Respect is a difficult word to truly define because it means something different to each person. What is respect? It’s a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. What about the flip side? Lacking respect or courtesy. So the word respect doesn’t actually pack a lot. It really just means looking at another person’s beliefs. You don’t have to like those beliefs. You may even think that they are stupid, but you can still have respect; acknowledging that such beliefs exist. Can you still respect someone that disagrees or disrespects your beliefs? What does it take to have or maintain an effective learning environment? It starts with the teacher. The teacher needs to know the material, the teacher needs to know his/her students, learn modern disciplinary practices, and most importantly have a positive attitude. There needs to be structure, commitment, and honesty. Students, teenagers in general, need structure. It is important to remember that each individual has as much worth as you do, and that you should treat each person with the same respect that you yourself would like to be treated. This is often referred to "The Golden Rule." This means that you should not do something to someone that you yourself wouldn't want done to you. We need someone who is going to help us, someone to be firm with us, care for us. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean we need to be babysat, or treated like we’re ignorant. But what should a teacher expect from a student? Why is it that everyone always points fingers at the teacher, but not the student? We, students, should be ready to learn, willing to learn.
