithfully. I was fortunate enough to have served our country for seven years and discharged from the United states Army national Guard with that honorable discharge. By comparison, in the work field the term honorable can be looked at as professional. These qualities are what help with promotions and whom are seen for these awards when the time has come. At the same time, I can only hope that one day I can pass these qualities down to my children. To teach that respect, honesty, being humble, confidence, discipline, and to be honorable help you come far in life. Compared to unhonorable, which will set back that career and life goal you plan to achieve. Opposite characteristics of unhonorable are such, selfishness, bad ego, lazy, being cynical, and the list continues. Every human is unique; which would make every meaning and viewing of this word honorable different. I strive to be honorable in my day to day life, through the decisions that are made. My hope is that every person will fulfill their definition of what honorable means to them.
Professional Military Education schools teach the Army Ethic and evaluation reports for leaders affirm this ethic. The Army punishes individuals, especially leaders, who violate this code. The Army administratively punishes Soldiers who do not adhere to this code, and the severity of punishment increases with rank. One recent and highly visible example of this is former General Petraeus’s adultery and the subsequent professional sanctions he experienced. The Army grows its own ethical code and maintains it through the American people.

However defined honor can play major roles in how a person will act in a given situation. John proctor holds his moral standpoint and does not falter into the temptations of selfishness, while Elizabeth would describe honor as how a person lives their lives. Some can even describe honor as what is most important in life; family. Giles believed that his life was the ultimate object he could sacrifice to maintain his family’s happiness. However honor can be defined, one thing is certain; Everyone has some degree of honor in their lives.

To be honorable is to have integrity. Can the ones committing crime, drunk in the gutter, or those who have died as hoodlums have such thing as honor? In the book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, a gang called “Greasers” have honor. The book is about a rivalry between The Greasers, who are the poor kids, and the Socs who the rich kids. The Greasers are hoodlums, who do not always think clearly and let emotions, such as anger and sadness control them. Many people who are honored aren’t honorable. In Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, a very proud and dishonorable character, trumps Brutus’ speech to the public regarding the assassination of Caesar. After Brutus convinces the public that the assassination was necessary Antony steps up and turns them from loyal to Brutus to wanting to kill him. This is because the public honors Antony more than Brutus even though his speech was more honorable. The crowd couldn’t see though Antony’s manipulating speech which didn’t technically break his agreement with Brutus but had more of an effect than if he did.
