Recommended: The role of hope in life
Hope. As defined in Oxford Dictionary, hope is a noun and it is something expected and desired for a particular event to happen. Hope is normally associated with positive thoughts and optimism. Literally, hope is believing in miraculous and astounding events where eventhough the possibility of that particular event to happen is low, it is expected to happen by people hoping in it. In desperate times, hope is the force that people rely on for motivation and strength. However, it must also be understood that hope without any effort would only lead to disappointment. Therefore, there are advantages and disadvantages in hope.

Having hopes for such event makes no harm. However, the initiatives that these individuals take will either make or break themselves. Some would just wait while some would work for it until they achieve their targeted goal. As one would expect, those who chooses to wait have a higher percentage of facing disappoitment in contrast with those who are giving effort into realising their dreams. Therefore, the situation that is given above shows that the advantage of hope is that it may motivates an individual to work hard and strive the goal set with passion and diligence. The disavantage of hope in this particular situation is that some would define hope in some other unusual manner such as waiting for the right time and being an opportunist. There will never be a right time or an opportunity as opportunity is something that is created by an individual through hard work and
Even after the competitive race to get into desirable colleges has subsided, students are still finding themselves relying on the pressures of success to motivate them and push them forward. In Barbara Ehrenreich’s article “Bright-Sided”, Ehrenreich explains a mindset shared by those in the market economy that is also internalized by students in college and even workers in the workforce, “If optimism is key to material success, and if you can achieve an optimistic outlook through the discipline of positive thinking, then there is no excuse for failure” (Ehrenreich 538). Through Ehrenreich’s proposed positive thinking concept, the stress and pressures that young adults place on themselves are self-imposed and intertwined with their logic and reasoning, but those pressures are initially driven into their mindset by society. People in current society are brought up to believe that they as individuals must take responsibility for their own success; students think that if they use positive thinking, they will get exactly where they want to be, and if they fail, it is because they did not work hard enough. It is exactly this ideology that leads to students presenting “signs of depression, anxiety, and suicide ideation” (Alicia Kruisselbrink Flatt, The College
“Hope is defined as the action of wishing or desiring that something will occur.” Hope helps people move forward in life to see what’s coming next for them. For example, “I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support” (Wiesel, “Night”.) This quote explains the effects of hope in a pitiful situation. Eliezer Wiesel and his father were torn apart, mentally and physically from everything they
In “Hope is the thing with feathers”, hope is heard in troubled times and warms the soul, but isn’t always rational. The poem says hope, “perches in the soul” (2). Hope is described as constant, and as an irrefutable part of us. But the ‘perching’ bird controls us, its ‘claws’ on our heart, and we feel compelled to never give up our dreams. Hope is also, “sweetest-in the Gale” (5). People cling to hope when life is hard, and hope is welcome when all else has failed. Hope comes to people anytime, anywhere. However pleasing hope is, it, “sings the tune without the words” (3). Hope is attractive, and promises much, but there are no words to back up the tune, and is mostly something to keep one’s soul going, not something that will ever amount to anything or deliver on its promises. It is alluring to gamble everything on hope, but in the end, there aren’t any ‘words’, and you’ll always lose. Anyone can be both warmed and deluded by hope.
What is the director ultimately saying about the ways in which hope affects the individual?
Hope has the incredible ability to make or break someone. People are always told to make large goals in school and employment, and try to reach those ambitions no matter how far they are. Hope is the motivation behind accomplishing dreams, but it also has the ability to break people who have hoped for something so desperately, yet never came to fruition. Only determination and personal situations can persuade hope to fly or fall. A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly highlights this ambiguous hope we depend on through the use of symbolism, characterization, and inner conflict.
The world defines “hope” as wishing or wanting to see something happen. Like there’s a fifty-fifty chance it could happen. In the book The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian we see Junior, an Indian boy, go to an all white school. This was a huge decision for him and not everyone in his tribe supported it. Junior still continued to have hope that things would become better. The kind of hope that comes with making difficult decisions.
Hope isn’t just a word, it’s a feeling. Moreover, it’s a word, a feeling, and a desire. In the Urban Dictionary it defines hope as, “A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. A feeling of trust. To want something to happen or be the case.” So it’s true, hope isn’t just a word. In The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne has
What is hope? Hope is the feeling of desire for a certain thing to happen. Hope is something that even when everything goes wrong you still believe that there is still good somewhere. Hope is something that even the toughest people will feel. Hope relates to the theme in S.E Hinton’s, The Outsiders. The theme of this story, is just because something bad happens, that doesn’t mean that you can’t stop living life to the fullest, and even when the going gets tough you still have to have hope that it will get better.
Hope is the expectation and the desire for an event to happen. For many people, having hope is to see a reality with a positive feeling. From hope, faith comes in. Having faith in something unrealistic motivates people to keep moving forward and try the best of their abilities to make something happen. Most of today’s religions, especially Christianity, based most of their doctrine on the faith of salvation from Jesus Christ‘s sacrifice and the hope of living for eternity, if we obey the laws of God in accordance with the Bible.
It is the ambition of getting what you desire, no matter the odds you are facing. To have hope, means you have perseverance. The idea of hope belongs to many people, it belonged to the Pilgrims as they sailed to the new world. They had hope in a new beginning, and a new place where they could worship freely without persecution. Hope belonged to the Founding Fathers, they had a hope for a new, successful country where the citizens had their own liberties. As Abraham Lincoln said, “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.” Hope also belongs to us now, the new generation. We have the hope of a country without oppression and a world filled with peace. A world that celebrates everyone's differences. We have hope for a country based around God’s
It can help the achievement of extraordinary things and push people to new heights never before seen. Hope is an idea, something inside the minds and hearts of those pursuing it. It is a concept, yet it wields limitless power. It can be seen in every essence

What are the benefits of hope? Hope is a remedy for all sorts of hardships and misfortunes. Hope enables us to cope with stressful events, such as an elderly father who’s dying in a hospital bed. Hope motivates us to persevere when our lives are infused stressful life situations or painful events. The unemployed person searching for work is inspired by the image of a new job to pay the bills and purchase a few of life’s comforts, perhaps a television, iPad, new pair of blue jeans, money to fill the refrigerator with food.
Hope. The very belief that things will improve, or change will come. Hope is that feeling that washes over you when the beauty of the world is more clear than ever. Standing across from Hope stands the emotion that clouds the mind and leads us to seclusion. Depression.
“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort” (Owens). Without any determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort dreams will not turn into reality. People should look forward and push for that reality. Anyone can say they will fulfill their dream, but it takes someone with dedication, determination and effort to accomplish that dream. Effort is the key to success. Effort is like the sugar and spice to everything nice. Without any push of effort for the dream to become reality dedication, determination and self-discipline don’t take place. The dream drives people to accomplish the unexpected.
