In my proposal plan I recommend that the average wait time at each food station in the café be decreased, especially during high rush hour time for example during the lunch and dinner rushes. We can help reduce the time by having servers make up pre portioned plates that way students can grab and go instead of wait in a line for upwards of thirty minutes for cold food. We can also have different food options added that serve different options because as of now the food lines operate on a schedule with the same food options every week. Another recommendation would to be expanded the cafeteria as a whole. As of now Howard University as roughly 10,000 undergraduate students, the cafeteria can barely hold 800 students comfortably. This will also cause the café to have better organization of lines in order to decrease confusion.
Howard students have been complaining about the café for some time now. Talking to upperclassmen whom had prior knowledge on the subject, they observed that the café is most inefficient between 11:30-1:00pm and 6:30pm-9:00pm. However, breakfast doesn’t experience this same type of rush as the lunch and dinner hours do. The long lines are due to the fact of not enough help by staff, for example the classics lined is only manned by two people, and the vegetarian line does not have a single server. The salad bar stationed is often kept empty and isn’t restocked until a student has to bring it to the attention of a café worker. The school’s lack of open venues limits students to constantly eat at the same places. Also, over the weekend, only one restaurant, Blackburn cafe, is open, although it closes early. This restricts students to eat at the same place, even when the main café barely changes their menu.

This is something that needs to be changed in the university and my proposal does exactly just that. The university needs another cafeteria to alleviate stress off of Blackburn cafeteria while making workers attend some sort of hospitality course, allowing for a friendly environment for students to eat in. However, the dining on campus is suggested to be healthy and nutritious, it is actually worse than fast food. Last, by convincing incoming students about the variety of restaurants and markets on campus, freshmen are told they have an assortment of dining and restaurants to eat at, but in reality are restricted to two main cafeterias and few chains on Georgia Avenue.
Yet, with personal experience in having worked in a cubicle setting and being a student, I often found myself looking forward to lunch as much to eat as to socialize with coworkers and friends. With this in mind, I am going to research what college students are eating and how they obtain the food. While many people face certain issues with campus dining, one of the few issues that really bother me is the dining hall hours. Ball State has the times listed on their website which most of the time they do not stay true to. Here I will list the times for you; breakfast is 6:45-10:29, lunch is 10:30-4:29, and dinner is 4:30-midnight. While I have gone in during those times to eat they dining halls are usually all packed up and starting to get ready for the next mealtime. I especially feel that they do not stay true to the dinnertime. All too often I will go into a dining hall around 8:30 and they main cuisines will already be packing up. This leaves people who are either working on homework or at work themselves hungry when they get the chance to finally eat. 82.35% of the people who took my survey said that they spent their time studying or working on homework. I asked if anyone has ever skipped dinner because they did not like the food options after everything has closed. 70.59% said yes to having skipped dinner. While this may be a problem I feel that one of three solutions could be the answer to fix it all. I believe that the dining hall could either leave one specific dining hall with all options open until twelve, have all of the dining halls open until twelve as said by Ball State, or better yet, change the dining times.
To solve this problem, we need the cafeteria to be open more hours. If it is because of the need of workers in those other times, it is a big change that even students won't mind to work in the cafeteria to have it open for longer hours. Another idea would be to have longer hours open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Even if it is not open for the whole day, longer hours might allow more comfort ability for everyone. We know that with out food, one cannot concentrate in their studies, nor perform their work well.

The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. On an everyday basis, State University tries to help students adjust to college life in one way or another. The dining service would be taking a large step towards assisting international students in this matter. Not only this, the dining service would join in the campaign to educate students in something new, each and everyday, by exposing all students to new international foods. Plus, at the same time, they would be saving all students a great deal of time and money, and not to mention, keeping them excited about eating in the dining services on a daily basis! The proposed way of incorporating international foods to dining service is both simple and efficient. The introduction of new and different international foods to residence hall dining services would benefit everyone who has the pleasure of dining at Iowa State University.
The students had a long list of complaints about the schools lunch offerings. They decided they would like to write letters to the director of food services, however they needed data to support their claims. The teacher suggested developing and conducting a survey that would provide them with accurate information. When they started breaking down the logistics of the study, the students quickly figured out that is, of course, much easier said than done. Their lunchroom not only offers the main dish, but has a variety of side items, soups, salads, and more, that give the students a variety of options for lunch. With so many available options, they had to put an extreme amount of care into the development of their study to ensure results could be accurately measured.
Lunch is ordinarily the favorite part of a person’s day, especially during school. Lunch is mainly spent with friends socializing with one another while eating. Several of lunch table conversations include discussions about the food one is eating and how delicious or horrible the lunch is. The school lunches in Terre Haute high schools and at Indiana State University are either very unhealthy or undesirable for students to eat. While in high school in Terre Haute eating at school is a choice, but we all know it is unhealthy if one goes all day without eating. I recommend that we decrease the average service times for all food stations as well as reduce the minimum service time for the interactive cooking station and increase the inter-arrival time. We can implement this by offering specials a half hour to an hour before the rush period begins, have enough precooked meals available to accommodate the rush and precook the ingredients for the interactive station. We can also have the manager step in as the second cashier whenever a certain amount of time transpires. The cashier on duty can signal to the manager by hand gestures or a light when the wait time has exceeded two minutes, respectively. I also recommend that the layout of the cafeteria be changed. The new layout will give us better organization of the lines in order to decrease confusion.

Based on the numbers of lunch participation, there is a opportunity to reach more students, especially those who might benefit from a low-cost breakfast meal. People eat food every day without thinking twice about it, because it is a necessity for us to live. How often do you think about what is in the foods that you eat? How many calories does it have? Are there any vitamins and minerals in it? Is it high in fat? For most of us and especially college students who live a busy life on the go, the answer to that question is probably no. Since becoming a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts, I have been more interested in food and what people are eating. Also since more young Americans are becoming obese I want to find out what they are eating and where. Going to college and seeing how students have poor eating habits I want to find out why they are eating this way. Is it because they are away from home for the first time? Or is it because that is the only food that is available for them? I also want to find out if students would eat healthier if it was provided for them? My hypothesis is that students eat unhealthy because it is more convenient for them. There is usually no time to cook a homemade meal and most college students are always in a hurry so it is easier to pick up takeout. Also most college students don’t know how to cook. I also believe that most college students don’t care if the food is unhealthy for them, as long as it tastes good. Hopefully, in the following pages I will uncover the wide world of college eating.
