The most common word for students in high school: homework. Overwhelmed every day by loads of homework given to them by their 6 teachers, some 7 teachers. Teenagers at the high school level see this more than at the junior high level. Bombarded by homework day after day, no time to do anything else. Homework leaves students with less sleep, fewer things to do, and takes time away from their family. One of the most important things for anyone's body includes sleep. Teenagers need more sleep than most. They hang out with friends, play at late games, work, and sometimes eat at family dinners or special occasions. Students stay up later for those occasions and on top of that, they need to finish their homework for the next day. One review in Chemistry I needed to complete took me almost all night. I couldn’t spend time with my family, and I couldn’t do anything with my sister. I couldn’t watch tv or eat a nice dinner, I scarfed it down quickly. This happened multiple times already in my high school career. Including Mr. Formsma’s essays we write: due at 11:59 on Friday. I think every family wants and should spend time together. My family and I spend a lot of time together and we like that. But a lot of the time when we want to watch Survivor as a family, I can’t because I need to finish my homework. We also like to play games together. Many times I can’t participate because I need to finish my homework or I run out of time, and I need to sleep. Homework helps students widen their horizon and practice things they need more help on. This way they feel ready for their test. Homework for some can act as a study tool. From this they achieve great success. Sleep! That wonderful, blissful void between last night and this morning. Sleep is one of the most basic functions of life. Nearly all creatures must sleep in order to properly carry out tasks; teenagers are no exception. The typical teenager needs an average of nine to ten hours of sleep a night in order for their brains to be capable of working at full capacity. School starts so early that they infringe upon that basic necessity. In order for teens to receive an adequate amount of sleep, it is mandatory to enact later start times for high schools across the country.
For some high school students, sleep is not considered a necessity – but rather, a luxury. Sports, extra-curricular activities, and Fine Arts programs play an important role in students’ lives and require a significant amount of commitment and dedication. Social life aside, some students have taken the additional endeavors of acquiring jobs, participating in volunteer activities, and taking extra Advanced Placement classes. With too many tasks to fulfill in a twenty-four hour day, high school students are forced to substitute for the most essential condition of all: sleep.
Teens spend most of their day at school but are unable to fulfill their learning opportunities because of little or no sleep.
The origin of the word myth seems to be a myth in itself. Myths have generally originated from a Greek history that used an oral tradition to explain events that occurred before the written word. Often supernatural beings or fictitious characters were used to explain popular ideas concerning phenomena's of nature or the history of people. The myths that were carried on from generation to generation were often very imaginative in an attempt to spark the interest of young listeners. These would be told at social gatherings. The main purpose of a myth was to relay historical information among groups. Early myths often dealt with the origin of man, customs, religious rights, incidents involving the lives of gods, stories of culture heroes, adaptations of old world myths, or the retelling of biblical stories.
Lack of sleep of teens is not caused by choice. Many teens do not choose to stay up late at night because they are out or having fun. The body has circadian rhythms. “These rhythms are generated internally and develop without any social or environmental cues. Adolescents experience a natural circadian phase delay and, therefore, tend to stay up later and sleep in later than in preadolescents” (Final Report Summary, 2001). The opening and closing schedules of schools are not based on these rhythms but are based on the business world and what is best for it. “School schedules should be adapted to the unique needs of different sub-populations of pupils. Some people would argue that homework should not stay in schools because it decreases the amount of family time. They say that when a child is doing homework, it decreases family time because that child is not involved in the family but the homework (“Teachers…”). This theory has been proven wrong; in fact homework actually increases family time. Family time increases by the encounter the parents and children have while doing homework. It brings them together by how the children ask for help on their homework (5). The child will ask their parent or siblings to help them, and that will spark the family time. The parents will try to help and will not stop till their child understand how to do it. While helping with their child’s homework the parents can ask how their day went, and how that certain class was. Engaging in conversation always increases family time. Not only will they get to talk to their children, the parents will be informed of their child’s studies and how good or bad they are doing in school. Which proves that homework increases family time.

With all these contributing factors, sleep is the last thing on any teen’s mind. School work has a big effect on teens while trying to do it and do it right and get a good night’s sleep every night. The more and more sleep you get each night, the easier it is to get better grades in school, understand things better, and progress easier and faster. Most people are blaming this on school times. For many students, school starts way too early and are ruining their sleep schedules and themselves in particular.

Most students go to school for about six to eight hours a day. When the bell rings for dismissal one would think it is time to go home and relax. Unfortunately, the school day may be over but, the work after school for many will continue. Some students spend hours doing endless amounts of homework and begin to dread the idea of homework altogether. Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment.
