Heroes can be found anywhere. At home, at school, even on the street. A hero doesn’t have to wear a cape or have super-powers, they can be ordinary people. To me, a hero shows kindness, determination and generosity. Kindness is the brightest light in the darkest times. Kindness shows when someone is willing to help others, say a kind word, or even giving a thumbs up. If my parents weren’t kind, they wouldn’t have been there for me through the hard times. I wouldn’t have had a shoulder to cry on. When my parents got divorced, they both showed me kindness even though they lived in different places. I love them, and I’m very grateful. “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” (Aesop) All they did was comfort me. My brother is sometimes unkind to me and my other siblings. He calls us names, says very rude sentences, and is downright mean. He can be kind when he wants to be, and those are the times when he could be a hero to some people. He is still …show more content…
quite determined to help others. Speaking of determination, a hero can be determined.
Determination shows when someone is not willing to give up. Someone who won’t quit. I read about a man named Josh Dueck, who, in the early 2000s, attempted to flip on skis, a routine trick for him, when something went wrong. He landed badly, was rushed to the hospital and was told he had damaged his spine and was paralyzed from the waist down. Instead of stopping his sports life, the injury made Josh determined to get back on the skis. He soon mastered the art of sit-skiing, shredding the Whistler backcountry with ridiculous ease. “He then set his sights on completing the trick that had led to his injury, becoming the first person ever to land a backflip on a sit-ski in 2012.” (Tristan Kennedy) Through his determination, he skied again and broke a world record. If someone with that type of injury had quit doing what he/she loved, then they wouldn’t be the same person. Giving up is not being determined. Josh Dueck didn’t quit, and that shows his
determination. Generosity is another hero trait. Generosity is when someone is willing to give things up for the greater good. I read about an amazing woman named Brenda Jones who was waiting to receive a liver. Then, on July 18, a hospital in North Texas called-they had a working liver for her. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Abigail Flores also needed a liver. Her situation was more urgent than Jones’s. Without a transplant, the doctors feared that Abigail would die in a few days. So they asked Jones to give up her spot on the donor list so Flores could get the precious organ. Jones agreed. ‘“In my heart, I wouldn’t have been able to live with the liver if I had let this little girl die,” she told WFAA.” (Reader’s Digest) Abigail received a new liver days later. If Brenda Jones had disagreed, then Abigail Flores probably would have died. She would have been pretty selfish. Even though she said she wouldn’t have been able to live with the guilt of being selfish. The traits of a hero define them. Generosity, kindness, and determination can be found in any hero. A hero doesn’t have to have all of the traits I have described. A hero can show loyalty, fearlessness, and even creativity. A hero could be a teacher, a student, or your parents. You could be a hero to someone now, or in the future. I hope you can be a hero to someone.
Recently, students of Olympian High School have stumbled upon the question, "What is a hero?" In the school's 2013 Young Minds Essay Contest, students are expected to consider universal concerns and ideas. Many times when people think of a hero, they think of Superman, Batman, and many other Marvel characters who display unattainable superpowers. However, heroes are prevalent throughout the world. A hero can be anyone who has the desire to help others, brave in dangerous situations, and does not look at exterior gain from helping others.
Over the course of history the definition of what makes a hero has made many changes. Beowulf, Superman, and firefighters are all examples of heroes, but they are very different when broken down. Today’s society defines a hero by his values, his strength, and his journey.
In my opinion, a hero is someone whose principal purpose, whether it be in one situation or over the span of their entire life, is to help others while simultaneously making the world a better place. When the word hero is brought up, the most prevailing image that comes to mind is superheroes like Batman and Superman. But I don’t think you have to have superpowers or even be well known in order to be a hero. There are people all over the world whose intention is to do selfless deeds and go out of their way for others without expectation of obtaining anything in return. These are the type of people I like to consider everyday heroes. They go through life just trying to be the best they can and trying to help as many people as they can. Whether
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is an individual who is admired for great bravery or fine qualities. To me a hero is so much more than a person who shows great bravery. When I think of a hero many fine qualities come to mind; intelligence, courage, altruism, compassion and great bravery.
In today’s contemporary world what is meant to be a hero is often mistaken by that portrayed in the media, through film and books. Far too often people think of heroes only as someone who risks there life to save another. But a hero is simply just someone who goes out of their way to do something for someone else and make a positive difference in their lives.
“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” (Christopher Reeves). In other words a hero can be anyone that is determined and helps other people. A hero is someone who can face challenges with determination, who can persevere or exceed beyond expectation, but is not always buff, or strong.
what is a hero? A hero doesn't always have to be have to be a special individual saving another hopeful soul from a burning building, or being born as an extraordinary individual who has the powers to save lives. A hero could be anyone whose daily acts go unnoticed, and could never be heard. People spend their days doing these things without any notice the act of heroism. Heros can be anywhere without anyone noticing these simple jobs that they do to help others. Heroes can be blind to the human eye but can be notice by the simple acts of strength and selflessness inside them. Although some hero acts go unheard of, heroes can be selfless people, who take up the courage to fight for things bigger than oneself.
I went years without knowing that the hero 's journey is involved in most of my life. We read it in books, see it in movies and can even apply it in our own lives! Some examples of this journey would be a high school graduation, getting a indian name, or even Ariel 's journey to human land in The Little Mermaid. In these big events otherwise known as the hero 's journey we experience a,"process of separation, initiation, and return...each stage must be completed successfully if the initiate is to become a hero"(Harris and Thompson 50). This process has been around for years and will be around for years to come but have you noticed it? Mattie Ross a young girl from Arkansas goes on a hero
Some definitions of heroes are people, who have noble qualities, and put the lives of others before their own life. They are expected to be reasonable and calm, during scary times, like when a shooting is going on, looking out for
What is Determination? Determination “is a quality that makes you continue to do or achieve something that is difficult”. When you have that goal and the mindset that I can, I will, and I must be the best that I can be makes you determined. Through all the obstacles that you may encounter will make your goal difficult to reach. As soon as you set in your mind, “that I am determined” to do what I have to do makes is what makes you a tough player. After setting your determination, next in line is being strong while you go through the process of achieving your
When I think of a hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
Heroism is defined as an act of courage and an act of selflessness. They reflect the highest levels of morality in society. Heroes have embodied the morality codes of civilizations throughout the ages. When heroes display courage, observers often identify with that courage. The refusal to take the easy way out and the ability to act in spite of fear, is what makes a person a hero. This is the way everyone wishes to react in the midst of a crisis. As witnessed in literature and real life, mankind needs heroes to provide an inspirational role model, an escape from the mundane, and a guide for morality.
What is a hero? Google defines a hero as someone who, “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” This obviously makes sense, right? A hero should be larger than life, right? Well, my is certainly all of those things, and on top of it a problem solver. You see there was a problem in Cleveland, no championships had been won for over 40 years. Then, in 2003, the year I was born, the solution entered the NBA draft. In the words of David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA, “With the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select LeBron James.” That was when the story of my hero started.
Do you have a hero? I have a hero but my definition of a hero might be different for what you are thinking because my definition of a hero is hard working, caring, and strong. I picked this person because he is an inspiration to me.
In today’s society we hear the word hero a lot. The media uses it almost on a daily basis. But what is a hero? What is heroism and who is heroic? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a heroism as “great bravery.”
